A Waste of Glitter or Effective Activism?

Got glitter, will travel.  The latest act of protest here in the United States is glitter bombing.  What is that you may ask?

Glitter bombing is when activists throw glitter on people at public events.  It’s been mostly directed at Republican candidates that oppose marriage equality.

While prosecution is unlikely without proof of intent to injure, Mark R. Vernazza, a legal associate at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP in Boston, Massachusetts, says it’s “technically assault and battery”.

Womanizer Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista were glitter bombed at a Minneapolis book signing and Republican presidential candidate losers Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann got the same treatment — Pawlenty at a book signing in San Francisco and it happened to Bachmann in Minneapolis.  No way!

There’s so much disgust with hater Rick Santorum that he’s been glitter bombed twice in just the past few days.  It happened at his South Carolina headquarters this past weekend, and, again, Monday in Lady Lake, Florida.

Others that have been glitter bombed were Marcus Bachmann, husband of Michele, at his medical practice, the anti-marriage equality group “Minnesota for Marriage” at the Minnesota State Fair, political consultant Karl Rove, and Minnesota Congressman Erik Paulson.

There’s definitely a lot of protest against those Minnesota politicians because they definitely come across as very homophobic.

It isn’t always directed at Republican candidates.  Anti-abortion activist and Democratic party presidential candidate Randall Terry was glitter bombed by fellow candidate Vermin Supreme at a forum this past December.

And, social commentator and sex advice columnist Dan Savage was glitter bombed in Eugene, Oregon, Irvine, California, and in Vancouver, British Columbia because of his transphobic (negative attitudes and feelings toward transgendered men and women) comments.

What do I think of it?  Well, it’s radical and definitely gets attention.  However, if you’re going to waste good glitter, at least hit your target!!

Now, if I thought talking to these haters would be effective, then I would go that route.  But, we know you make a passionate plea to Santorum and Bachmann, the reply you get is something like, “you have equal rights in America if its a marriage between a man and a woman”.  But, I asked you a question about the economy!

With that being said, you can get a package of 8 glitter flip-top shakers at Walgreen’s for only $3.99.

I fully support what should be a given without all this turmoil THE RIGHT TO BE WHO YOU ARE in the land of the free, when you read the constitution it should go without saying. The US is NOT a country with any religious ties to politics but the fact is that people with money in the bible belt have clout and they are dangerous!
Be agraid very afraid if Newt etc get elected
I support glitter but not being arrested for it, we need people with clout to help stand up to the cause
