Smelling Like An “Expensive Hooker”

I’m sure women-focused magazines have many more, but I like when you open magazines like “Out”, “Instinct”, or “The Advocate” and you find cologne advertisements where you can pull back the tab and smell the cologne.  But, as a sales pitch, it hasn’t worked on me yet.  I still wear the same cologne today that I’ve been wearing for fifteen years.  Gucci Envy debuted in 1997 and it’s still my favorite.

But, yesterday, I got the new October 2012 “Out” magazine and there’s an ad for Tom Ford’s “Noir” and it smells fantastic.  Gucci Envy, you may have some competition now that my bottle is getting low.  However, when I saw the $125 price tag, it made me realize that “Envy” is still my favorite at $45.

Advertisements in magazines, on billboards, and on television are some of the leading ways to promote a new perfume or cologne.  Last year, Forbes magazine reported that Beyonce’s “Heat” was the top seller.

Earlier this year, in April, Madonna released her new scent, “Truth or Dare”.

In addition to this print ad, there was also this 30-second video to entice you to buy it.

Since  perfumes and colognes are, at least, a $15 billion (that’s BILLION) industry, the stakes are higher to get your attention and music stars lead the way.  Last year, pop star Rihanna released her first perfume, Reb’l Fleur and her new one, Rebelle, hit stores this past spring.

But, if you want a spectacle when for the release of your debut scent, leave it to international pop star Lady Gaga to top them all in getting attention.

It was announced about two years ago that Mother Monster would be marketing her first perfume.  First there were rumors of the name.  It wasn’t going to be called “Monster”.  Then, there were rumors that it would smell like blood and semen, but Lady Gaga said that was not true, but it was based the molecular structure of those two substances.

She added that the perfume was based on her blood molecules for “a sense of having me on your skin” and instead of smelling like blood and semen, the perfume would smell like an “expensive hooker”.

“Lady Gaga Fame” came out almost a month ago and two of the print ads are phenomenal.

However, we all know that Lady Gaga doesn’t do things the traditional way.  In addition to those classic ads, she also released the most amazing five-minute mini-movie experience to launch the new perfume. You have to check this out!  Pure Gaga art!

Warning:  Not pornography, but NSFW!

Based on her determination and her creative sales pitch, I might even buy it and when I see her in concert in Las Vegas, January 25, 2013, I’ll not only dress like one, but I can smell like an “expensive hooker”, too.  That sounds better than someone saying, “what are you wearing?  You smell like blood and semen.”

  1. That Gaga movie was a trip. It seems like every one hit wonder now has their own fragrance. Though Lady Gaga is a mega star, it makes me wonder if she came up with her own scent, or did the perfume makers chase her down so that they can slap the Gaga name on a bottle of stink pretty for exposure? I do not know what an expensive hooker smells like, nor a cheap one for that matter, but if I had to guess, it would be like two day old man sweat, cigarettes, and dirty money left on the night stand. As for me, I tend to steer away from celebrity colognes. Just because they can sing, play ball, or act doesn’t make them a scent aficionado.
