Jack Frost Could Visit Soon!

Friends, back on March 29th, I blogged about colder air heading back to the Mississippi and Illinois Valleys.  Well, after the warmest March on record in the Quad Cities and the first three days of April with highs in the 70s (16.8° above average), that chilly air has arrived.  Interesting enough, I actually had a colleague criticize me (go figure!) for talking about the chilly weather because he called it “a low potential at this point”, meaning last week when I blogged about it.

Highs today will only make it in the low-to-mid-60s.  On any typical early April day, we wouldn’t complain since the average high this time of the year is 58°.  However, we’ve been really spoiled this winter and spring with above average warmth.

Tonight’s lows will drop into the upper-30s, but luckily there will be enough wind to keep the frost away.  After a chilly start, highs Thursday will only be about average, around 58°.

My concern comes Thursday night and Friday morning when we see lows drop into the mid-30s in the metro area.  But, hometowns north of the Quad Cities will see lows in the low-30s.

This is definitely cold enough for frost to develop.  I hope no one jumped the gun and put out any tender vegetation like tomato or pepper plants!  I resisted the urge and I’m happy I did.

Temperatures rebound Friday into the weekend with highs in the 60s with some showers possible Saturday.

As for early next week, another surge of colder air arrives from Monday through Wednesday with highs only in the 50s and lows dropping to near freezing by Monday night and Tuesday night.  At that point, I think there could be a frost area wide and even a freeze across the far north.

This far out, there’s still some wiggle room with the forecast.  Let’s hope that a heavy frost or a freeze doesn’t develop and wipe away all of the blooms on the fruit trees that are well advanced with this spring’s warmth.

There’s a reason many people say don’t plant until Mother’s Day!

Peeps we knew the cold would be back!
Bruce is bringing in the plants tonight just to be safe.

Your colleague is a dork for criticizing you !
