Warm Temperatures & I’m Ready To Take A Hike

Forget March and April, it’s going to feel like May all this week and much of next week and even on the coolest days next week, it’ll still be at late-April levels for temperatures.

Temperatures in the 70s to near 80° over the next nine days will be near or at record levels!  March temperatures are already running about 6.1° above average and that’s before the mid-March heat wave kicks in.

Here are my forecast highs in the Quad Cities for the next seven days and the (record highs for those dates at the Quad City International Airport):

3/13  TUE   74° (Record:  77°)               3/14  WED   80° (Record:  77°)

3/15  THU   78° (Record:  77°)               3/16   FRI   77° (Record:  82°)

3/17  SAT   79° (Record:  78°)               3/18   SUN   75° (Record:  76°)

3/19  MON  76° (Record:  78°)

Since March will go down in the climate books with above normal temperatures, that will mark the sixth consecutive month with above normal temperatures in the Quad Cities.

But, just to be a spoil sport, or as I call it, a realist, from this point in the winter/spring over the past five years, we did see snow again!

Last year, we had flurries on March 23rd after hitting 74° three days earlier and we had two days with snow flurries in April 2011.  However, from this point forward in 2010, we picked up 2.9″ of snow; 4.3″ in 2009; 2.8″ in 2008, and 0.4″ in 2007.  That snow in 2008 came one two different days, April 11th and April 12th with 0.2″ accumulating on each of those days.

Enough about that non-sense, I’m ready to enjoy the spring weather.  For a short getaway, Ray and I are going to spend the weekend at a little cabin sitting on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in Dubuque, Iowa.

We’ve been there twice before in December 2009 and, again, in October 2010.  Thus, we’ve seen the River ice-covered and the woods blanketed in snow and we’ve seen the woods ablaze with color from the changing leaves.  This will be our first “spring” visit.

Sadly, this will be another one of those “firsts” without Miss ABBA.  She loved hiking through the woods and carrying back large sticks and just sitting on the patio just watching the River and hoping to see something other than a squirrel in the woods.  We saw deer in the early morning hours, but with Miss ABBA and Gretel, we never were able to sneak up on them during the day.

Although it will just be a grown-up getaway, we’re taking Gretel back this summer, so then we will have visited in all four seasons.

Another nice thing is that along with the warm temperatures in the 70s, there will be a daily chance of a spring shower.  While I may not have Paris in the rain, it’ll be very relaxing (and romantic) to take a hike in the woods in the rain and then come back and just stare at the Mississippi River.

I hope you all have a great weekend, too, and enjoy the warm weather.  How bad it is that I’m already thinking of the weekend and it’s only Tuesday (well, it’s my Thursday).  I still have to wait three more days.
