Random Friday Thoughts — October 26, 2018

I’m back after a couple of weeks off for my trip to Morocco, so thank you for checking out my random thoughts.

I’m sure there are many Halloween parties this weekend, so have fun and be safe.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HILLARY CLINTON

I hope you have an incredible day and year ahead.  Meeting you in 2016 is still one of the highlights in my life!

Hillary AP

“HALLOWEEN”

Since I arrived back from my Africa trip on opening day and worked the next seven days, I’ve avoided the spoilers to the new “Halloween” movie.

But, I’m going to see it this weekend!

Halloween.jpg

The movie scared up an incredible $76.2 last weekend!

After just the opening weekend, it’s now the highest grossing movie * in the 11-movie franchise that started 40 years ago.

*  If you adjust the box office of all the movies to account for ticket price inflation, 1978’s $47 million box office for the original “Halloween” would be $183.6 million today, making it the biggest!

“WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?”

As a kid, I never got to watch “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”.  But, on the return flight, I watched the documentary, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”.

I absolutely fell in love with Fred Rogers and I’m glad I had the whole row of seats to myself because of the tears streaming down my face!

It brought in $22.6 million in domestic box office receipts making it the biggest documentary of 2018!

MORE “OZARK” TO COME

A couple of weeks ago (10/10), Netflix renewed the Emmy Award nominated “Ozark” for a third season.

ozark.jpg

I absolutely love this show and I’m predicting that Laura Linney and Julia Garner will (or should) get Emmy nominations next year when they come out.

Jason Bateman was nominated this year.

If you haven’t seen the first two seasons, you now have time to do so now.  It’s an incredible drama!

“KENNEDY”

I’m reading an 800-plus page biography of President John F. Kennedy by Ted Sorensen, his adviser and speechwriter.

Kennedy Sorensen

The book was first released in 1965 and is pretty much the autobiography that Kennedy never got to write.

I’m 400 pages into the book now and one of the most interesting non-political things I’ve learned about the nation’s 35th president is that he bathed three times a day!

His Attorney General, his brother Robert, didn’t like being called “Bobby”, even though that’s what JFK called him.  Robert Kennedy preferred “Bob”.

JFK ate many times a day — small portions at a time — and really liked soups!

And, I’m astounded that him being Catholic was a major issue for him in the 1960 election.  He broke that glass ceiling, just as Obama did in 2008 with race.

Now, if only the 2016 election hadn’t been stolen from Hillary Clinton, another glass ceiling would have been shattered!

Thanks Vladimir Putin and Russia!

“SEIZE THE MOMENT”

After reading Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward’s “All The President’s Men” and “The Final Days”, I realized I had one more Nixon book on my bookshelf, 1992’s “Seize The Moment: America’s Challenge in a One-Superpower World”.

Nixon.jpg

Reading most of it and skimming over some of the very outdated parts, here are a few takeaways.

Clearly, unlike Ronald Reagan who was in bed (metaphorically) with Mikhail Gorbachev, Nixon has nothing good to say about that Soviet leader.  He was on Team Boris Yeltsin.

While China, in 1979, implemented the “one-child policy” as a way to control population growth, Nixon talked about the aging population in Japan.  Because more than one-quarter of the population was expected to be over 65 in the year 2025, the government was giving women $6,700 grants to have a third child!

But, interestingly, while he praised Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush in the book, he never mentioned his vice president and successor Gerald Ford once!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty strange since Ford basically damned his 1976 re-election hopes by pardoning Nixon a month after he resigned the presidency in 1974!

NIXON BY NIXON:  IN HIS OWN WORDS

I was also talking about Nixon back in September and I wrote, “While I didn’t know him personally, I’ve concluded that he wasn’t a good man!  I’m not talking politically because he was a snake in the grass.”

I just came across the 2014 HBO documentary, “Nixon By Nixon: In His Own Words” and it’s incredible.   And, it verifies my September statement.  He was a vile man!

Just as the name implies, it’s not transcripts of all of Nixon’s private recordings, it’s the actual audio, which makes it even more damning.

Check out these two comments!

Nixon Law.JPG

Nixon 2.JPG

Nixon also said, “The press is the enemy!”

Fast forward more than four decades and it sounds like “that man” in the White House (45) now!

Nixon trashed talked everyone — women, hippies, Jews, and, of course, gays (back then it was “homosexuals”, “homo”, and “fags”)!

Nixon 1.JPG

There’s another longer Nixon rant that really blew me away.  I’m sharing it at the bottom of the blog, so you can see more random thoughts first.

If you want to see it, you can find it in its entirety on YouTube.

MARIAH CAREY

We’re just weeks away from the release of Mariah Carey’s fifteenth studio album, “Caution”, on November 16, 2018.

I’ve already bought it!  So far, three songs are available to hear.

MC Caution.JPG

“With You” is the first single from the album and it’s already racing up the Adult Contemporary and the Urban Adult Contemporary chart.

Of course, Top 40 radio isn’t playing it!

And, I absolutely love the first song from “Caution”, “GTFO”.

Yes, it does stand for what you think it does and Mimi makes it sound so sexy telling someone that their company is no longer needed!

THEY SAID WHAT???

Former President Richard Nixon to White House Chief of Staff Bob Haldeman:

“Homosexuality, dope, immorality in general, these are the enemies of strong societies.  Goddammit, we have got to stand up to these people.  I do not mind the homosexuality.  I understand it.  Nevertheless, the point that I want to make is that goddammit, I do not think you glorify homosexuality anymore than you glorify whores.  Now we all have weaknesses and so forth and so on.  But, goddammit, what do you think that does to kids?”

Nixon rants on, “You knew what happened to the Greeks?  Homosexuality destroyed them.  Sure, Aristotle was a homo;  we all know that, so was Socrates.  You what happened to the Romans? Romans?  The last six Roman emperors were fags.  You know what happened to the Popes?  Po-Po-popes were laying the nuns.  That’s been going on for years, centuries.  But when the Popes – When the Catholic Church went to the hell, it was homosexual. And finally had to be cleaned out.”

Nixon 2.jpg

More Nixon (in a 1983 interview):  “We talk about the men reporters, the women reporters are more bitchy than the men.”

“THE MAN THAT INVENTED CHRISTMAS”

Since Christmas is now less than two months away, here’s my customary mention of my favorite holiday. 🙂

On my flight to Paris, I finally got to see this late 2017 film and I’d highly recommend it.

It was overlooked at the box office making only $8.1 million.

It tells the story of Charles Dickens and how he came up with the holiday staple, “The Christmas Story”!

GRADE:  B

MORE DAN STEVENS

I only have one complaint about Dan Stevens.  I know it’s acting, but in two of the three movies I’ve seen him in, his beauty is hidden!

I mean, in “Beauty and the Beast”, he was totally hidden as the Beast and don’t get me started on the Dickens hair in the Christmas movie! 🙂

So, from 2014’s “The Guest”, here goes!

Dan s.jpg

GRADE:  B

“I FEEL PRETTY”

This Amy Schumer comedy earned $88.4 million at the box office on a $32 million budget.

While the movie addresses body image, I wasn’t impressed.

Save yourself an hour-and-a-half of your life and watch the three minute trailer!

I guess I’m not alone with those thoughts.  It has a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Random Friday Thoughts — October 5, 2018

Happy first week of October!

Thank you for taking the time to check out my Random Friday Thoughts!

MORE REFLECTIONS ON PRESIDENT CARTER

President Jimmy Carter turned 94 earlier this week.

Here’s a note I left at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library & Museum in Atlanta, Georgia, a couple of years ago on my visit.

AMERICA’S MOOD

It’s summed up perfectly by Dana Scully and the always incredible, beautiful, and intelligent Gillian Anderson!

COMFORTING ROBERT KENNEDY

Just moments after giving his victory speech in the California Democratic primary at the Ambassador Hotel in June 1968, Senator Robert F. Kennedy was making his exit through the kitchen.

That’s when an assassin’s bullets mortally wounded the Democratic presidential hopeful.

18-year-old hotel busboy, Juan Romero rushed to Kennedy’s side and cradled him and kept his head off the restaurant floor.

Kennedy.JPG

Romero died earlier this week of an apparent heart attack in Modesto, California. He was 68.

Earlier this year, Romero said, “I kneeled down to him and I could see his lips moving, so I put my ear next to his lips and I heard him say, ‘Is everybody OK?’ I said, ‘Yes, everybody’s OK.’ I put my hand between the cold concrete and his head just to make him comfortable.”

“THE WALKING DEAD”

Like 45 and his old tweets that come back to bite him in the ass, I’m retracting something I said in my April 20, 2018, blog.

Under the ominous headline, GOOD RIDDANCE “THE WALKING DEAD”, I wrote, “After eight seasons, I’m giving up on AMC’s “The Walking Dead”.  The seventh and eighth season were painful and I didn’t find them enjoyable… Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), I’ll miss you, but I can’t take the show anymore!”

Well, hell’s bells!  Now that I know Lincoln is leaving the show early in the ninth season, I now have to watch it to say goodbye to my future ex-boyfriend.

Andrew Lincoln

By the way, I saw the first five minutes of the October 7th premiere episode and it looks great.

Okay, show runners, while the details of how he departs is unknown to the public, I hope his death (?) is heartbreaking!  And, as an added bonus, can Judith go along with him?

I’m normally not a shipper, but may I request Jesusaron?

“YOU”

Last week, I talked about the Lifetime stalker drama, “You”.

I’m still loving it and I was laughing out loud with these two lines from the last episode.

you-lifetime

Beck’s thoughts after the quick intimacy with Joe: “What was that? Eight seconds? Hell yeah, he’s got that Trump just took Pennsylvania look!”

Also, from Beck, “You’re a coward. Britney got through 2007 though, right?”

BASEBALL SEASON

I’m a fair weather baseball fan.

Kris Bryant.JPG

By the way, that Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs. 🙂

I don’t really follow a particular team although when I lived in Chicago, I rooted for the Cubs. And, then when the White Sox made the World Series, they were my team.

There are just too many games for me, but I start to pay attention when the 30 teams are whittled down and the Division Series, the League Championship Series, and the World Series take place.

The Division Series (quarterfinal round) got underway this week!

In the August 6-13, 2018 issue, “Time” reported that the average age of those watching Major League Baseball (MLB) rose from 52 in 2000 to 57 in 2016. (42 is the average age of National Basketball Association viewers!)

Not only are MLB viewers getting old, there are fewer young people watching the games.  A recent survey showed that nearly two-thirds of people ages 18 to 36 didn’t watch baseball!

By the way, I was huge Cleveland Indians fan when I lived in Ohio and Grady Sizemore played for the team (2004-2011).

Sizemore

And, as a kid, I had the biggest crush on Kansas City Royals third baseman, George Brett!

Brett

“MANIFEST”

The new hit, “Manifest” on NBC is creepy, sad, and awesome!

In 2013, a flight takes off from Jamaica and arrives in New York five years later.  However, to the people on board, it was a typical three-hour flight with some turbulence.

But, the world has moved on without them.

I was blown away by the premiere and the second episode was equally compelling!  I love the premise, the acting, and I’m touched with the sentimentality!

While I can’t wait to see how the story develops, I’m majorly crushing on Josh Dallas!

josh-dallas-manifest

I may have to binge watch “Once Upon a Time” when I’m snowed in this winter to catch more of him!

Totally random here, but one advantage to a “Manifest”-like situation is not having to deal with 45 in the White House!

FALL TELEVISION MVP

I’m happy to see more of my network television shows back from summer break.

“9-1-1” on Fox is still sexy, thrilling , and fun.  The earthquake episodes were fantastic.

And, here’s to the new hotties:

Ryan Guzman (Eddie Diaz, a new firefighter on “9-1-1”)

Ryan Guzman.jpg

and from the USA Network show, “The Purge”, Gabriel Chavarria (Miguel Guerrero, a US Marine who returns home on Purge Night to save his sister, Penelope).

HARVEST SEASON IS HERE

Before you know it, a hard freeze and snow will be on the way.  Harvest those crops!

“A LEGENDARY CHRISTMAS”

Finally, more information about the upcoming John Legend Christmas project.

john legend - A Legendary Christmas

The new album (and 25-date Christmas tour) is called “A Legendary Christmas” and it comes out October 26th!

Fourteen songs will appear on the album and it includes several original songs and many classics like “Please Come Home for Christmas”, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, and “The Christmas Song” (featuring Esperanza Spalding).

Stevie Wonder brings his harmonica skills to the album’s first song, “What Christmas Means to Me”.

“SONS OF ANARCHY”

I just started binge-watching the seven season, 92-episode FX series, “Sons of Anarchy”, which ran from 2008-2014.

After the first two seasons, I’m very impressed.  I even Googled to see if “motorcycle club” life was as violent as the series portrays it and from what I read, it’s pretty rough to be part of that gang!

Charlie Hunnam has grown up from when I first saw him in the 1999-2000 original UK series “Queer As Folk”.  He’s still gorgeous and nicely buffed as rough Jax Teller.

Charlie Katey.JPG

And, I’m blown away by Katey Sagal, who play’s Jax’s mother, Gemma, and is the real life wife of “Sons of Anarchy” creator Kurt Sutter.   Many will remember her as Peg Bundy on Fox’s long-running series “Married… with Children”.

Sagal won the Golden Globe Award for “Best Actress” in a Television Series Drama for the third season.

In the second season, there’s a brutal rape and beating of a major character and it’s painful to watch.  It’s even more heartbreaking watching her try to recover without her family knowing about it!

Here’s an interesting tidbit that you may remember if you’ve watch the series.

Half_Sack.png

Other than Hunnam, I’m crushing on Johnny Lewis, who plays “Half-Sack” (no, I won’t explain his nickname!) in seasons one and two.

When I went online to find out more about the actor, I learned that he dated Katy Perry many years ago.

Johnny Lewis Katy Perry.JPG

However, I was shocked to learn that he’s dead.

Lewis and his 81-year-old landlady Catherine Davis were found dead at Davis’ home in September 2012.

Police were called after neighbors heard the woman screaming.  Authorities say Lewis broke into the house, beat Davis to death and killed her cat, Jesse.

They found his body in the driveway and believe he fell to his death from the building.

Lewis had just been released from jail just five days before the murder, but the autopsy found no alcohol or drugs in his body.

His family says he had occasional spurts of violence, which stemmed from untreated head injuries suffered from a high-speed motorcycle accident one year earlier!

“JAKE SHEARS”

It’s hard to believe that the last Scissor Sisters album came out in 2012.

I was so grateful to see them in Chicago in 2010.

This was the pre-concert and post-concert after dancing and getting caught in the rain!

AP SS Final

This is sexy Jake Shears, one of the two lead singers for the band (with Ana Matronic).

Scissor Sisters

In August, Jake released his self-titled debut album and it’s phenomenal.  Sadly, it hasn’t made a splash in America like it did in Europe!

Jake.jpg

There are many incredible songs on the album and my favorites are “Good Friends”, “S.O.B.” (which stands for sex on the brain), “Everything I’ll Ever Need”, “Creep City”, and “Sad Song Backwards”!

GRADE:  B+

“DANCING QUEEN”

If you love Cher and you love ABBA, then this album is a combination of unicorns, rainbows, and bell bottoms if you’re a dancing queen!

It’s expected to debut in the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 album chart!

And, the album’s first single, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” moves into the Top Ten on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, her 14th top 10 hit on that chart!

Random Friday Thoughts — September 14, 2018

This week’s random thoughts will be a short one because my sister Tammy and her boyfriend are here in Duluth, Minnesota, visiting me.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my thoughts!

PIZZA BUFFET

On Thursday, we checked out Sammy’s Pizza buffet.  I’ve been looking forward to checking it out since moving here and it was decent!

I loved the pizza crust and the chicken wings, but it’s no Wise Guys Pizza in Davenport, Iowa, where Tammy works.

I love Wise Guys more because it alternates three dessert pizzas (cherry, apple, and cinnamon sugar crumb) and their boneless chicken wings are amazing!

SOPHIA LOREN

To Italian food and wine (and Sophia Loren)!

“FEAR” IS A WONDERFUL THING!

I haven’t read Bob Woodward’s new book, “Fear”, but knowing that “that man” will be raked over the coals, fear is a wonderful thing!

“OZARK” — SEASON 2

I absolutely loved season one of the Netflix series, “Ozark” and season two doesn’t disappoint!

To catch you up if you haven’t started watching this incredible series, Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) and his business partner have been laundering drug money in Chicago.

His partner decides to swindle the drug cartel and it doesn’t end well for him.  As Marty is about to be killed, he remembers a brochure about the Ozarks and tells them that it’d be easy for him to launder about one-half billion dollars there.

So, that takes Marty, his wife Wendy (the always fantastic Laura Linney) and their two children to Ozarks of Missouri.

Bateman was nominated for an Emmy for season one and both Bateman and Linney were nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Season two is the “Wendy” season.  Next year when Emmy nominations are announced, I want Linney to get a nod for Best Actress.

Also, Julia Garner deserves a Supporting Actress nomination for her strong, yet heartbreaking performance of trashy Ruth Langmore.

“Ozark” has yet to be renewed for season 3, but it’ll come.  And, when it does, I hope Janet McTeer, who plays Helen Pierce, the Chicago-based attorney who represents the cartel, is back!

GRADE:  A-

“TALES OF THE CITY”

More on Laura Linney, who I absolutely love.  She’ll be reprising her role of Mary Ann Singleton in “Tales of the City”, which is coming to Netflix in 2019.

If you’re not familiar with Armistead Maupin’s series, it’s incredible.

The first installment debuted in the U.S. on PBS in 1994.

Tales Miniseries

Since then, there’s been “More Tales of the City” and “Further Tales of the City”.

And, Linney’s Singleton is my favorite.

It shows that a small town kid can learn a lot about life in the “big city”.  For her, it was San Francisco. For me, it was Chicago!

Mary Ann

In a March 2014 blog, I thanked Maupin for the amazing book and television series and for motivating me in my career and life!

If you missed it, just click here and it’ll open in a new window.

ONLY A MONTH AWAY NOW

The new “Halloween” movie hits theaters Friday, October 19th, and it’s getting rave reviews from the Toronto International Film Festival.

Here’s the latest trailer and it’s phenomenal!

It’s much more indicative that the showdown between Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers will be final!

Here was the first trailer — it’s more of a set-up of the new movie.

CHER & ABBA COLLIDE!

If you saw this summer’s “Mamma Mia:  Here We Go Again”, you know that Cher made a cameo appearance.

It was also announced that she was so enthralled with the music of ABBA that she decided to do an ABBA cover album.

It comes out September 28th and I’ve already ordered it.  Cher is also going out on tour to promote the album!

Cher

Since we’re on the subject of ABBA covers, one of my favorite bands of all-time, Erasure (Andy Bell and Vince Clarke), released a four-song EP, “ABBA-esque”, in 1992.

erasure abba esque.jpg

My only regret is that it was just an EP.  Andy and Vince, how about a re-issue with several more songs to make it a full length? 🙂

RICHARD NIXON

I don’t know what you think of President Richard Nixon. While I didn’t know him personally, I’ve concluded that he wasn’t a good man!  I’m not talking politically because he was a snake in the grass.

I just finished reading Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward’s “All The President’s Men” (about breaking the Watergate story while reporting for “The Washington Post”) and the sequel, “The Final Days”, my 22nd and 23rd books I’ve read this year.

Woodward Bernstein.JPG

But, interestingly enough, I read “The Final Days” first since I didn’t realize I had “All The President’s Men”! 🙂

This is like reading “The Deathly Hallows” (2007) in J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series before reading 1997’s “The Philosopher’s Stone” and the other five books!

It was very interesting that this wasn’t just a little break-in at the Democratic National Committee Headquarters at the Watergate complex in June 1972, it was a much bigger debacle of dirty politics and insecurity.

Those underhanded tricks started back in 1969 after Nixon moved into the White House.

And, what’s very crazy about the whole thing is that Nixon was almost guaranteed re-election in 1972 and to think he was all brought down by lies and a cover-up!

debate

It’s not like he was expected to lose an election to a credible woman that should have easily been elected — before collusion (allegedly) and election tampering and interference from an enemy of the United States (Hello, Vladimir Putin)!

Trump Putin

“FROST/NIXON”

Before reading the two Woodward and Bernstein books, I watched the 2008 drama, “Frost vs. Nixon”, which was directed by Ron Howard.

It starred Frank Langella as President Nixon and Michael Sheen as television talk show host David Frost.

It earned five Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Langella.

Random Friday Thoughts — May 4, 2018

Happy Friday!

I hope you have a great weekend!  It’s Kentucky Derby weekend and there’s also Cinco de Mayo!  I’ll be making guacamole!

Thank you for checking out my Random Friday Thoughts!

E-COLI & ROMAINE LETTUCE

At least 121 people have become ill across 25 states with E-coli bacteria linked to romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona.

There is now one death in California linked to the tainted lettuce.

Traces Of Toxic Chemical Found In California Lettuce

And, just today, Friday, May 4th, there’s a ground beef recall from possible plastic in the product that was sold at Kroger stores!

It seems like we’re always hearing about tainted produce, meat, and other edibles that you “should throw away” or “return to the store for a refund” from various bacteria and viruses (listeria, salmonella, E coli), seafood and nut contaminants, or physical hazards (glass, metal, etc.).

While the U.S. has strict food processing guidelines, I think it should be much tougher.

If food-producing companies faced even higher penalties, I think shortcuts would be a thing of the past and consumer safety would be the top priority — not profit.

There’s too many hungry people in the U.S. (and the world) and there’s already too much food waste to just throw more away because of lazy production standards!

NEW OREO FLAVORS

There are three new limited edition Oreos on the shelves:  Cherry Cola, Kettle Corn, and Piña Colada.

New Oreos

Let me know if you try them and what you think of them.

The only problem I have with these limited edition Oreos is that they trick you with a smaller package without a smaller price!!! 🙂

DON’T SNAP AT ME!

My good deeds and my quest to save a duck took a scary turn last weekend.

I heard a baby duck frantically chirping and saw the mother staring down at it stuck in mud and muck.  She flew away and I found a long stick to try to lift the baby out to safety.

It didn’t work, so I took my shoes and socks off and slowly trudged through the muck to get close enough to pull it out without sinking.

As I reached down to pull it out, it was still stuck.  I figured it was caught under dead cattail roots.  I reached down further to get a better grip.

Up came the duck — in the mouth of a creepy, long-necked turtle!!!  I had my freaking hand on the duck and the turtle that looked just like this one!  (It could have been this one!!!)

Creepy Turtle

My snap decision was to save the duck and I got it out of the turtle’s mouth before I was attacked!

Once the adrenaline rush passed, I was very creeped out to have been that close to the ugly turtle!

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMM!

Hmmmm

So, Monday morning I’m getting dressed for work and I hear a mosquito buzzing around my head.

Instinctively, I swat at my head and ear to kill it.

Ummm, that hurts when you forget that you have a Q-tip in your ear.  Oops and ouch!

KENT STATE SHOOTING ANNIVERSARY

It’s hard to believe it’s now been 48 years ago that four students were killed by the Ohio National Guard on the campus of Kent State University in northeast Ohio, on May 4, 1970.

Kent State Univ Shootings-4May70

Protests were expanding across the country on college campuses over America’s involvement in Vietnam.

As a reporter in Mansfield, Ohio, in 2000, I got to cover the 30th anniversary of the Kent State shootings.

Three decades later, it was still chilling to be there and the mood on campus was somber.

Here’s the story I filed for WMFD-68.*

*Ignore the shakiness because I recorded it with my phone from a VHS tape playing on television! 🙂

CINCO DE MAYO WEEKEND

Since it’s Cinco de Mayo weekend, would you be down to trying Chocolate-covered peanut butter filled jalapenos?

chocolate covered peanut butter filled jalapenos

I’d definitely be willing to try one!

“TALKING BACK”

I just finished reading my 15th book of the year, Andrea Mitchell’s “Talking Back… To Presidents, Dictators, and Assorted Scoundrels.”

Mitchell is a correspondent and anchor for NBC News.  She started at the network in the early-1970s after a stint in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

andrea mitchell

This was a very enjoyable look behind the glamour of television news.

She shared how rough it can be for a correspondent jetting from one continent to another without the luxuries of life, including sleep.

She talked poignantly about covering her first big story for NBC News — Jim Jones and the Jonestown, Guyana, mass Kool-Aid murder-suicide.

Jonestown-kool-aid

I was very impressed that of all of the news books I’ve this year (Cronkite, Koppel, Wallace, Schieffer, Stahl, etc.), Mitchell’s book was the first to take President Ronald Reagan to task for his gross mishandling of the AIDS crisis.

As you know from my years of writing about it, this was one of the main reasons I didn’t care for Ronald Reagan — even hating him for many years.

reagan aids

“Gay cancer” was first reported in the summer of 1981, even before it had a name, AIDS.  It wasn’t until early 1987 that Reagan made his first public comments about it.  By that time, 20,000+ Americans had already died.

Mitchell’s scoundrels include Syria’s Hafez al-Assad, Cuba’s Fidel Castro, and many more.

Excellent read!

TOM BROKAW ALLEGATIONS

Former “NBC Nightly News” and “Today” anchor and news icon Tom Brokaw is the latest to face sexual misconduct charges.

Last week, former NBC correspondent and anchor Linda Vester says Brokaw, on several occasions in the 1990s, tried to physically force himself on her.

She says he tried to kiss her two times and that he groped her in a NBC conference room.

Vester Brokaw

Brokaw denies Vester’s accusations.  He admits to meeting with her briefly and “the meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate”.

Brokaw response.png

Two other women have since come forward making accusations against Brokaw.  The latest said the unwanted advances took place 50 years ago!

#METOO, BUT SUPPORT FOR BROKAW

After Vester’s accusations, many influential women in the news business, that currently work with and have worked with Brokaw, defended his character.

maddowbrokaw

More than 60 women, including Rachel Maddow and Andrea Mitchell, signed a letter that called Brokaw, “a man of tremendous decency and integrity”.

“DIETLAND”

The first trailer for AMC’s “Dietland” is out.

The series is based on Sarai Walker’s incredible debut novel.

Dietland

It about Plum, a reclusive 300-pound-plus woman from California, now living in New York City and working for a fashion magazine catering to women.

Actually, her job, that allows her to work at home or from the cafe she frequents, is to answer emails from young women that think they’re writing to the editor of the magazine, Kitty, for advice.

Here’s the blog I posted about Walker’s excellent “Dietland” novel in January 2016.

https://anthonypeoples.wordpress.com/2016/01/14/losing-weight-degrading-women-is-torture-in-dietland/

“MOLLY’S GAME”

I can play Solitaire, Uno, Phase 10, and Old Maid, but that’s about the extent of my experience with card games.

So, while watching “Molly’s Game”, a true story about a competitive skier with Olympic aspirations who becomes rich by running underground Poker tournaments, I was lost for a bit.

But, I was mesmerized, as always, by Jessica Chastain and her acting!

Once the story became more of a drama than “Card Sharks”, I was all in.

REMEMBER THIS?

Were you part of the techno music scene back in the early-1990s?  I admit that I was into techno and dance music big time!

L.A. Style, a Dutch duo, hit the Top 5 in American dance clubs and #59 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “James Brown is Dead”. (He wasn’t at the time, but is now.)

It topped the charts in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain in 1991 and 1992.

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

a few of my favorites

Those are my Top Ten viewed blogs since I started my blog January 7, 2012.

I have to admit that my favorites on this list are #2 “Do We Really Need To Tell Adele She’s “Too Fat”? about weight and my eating disorder, #6 “When One Door Closes, Another One Opens” about losing my job, and from yesterday’s countdown from #20 to #11, “ABBA:  My Best Friend” at #15, “Marriage Expert Bristol Palin Weighs In On Marriage Equality” at #16, “Marriage Equality:  Is It Simply Black & White” at #17, “Have Your Reception Here Unless You’re Gay” at #19 (which was featured on the Facebook page of “Instinct”, a leading gay magazine), and “President Reagan, I No Longer Hate You” at #20.

Here’s yesterday’s recap of #20 to #11.

Most Popular Blog Entries In My First Year — Part One

Throughout 2013, on the one year anniversary of some of my favorite 2012 blogs, I’ll highlight them again.  There are some that didn’t make the year-end recap that I’m proud of and want to share again, in case you missed them.

Have a great weekend.

You Need To Shut Your “Fat” Mouth

It’s no surprise in this country that we have young girls and boys starving themselves or sticking their fingers or other objects down their throats to make themselves throw up their dinner to maintain some unrealistic body image or keep from being called “fat”.

I’ve been very open in the past about my nine-year battle with bulimia from 1986-1995.  Honestly, I’ll always have an eating disorder and although I’m not a practicing bulimic, it’s something that I think about every day.  I blogged about this back in February when fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld made a comment that singer Adele was “too fat”.  You can find that link at the bottom of this blog.

Yes, Adele is definitely a full-figured woman, but the name calling has to stop.

Guess who the latest “fat” celebrity is?  Guess who’s getting plenty of press now and it’s not for her new music or her recently announced North American tour dates?

Lady GaGa on stage at the KOKO club in LondonLady Gaga 1

It’s Lady Gaga and all of the publicity is because of her weight gain.  Those are pictures from her past tours.  Here is a picture of Lady Gaga last week.

And, Mother Monster posted this one on her Facebook page this week.

How many women and men across this increasingly obese country of ours would love to be this “fat”?

In the past, Gaga admitted that she’s battled anorexia and bulimia since she was 15 years old.  And, she’s not denying that she’s gained weight.

While dispelling rumors that she’s pregnant, she said, “I love eating pasta and pizza.  I’m a New York Italian girl. That’s why I have been staying out of New York. My father opened a restaurant. It’s so amazing. It’s so freaking delicious, but I’m telling you I gain five pounds every time I go in. So my dad wants me to eat there and I’m, like, I’ve got to go where I can drink green juice.”

And, on her Facebook page, Gaga posted this perfect quote by another legendary performer who also faced criticism because of her voluptuous figure.

Lady Gaga may have indirectly addressed body image and how people talk in “Dance in the Dark” from her “The Fame Monster” album.  Here are some of the lyrics:  “Silicon, saline, poison inject me/Baby, I’m a free bitch” and “Some girls won’t dance to the beat of the tribe/She won’t walk away/But she won’t look back/She looks good/But her boyfriend says she’s a mess”.

As a father of an 11-year-old daughter that loves pasta and desserts, I’m going to do everything that I can to let her enjoy the foods that she loves.  At the same time, I’ll be monitoring her weight without bringing it front and center with her.  I don’t want her to deal with what Lady Gaga and many others have to deal with.  People can be cruel.

I remember coming back home from college, in the mid-1980s, and having a friend of my mother’s make a comment about the amount of weight that I had gained after my first two years at college.  Yes, the “freshman 15” and “sophomore 15” caught up with me and I did have a little bit of stomach from the daily endless cafeteria buffet at Murray State.

Those words, regardless of whether it was meant as a light-hearted comment or not, weighed heavily on my mind and, in part, led to my eating disorder.

Karen

Back in 1983, the death of legendary singer Karen Carpenter from a heart attack brought on by anorexia nervosa, raised awareness for eating disorders and propelled it into the nation’s spotlight.  She began dieting in the 1960s when she weighed about 145 pounds.  By the fall of 1975, she was down to 91 pounds!

Prior to her death, after a two-week stay in New York, the singer had gained 30 pounds and was eating healthy.  However, the disease had already taken its toll on her body and she died on February 3, 1983.

karen carpenterpeople

We should be remembering Karen Carpenter only by her beautiful voice and not the ugly desire to be thin that killed her.  I want us all to be healthier.  Being a little thin or a little thick is fine.  However, being pencil thin or obese is not good.

The bottom line is that when we speak of someone’s weight, we should be tactful about it.  There’s a person with feelings behind that body, regardless of what size it is.

P.S.  While I was writing this, I considered adding a very inspirational song for me from the early-1990s.  It’s from a stunningly gorgeous and very slim woman that I had the pleasure of meeting in 1996.  I’m adding Faith Hill’s “Take Me As I Am” because this song gave me hope almost 20 years ago that, one day, I would find an amazing man that would “Take Me As I Am”.  And, I did.  Faith, thank you for this song.
