The C-word Is So Heartbreaking

The c-word is vile and disgusting.  And, sadly, it takes our loved ones everyday, whether they have two legs or four.

In 1978, I lost one of my best friends, my grandfather, John Henry Peoples, to cancer when I was only 13-years-old.

And, just over a year ago, I lost my other best friend of almost 12 years, Miss ABBA, to cancer.  This picture was taken just weeks before she crossed over the “rainbow bridge”.  Miss ABBA fought the odds and led a courageous battle to live ten happy months after she was given only two to three months to live when she was diagnosed with cancer.

ABBA -- January 11, 2012

Sadly, cancer is the leading cause of death in golden retrievers.  If you’re a golden owner (or a dog of any breed), here are some of the possible signs of cancer you need to look for in your furry friend.

Golden Cancer

Although it may be too late for Miss ABBA, some exciting research is being done to find out why goldens are so prone to developing cancer.  One of the largest studies of its kind is being conducted in Colorado.

I found that story and the graphic of the possible tell-tale signs on a beautiful website called “The Daily Golden”.  Check it out!

One year ago, on February 6, 2012, just three days after losing Miss ABBA, I wrote a blog called “There Is A Heaven & I’ll Be Going There One Day”.  I want to share it with you again in case you missed it the first time.

Thank you for checking out today’s blog.
