MCA of the Beastie Boys — Dead at 47

Adam Yauch, better known as “MCA” of the rap trio The Beastie Boys, died today after a lengthy illness at the age of 47.

Yauch passed away in his native New York City this morning after a three-year battle with cancer.

Billboard.com report that “Yauch underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland in July 2009. Treatment included radiation therapy, and in December of that year, he sent an email message to fans to share that we was feeling “healthy, strong and hopeful” he’d beaten the disease. The exact cause and place of death wasn’t immediately known.”

The Beastie Boys’ debut album, “Licensed to Ill” from 1986, went on to sell more 9 million copies in the U.S. and the first of four of their albums to top the Billboard charts.

The trio’s biggest hit was the #7 smash, “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)” in 1987.

They scored two other top 40 hits on the “Hot 100”, 1989’s “Hey Ladies” (#36) and the #28 smash, “Intergalactic” in 1998.
