Let’s quickly recap: a right-wing political group is preparing a lawsuit because its leader was branded a racist in her concert video montage of “Nobody Knows Me”, boobs were intentionally flashed in Istanbul, Turkey and, again, this past weekend in Paris, France, we saw a thong-butt shot in Rome, Italy, and there’s a lawsuit filed over the horns and strings section in the 1990 #1 hit Vogue, which was allegedly lifted from a 1977 song called “Love Break”. (Seriously, they waited 22 years to file a lawsuit?)
What scandals! Oh wait, it’s just the summer of Madonna.
As the “MDNA Tour” treks through England over the next few days on its way to the United States in late-August, the first fourteen shows on the tour have sold out and raked in a whopping $49.5 million.
There are 13 shows left in the European tour and I’m sure the two shows in Russia (August 7 & 9) will be filled with controversy over Saint Petersburg’s anti-gay law that criminalized reading, writing or speaking about gay, lesbian, or transgender people. Many activists have already been arrested.
Madonna, in March, said, “I will come to St. Petersburg to speak up for the gay community, to support the gay community and to give strength and inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed. I don’t run away from adversity. I will speak during my show about this ridiculous atrocity.”
Government officials there are already threatening to fine Madonna if she makes positive comments about gays, strips down, or does anything provocative! Seriously? We’re talking about Madonna and you’ve just given her a “Truth or Dare” and she will choose both. Saint Petersburg, you just lost that bet. She’ll pay the fine and laugh all the way to her next show in Helsinki, Finland, three days later!
Controversy aside, today is a great day for Madonna fans. The third video from her #1 international hit album, “MDNA”, “Turn Up the Radio” was released.
Remember, back in the day of the video-playing MTV when they’d make a big deal and tease hot new videos days in advance and then play the “World Premiere Video”? I miss my MTV and not the MTV on the air now!
While it’s still to-be-determined if American radio will play it (not likely), it’s almost guaranteed to become Madonna’s 43rd record-extending chart-topper on Billboard’s Dance Club music chart.
It should also come as no surprise that YouTube has labeled the video with the word “Explicit”. There are prostitutes, a man that may be smoking some kind of illegal substance in a bong, and there are various side shots of boobies. Shockingly, other than her push-up bra showing off her assets, it’s not Madonna’s boobs that make a wardrobe malfunction.
So, in my best Alan Hunter or Nina Blackwood imitation, here is the World Premiere of Madonna’s new video, “Turn Up The Radio”.
And, in the words of Madonna herself, “I’m so sick and tired of playing this game– we gotta have fun if it’s all that we do — gotta shake up the system and break all the rules –gotta turn up the radio until the speakers blow!”
