Random Thoughts — February 8, 2019

We’re snowed in again here in the Northland of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin with  almost a foot of new snow!

Here’s hoping that we all have a fantastic weekend and thank you for checking out my random thoughts.

I’M TAKING THE PLUNGE!!!!!!!

I’ve always wanted to do a Polar Plunge, but I’ve never had the opportunity.

Now, I get to do it for a great cause — Special Olympics Minnesota!

On February 16th in Duluth, Minnesota, a group of co-workers and I are raising money and are jumping into the frigid waters of Lake Superior.

Polar Plunge

Any donation, large or small, will add up!

Once you go to the page and if you want to make a smaller donation that what’s listed, just type it into the box!

Thank you in advance and here’s the link:

OUT AND PROUD & CLOSETED AND OUTING

I’ve always been out.  For me, the closets are for clothes.  But, that’s not the case for many others.

In the mid-1980s, as Rock Hudson was dying of AIDS and his management team was giving lame excuses for his sickness, one of my favorite authors and a leading LGBTQ activist Armistead Maupin outed him as being gay.

While it was an “open secret”, Maupin confirmed to mainstream news agencies that Hudson was gay.

Doris Day Rock Hudson 1985

Maupin also came down hard on lesbian actress Lily Tomlin in the 1990s for waiting so long to come out.

Personally, I think the LGBTQ community needs visibility.  Kids need role models to look up to when they feel alone in some small town or in a family that doesn’t accept gay people.

While I’d love for rumored LGBTQ celebrities and politicians to come out and be proud, it’s their choice.  I would not out them.

However, for politicians that are anti-LGBTQ or support anti-LGBTQ legislation, I’m all for outing them without any remorse at the first hint of them being deceptive and closeted!

Even for those “straight” celebrities that support religions (or cults pretending to be religion, TC/JT, I’m looking at you) that are anti-LGBTQ, I’m all for someone outing them when there’s proof!

“Come out, come out, wherever you are!”

Was Maupin right or wrong with outing Hudson as a gay man or saying Tomlin shouldn’t have waited so long to come out?

What do you think?

“THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN”

While I’ve read Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the Cities” novels many times (there are nine of them), the series was first written for a California newspaper.

The story begins in San Francisco in the 1970s and follows a core group of friends that become “family” over time.

If you’ve never heard of it, go to the library and get them or buy the first one on Amazon and you’ll be hooked!

“The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin”, a 2017 documentary, follows Maupin from his conservative upbringing in North Carolina (where he even worked for racist, homophobic Senator Jesse Helms) to becoming a writer in San Francisco and coming out.

It’s also an incredible love story!

GRADE:  A

So far, the “Tales of the City” novels have been made into three amazing miniseries with Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis.

A fourth arrives on Netflix this year!

“THE WIFE”

“And, the Best Actress Oscar goes to Glenn Close in ‘The Wife’!”

That’s what I predict we’ll be hearing Sunday, February 24th, at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony.

After six previous nominations and six losses, I think this is Close’s year.  Sorry, Lady Gaga, you may have more chances.

Close plays Joan, the wife of Jonathan Pryce’s Joseph Castleman, who’s awaiting a call from the Nobel Prize committee to see if he’ll earn one for his literary work.

Spoiler, not Spoiler: he does!

As the story unfolds, we see how Joseph and Joan meet and how their lives have played out over the decades — professionally and personally.

Close plays the perfect wife standing by her famous writer husband, but also feels the sting of disappointment over how her husband depends on her and takes her for granted — professionally and personally!

GRADE:  A

“BOY ERASED”

The main point I want to stress here is that “gay conversion therapy” is still going on across the U.S. and it’s sad, pathetic, and damaging!

This movie, with the always incredible Nicole Kidman and Lucas Hedges, is based on Garrard Conley’s 2016 “Boy Erased:  A Memoir” about his time in an Arkansas facility.

Pop singer Troye Sivan, director/actor Xavier Dolan, and Joe Alwyn (Taylor Swift’s boyfriend) also turn in amazing performances.

Since I hadn’t read Conley’s book when the movie was announced, I decided to wait to do so and now I’m ready to read it.

“Boy Erased” will be more powerful to people who are not all that familiar with gay conversion therapy.

While the movie was very touching, it was a bit sanitized.  For those of us that have heard the horror stories of conversion therapy, I felt it was too Hollywood-ized and needed a rougher edge!

It’s still a must see!

LAST TWO BOOKS READ IN 2018

It’s a tradition for me to read “Christmas in Plains” by my idol President Jimmy Carter every year at the holidays!

Christmas In Plains

“JACKIE AFTER JACK”

After finishing Ted Sorensen’s 800+ page biography of John F. Kennedy and “Christmas in Plains”, I jumped right into Christopher Andersen’s “Jackie After Jack”.

Anderson Jackie after Jack

Sorensen’s book on President Kennedy was more about Kennedy as “President” rather than Kennedy as a husband, father, brother, and friend.

I was shocked into reality with the abrasive tone difference at beginning of Andersen’s book, which pretty much talks about Kennedy’s assassination in graphic detail.

Of course, when you’re reading books about people, you don’t know how much is fact and how much is hearsay.

But, if only a fraction of the book is true, Jackie certainly loved her children and she was definitely what we’d call a “gold digger” today!

By no means do I think that President Kennedy, Senator Bobby Kennedy, and Jackie were angels, but, in retrospect, I’m a little disturbed about their alleged homophobia.

Andersen mentions several times about Jackie wanting to toughen her son, John John, up because she was didn’t want him to “grow up to be a fruit”.

I’m not giving a free pass on that, but I’m putting it in the context of the 1960s and 1970s and how most people have evolved when it comes to being gay.  I know the Kennedys would have been much more accepting in today’s world!

Thank God “homosexuality” (a truly clinical term that had implications of mental illness prior to 1973 in the United States) has now progressed to being “gay” and part of the acronym LGBTQ!

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Random Friday Thoughts — May 26, 2017

Although I’ve written blogs lately about my mood change, what I loved about the Quad Cities, and about my new city, Panama City, Florida, it’s been a while since I’ve done a “Random Friday Thoughts”.

So, here’s a short one.

GETTING SETTLED IN

My apartment is almost set up.  I still need to get a few pieces to finish the decorating process.  My living room and dining room are so awkwardly set-up that nothing really fits and that’s giving me fits!

As of now, my favorite room is the balcony, which has a small dining table and three chairs with several plants and trees.

WORK

While I miss my Quad Cities work wife, Emily Scarlett, immensely, I know she’s doing well in Columbia, South Carolina.  I hope her new work family is welcoming her as nicely as my new work family in Panama City is me.

I’m still “officially” training on the more advanced weather system, but I have filled in four times since Friday on the evening shift.

I’ll start mornings on Monday, June 12th.  I can’t wait.  You know I like my routine and, so far, nothing has been routine.

PANAMA CITY

This weekend marks my third weekend in Panama City and I still haven’t seen the Beaches, although I’ve seen “Beaches” with Bette Midler. 🙂  I have no desire to see the remake.

I want to be settled in at work and have my place all set up before I head out to Panama City Beach.

I hope to make great strides toward finishing the decorating of the apartment this weekend since I’m finishing up twelve straight work days.

I plan on going to the Farmer’s Market, maybe a couple of yard sales, and out to eat this weekend.  I promised myself I’d go out to eat once a week when I moved here and my first time was at Chow Time Buffet.

December 10

It was amazing and it may give Osaka Buffet back in Moline, Illinois, a run for its money! When my sister, Tammy, and Gerald visit in October, we’re definitely hitting it again.

This weekend, I’m trying to decide between Mexican or pizza?

“WHY HIM?”

I love James Franco.  I think he’s funny, sexy, and a great actor in dramatic roles, too (“Milk” and “127 Hours”).

james franco image

I wasn’t sure what to expect with “Why Him?”  Was it going to be hilarious like “This Is The End” or just okay with some funny parts like “The Interview”.

It’s definitely the former.  I was laughing several times.  Prepare yourself for a very hard-R movie.  That “R” could be for “raunchy” alone!

Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) and Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace) star as parents meeting their daughter’s older boyfriend for the first time.

He’s not exactly what they were expecting for their daughter, but then again just the way they found out about him should have been a big clue.

Keegan-Michael Key is very was funny, too, as Franco’s assistant.  And, the younger actors (Zoey Deutch and Griffin Gluck) were great, too.

Funny and raunchy — a great movie for escapism.

WARNING:  This is the “red band” trailer, which means it contains very strong language and sexual themes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GRADE:  A-

“THE BIRTH OF A NATION”

This was a very hard movie to watch, but a great one.

Any movie about this country’s ignorance over slavery and racism done without sugar-coating the issue is hard to watch.

This movie was the one that was expected to dominate this past Oscar race and wipe away “Oscars So White”.

However, when director, star, and co-writer Nate Parker’s past come up, the movie became too hot to handle and it bombed.

In case you don’t know the story, in 1999, Parker and the movie’s co-writer, Jean McGianni Celestin, were accused of raping a woman while in college in Pennsylvania. Both men claim the sex was consensual and no charges were brought again Parker and the ones against McGianni Celestin eventually were dropped.  The woman ended up committing suicide in 2012.

It also stars Aja Naomi King (“How to Get Away with Murder”) and Armie Hammer.

CHRISTMAS IS GETTING CLOSER 🙂

Okay, it’s not even officially summer yet, but Christmas is now just seven months away!

This year will be interesting because I won’t be decorating my house like I usually do and I won’t likely have snow.  I can almost say with certainty that I won’t have snow. 🙂

December 10

I’ll just have a Christmas tree and decorations around the apartment and some fun festive lights on the balcony!

I think it’s too soon for me to be one of those people that decorate a palm tree — maybe next Christmas!

P.S.  “Why Him?” could count as a Christmas movie! 🙂

“WISH ME AWAY”

Country music star Chely Wright stopped hiding a few years ago when she made a big revelation.

Chely NOH8

It changed the way people saw her and this incredible, heartbreaking documentary shows us what led up to that.

I read Chely’s autobiography, “Like Me”, three years ago and this documentary was a great supplement to that.

GRADE:  A

Earlier this week, I  shared a blog I wrote about Chely’s book, “Like Me”.  I’ll share the link again here if you haven’t had a chance to read it.

Movies To Rent & Two To Avoid

As the days get shorter, the nights get longer, and we inch closer and closer to the winter season, more and more people will be renting movies becoming couch potatoes.

Here are the recent movies we rented that you may have thinking about checking out.  Some you’ll want to see and some are definitely not worth spending your money or wasting your time on.

LILA & EVE

This drama stars Viola Davis (“How To Get Away With Murder”) and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez (“The Boy Next Door”) as grieving mothers who join a support group after their children are murdered .

Great performances from both actresses with several shocking twists.

If you love Davis as Annalise Keating on “Murder”, treat yourself to this one.

GRADE: B

“BOULEVARD”

Robin Williams stars in this drama, the late actor’s last on-screen movie role.  It’s new to DVD and it’s very touching.

You get heartbreaking performances from both Williams and Kathy Baker (“Picket Fences”).

Also, relative newcomer Roberto Aguire stands out as Leo, the man that helps Williams’ Nolan Mack to re-evaluate his life at 60.

Speaking of Aguire, I tweeted him recently about the movie and got this kind response.

Roberto

A must see!

GRADE:  A

“THE GIFT”

This psychological thriller stars Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton, who also wrote, produced, and directed the movie.

Simon (Bateman) and his wife, Robyn, move from Chicago to California near when Simon grew up.  They run into a man, Gordo, who claims that he and Simon went to high school together.  Simon doesn’t seem to remember Gordo.

Gordo begins popping up at their house with gifts and you realize that Simon does know Gordo and it becomes very interesting.

The story line twist is original and downright creepy.

GRADE:  B

“SPY”

As I’ve blogged before, I’ve never been a big fan of Oscar-nominated comedian Melissa McCarthy.

I enjoyed her dramatic performance in “St. Vincent” and thought I’d give the comedy “Spy” a chance with low expectations.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had with the movie and I laughed a lot — once you suspend some belief.

McCarthy and Rose Byrne were hilarious in the movie.

The biggest scene stealer was English actress Miranda Hart, who played a CIA agent and friend of McCarthy’s Susan Cooper.  I definitely want to see more of her.

GRADE:  B

“SAN ANDREAS”

Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) stars in this disaster flick about a massive earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded on Earth, that devastated California from Los Angeles to San Francisco along the San Andreas Fault.

If you suspend ALL belief in science and take the movie at face value for the popcorn thriller it is, you’ll enjoy it.

And, any movie that featuresKylie Minogue in a bit part is all right with me.

The $110 million dollar budgets movie grossed $470.5 million!

GRADE:  C

NOW, LET’S TALK SEQUELS NEW TO DVD…

“THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL”

I loved the 2012 surprise hit, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”.  The $10 million movie ended up making almost $137 million.

Thus, the expectations were high for the follow-up, which cost about the same to make, but only brought in $86 million.

And, it’s fitting.  While the main original cast returned, the movie was enjoyable, but didn’t really add too much to the story and it really didn’t need to be two hours long.

The Bollywood musical number toward the end of the movie bumped it up from a “C”.

GRADE:  B-

“PITCH PERFECT 2”

The 2012 original about the a cappella group, the Barden Bellas was entertaining, it spawned a radio hit, “Cups”, by Anna Kendrick and jump-started the career of Rebel Wilson, who played Fat Amy.

The sequel fell flat!

The only bright spots in the movie were the clueless, politically incorrect commentators played by Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins and the German powerhouse group “Das Sound Machine” (DSM).

If hearing Kendrick and Snoop Dog (Lion) or just Snoop perform “Winter Wonderland/Here Comes Santa Claus” wasn’t bad enough, by the time Fat Amy performed, “We Belong”, I felt sorry for Pat Benatar for allowing the movie to use the song!

Sadly, another sequel is coming in August 2017.

GRADE:  C-

“MAGIC MIKE XXL”

Here’s what I wrote and graded the summer 2012 original, “Magic Mike”:

“‘Magic Mike’ is definitely a fun, hot movie that also has a heart.  It’s not all about sweaty dollar bills, cheap sex, and chiseled bodies — although there’s nothing wrong with that.  Who am I to judge?”

GRADE:  A-

This sequel three years later was too talky and boring — flaccid!

“We didn’t want to show the best parts of the movie in this trailer, but it was very very hard to resist”.

That’s actually from the movie trailer.  Sure enough, my favorite scene in the whole movie is featured 23 seconds into the trailer — Joe Manganiello’s character doing a dance routine in a convenient store.

I think the “XXL” in the title means “extra extra lousy”.

Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, and Jada Pinkett Smith could not even save this movie!

GRADE:  D

If you saw any of these movies, let me know what you think.  You might have liked them more than me or hated them more.

Random Friday Thoughts — November 21, 2014

We’re closing in on the holiday season.

Thanksgiving is next week and I hope that you have a happy one and if you head out to the stores or the malls afterwards, I hope you don’t get mauled or that you don’t maul others!

Thanksgiving Forecast

I have a few random thoughts to share with you.  With the Christmas season coming up and my countdowns of my favorite movies, albums, and songs in December, this will be my last “Random Friday Thoughts” of 2014.  Enjoy!

NOT ONE, BUT TWO COUNTRY STARS COME OUT AS GAY THIS WEEK

Ty Herndon last hit the Top 40 on the Billboard Country chart in 2001 with a song that only peaked at #37.  While not impressive, that’s just one of thirteen hits he’s scored since his debut, “What Mattered Most”, topped the chart in 1995.

Ty Herndon

After two failed marriages, stints in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and a 1995 arrest in a Fort Worth, Texas, park for exposing himself to an undercover cop with drugs in his possession (the indecent exposure charged was dropped in a plea bargain), the Mississippi born singer is finally finding peace.

Earlier this week, he told “People” magazine, “I’m an out, proud and happy gay man” and that he’s been in a long-term relationship with his partner, Matt.

Herndon says he started thinking he was gay when he was 10-years-old and starting coming out to his family when he was 20, “My mother probably knew I was gay before I did. I remember sitting down with her and having the conversation.”  He adds, “She was more concerned about me having a happy life. You have to be able to do that in your own skin, and [my family] has seen me struggle with being gay my whole career.”

Herndon also talked to “People” about his demons.  “I have made a lot of mistakes in my life. They’ve been my mistakes, and I own them,” says Herndon. “I’ve done a lot of work around forgiveness with people that I’ve hurt and people I’ve not been honest with because of my sexuality.”

Of his thirteen country hits, seven reached the Top Ten with three topping the chart:  “What Mattered Most” (1995), “Living In A Moment” (1996), and “It Must Be Love” (1998).

Herndon plans to release a new solo album next year and is currently touring with Jamie O’Neal and Andy Griggs.

He plans on using his coming out to help others with visibility.  Herndon adds, “I just want to show up for the causes that I believe in. And be able to walk down the street and hold this man’s hand that will be my husband one day, and I know we’ll have kids one day.”

Ty, congratulations and I wish you and Matt the very best.  Enjoy country music, singing, touring, and whatever you choose to do in life.

BILLY GILMAN ALSO DECLARES PUBLICLY THAT HE’S GAY

Billy Gilman is now a charming, good-looking 26-year-old man, but he scored his first country hit back in 2000, when he hit #20 with “One Voice”, at the age of just twelve!

Billy Gilman

While he had one more modest hit later that year on the radio, his big accomplishment was having three Top Ten albums on the country chart in less than one year!

In a compelling video posted to YouTube yesterday, Gilman talks about what prompted him to come out and why he’s ashamed to say publicly that he’s gay.

He says, “It’s difficult for me to make this video, not because I’m ashamed of being a gay male artist, or a gay artist or a gay person, but it’s pretty silly to know that I’m ashamed of doing this knowing that I’m in a genre and an industry that’s ashamed of me for being me.”

And, sadly, that’s true.  Now, I know that not all country music fans are close-minded because many country music fans are friends and fans of mine.  But, you don’t have to look too far and too long to realize that what Gilman says is true.

Billy, coming out is courageous and I applaud you.  As you already know, there will be obstacles.  Deal with them and do what you love and you’ll have people follow you.

Best of luck!

DONATE, BUT AVOID THE EBOLA CHARITY SINGLE!

Back in the fall of 1984, Bob Geldof gathered a group of very popular English musicians including Culture Club, Duran Duran, Wham!, U2, Bananarama, Sting, Spandau Ballet, Paul Young, Phil Collins, and many more to record a charity single called “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”.

band_aid_1984

The money raised would go toward fighting starvation in Ethiopia.  By 1989, the single had already sold nearly 12 million copies worldwide.

It became the biggest selling single in UK history until 1997 when it was surpassed by Elton John’s tribute to Princess Diana, “Candle In The Wind”.

Band Aid Cover

Now, 30 years later, Geldof has brought together some of the biggest U.K. stars today including One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding, Rita Oro, and others for a re-working of the song to raise money and awareness to fight ebola.

However, the lyrics are awkward and the production pales in comparison to original.  I couldn’t even get through the song once.  You can find it online by searching for “Band Aid 30”.

The good news is that the song raised the equivalent of $1.7 million in just the first few minutes of being released.

By the way, in November 2004, there was another version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by “Band Aid 20”.  Like the new version, it fails miserably living up to the original even with one of my favorites, Kylie Minogue, involved.

If you’d like to donate money in the fight against ebola and save yourself from buying and hearing the “Band Aid 30” song, you can donate here:

https://www.unicefusa.org/donate/help-stop-ebola-west-africa/18771

And, here’s the original “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” and my early prayers that there won’t be a “Band Aid 40”!

REMEMBERING HARVEY MILK

Next week marks the 36th anniversary of the assassination of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician elected to public office in California as a member of the San Fransisco Board of Supervisors eleven months early.

It was on November 27, 1978, that Dan White, an unstable and disgruntled former supervisor on the board with Milk, went into City Hall and gunned down Milk and San Fransisco Mayor George Moscone in cold blood.

I just read the book, “The Mayor of Castro Street” by the late writer Randy Shilts, who was born right here in the Quad Cities, in Davenport.  What an incredible read and what an amazing man!

If you don’t know much about Harvey Milk, the man who help ignite the LGBT movement in the late-1970s, just as the Stonewall Riots in New York did in the summer of 1969, check out this feature I wrote a couple of years ago.

https://anthonypeoples.wordpress.com/2012/11/03/11-3-1977-harvey-milk/

 “PEOPLE” SEXIEST MAN ALIVE

31-year-old Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) was named “People” magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive”.

Chris-Hemsworth

While he is definitely gorgeous and I haven’t checked out the magazine yet, my choice for “Sexiest Man Alive” would be Enrique Iglesias.

Enrique Iglesias

James Marsden or Matt Bomer would also be high on that list, too.  For others that made my list last year, check out this fun blog I posted in October 2013.

https://anthonypeoples.wordpress.com/2013/10/17/least-thought-provoking-entry-yet/

If I had to update the list now, it would have to include singer Nick Jonas and actors Hugh Dancy (“Hannibal”), Theo James (“Divergent”), and Jack Falahee (Connor Walsh on “How To Get Away With Murder”).

Nick JonasHugh DancyTheo James

Andrew Lincoln

Wait, how did Andrew Lincoln of “The Walking Dead” pop up there? 🙂

MORE TAYLOR SWIFT ADMIRATION

If I thought “Shake It Off”, the first release from the mega-hit album, “1989”, was awesome, the follow-up, “Blank Space” is incredible.

I thought that when I first heard the song, but once I saw the over-the-top crazy video, there was no doubt!

TAYLOR, BY THE NUMBERS

Taylor Swift is still on fire.  “Blank Space” vaults from #13 to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Taylor the first woman to ever replace herself at #1.  This week, “Shake It Off” drops from the top spot to #3.

Taylor Swift

The first act to do that was the Beatles back in 1964.  They actually replaced themselves at #1 back-to-back with three chart toppers:  “I Want To Hold Your Hand”, “She Loves You”, and “Can’t Buy Me Love”.

Also, Taylor’s album “1989” spent a third week at number one on the album chart selling another 312,000 copies.  In just three weeks, it’s up to sales of two million!

Only one other album in 2014 has sold more, the “Frozen” soundtrack and it’s up to 3.25 million.

“1989” and “Frozen” are the only million sellers this year!

With the Christmas buying season hitting full force next week, which album will end up as the biggest seller in 2014?  You can never count out “Frozen” since it has a big lead and it won’t go away, but I’m putting my money on T-Swizzle!

TWO HUMOROUS LOOKS AT TAYLOR

Thanks to my friend, Kathy McCoy, for bringing this to my attention from “Saturday Night Live”.  This is so me!

And, here’s “Blank Space” as a horror movie trailer!

ADAM JOSEPH — BEST DAD OF THE YEAR!

There are great dads out there all over the world, whether they are single dads, dads married to a woman, or dads that have another great man.

My vote for dad of the year goes out to fellow television meteorologist Adam Joseph of 6ABC in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Adam is taking the holidays and the important November ratings period off to be with his son, Jacob.  Here’s what he posted on his Facebook page earlier this month.

Adam Joseph

Back in August, Adam not only publicly came out as gay, but he also announced that his partner, Karl, were proud dads of newborn, Jacob.

Adam told philly.com, “While I believe every person reading this article should respect others’ privacy, I decided to share this personal moment for my son.”

He added, “I want my son to be proud of both his fathers.  From the day he was born, I want him to understand that families come in all shapes, sizes and colors.  In our eyes, as long as there is unconditional love for a child, it doesn’t matter who that child looks up to or leans on… This is unconditional love and hope.  I truly wish that every person wanting a family can feel this overwhelming happiness and joy.”

Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Holidays, and Happy 2015, Adam, Karl, and Jacob!

MY PICK HIT IS NOW A CROSSOVER HIT

Last month in October, while in Tel Aviv, Israel to celebrate my birthday, I was so thrilled to get to see VH-1 and music videos all the time.

One new song that caught my attention was “Stolen Dance” by the German duo, Milky Chance.

That song has spent ten weeks #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and is now a Top 40 radio airplay hit here in America!

THE NEXT TIME YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT SNOW…

Think about poor western New York.  Lake effect snows this week have dumped more than seven feet of snow (that’s more than 84″ of snow)!

Sadly, the storm has killed at least ten people and stranded thousands.

However, I’m looking for the silver lining in this historic snow event.

Home Near Buffalo

Is this picture not too funny?

Last season, the second snowiest on record in the Quad Cities, we picked up 65.1″ and that was from October 2013 to March 2014!

SOLO BONUS JONAS (NO, NOT FRANKIE)

Nick Jonas, the youngest in the pop trio, the Jonas Brothers, is having a great year.

He’s earning rave review in his role as Nate Kulina on the hit Audience Network series, “Kingdom”.

Additionally, he just hit #6 on the Billboard Album chart with his self-titled latest album and he just scored his first Top Ten solo hit on Billboard Hot 100 as “Jealous” moves to #10.

As part of the Jonas Brothers, he scored eight hits on the Hot 100 with two of them reaching the Top Ten.

A SEXY CHRISTMAS FLASHBACK

Remember this sexy “Show Your Joe” KMart commercial from last year?

If you’re a fan of the Showtime series, “Dexter”, you might recognize Darri Ingolfsson, the third from the left.  He played Oliver Saxon/Daniel Vogel in the eighth and final season.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving and you get family time, even if you have to work.

I work Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve, but I’m still going to make the most of my family time and the holidays when I get home from work!

If you’re still not buying into the amazing Christmas music on the Quad Cities’ Mix 96 yet, maybe this beautiful Coca-Cola commercial will get you into the Christmas spirit!

Now, I want a Coke Zero!

Thank you for checking out my last “Random Friday Thoughts” of 2014.   Let me know if you agree or disagree with me on anything that I wrote today.

My favorite albums, songs, and movies of 2014 are coming soon, along with another blog or two.

Random Friday Thoughts — April 25, 2014

The weekend is here and that means, at least, two things:  my random Friday thoughts and two days off work.

Over the past two weekends, I had to work an extra day on one of them and I had two events to attend on behalf of work the other weekend.  However, it’s all about relaxing this weekend for me.  Enjoy yours and thank you for checking out my random thoughts today.

The Following S 2

Warning:  If you’re a fan of “The Following” and you haven’t watched this last episode, stop reading my blog when you get to the country music segment remembering a music star that recently died.

Translation:

spoiler-alert

I’m venting at the bottom of this blog about last Monday night’s episode and why I may not be following “The Following” next season!

PAT SAJAK, MAY I BUY A CLUE?

I’ve known who Pat Sajak is since I was a teenager and he started hosting the mega-popular game show, “Wheel of Fortune”.

sajak

Until last Friday, I didn’t know much more about him and didn’t really feel I needed to until he sent out this tweet.

At first glance, I thought it was interesting.  Then, I thought about it a little more and starting thinking that either he had had a few drinks or that he was being funny.

On closer examination of why he may have sent it, I thought that it was a way to express his conservatism.  It’s well-known that he’s right-wing, that he blogs for conservative websites, and he’s made many contributions to Republican political candidates.

I’ve concluded that it’s his way to offset all of the recent “coming out” stories by gay celebrities.

I was never a fan of Sajak’s, nor did I dislike him.  And, I still don’t dislike him.  Whatever his reason, this correspondence soothed my feathers a little.

DO PEOPLE NEED TO “COME OUT”?

That last tweet I shared between Maliheh and Pat Sajak brings up a topic that I’ve talked about many times.  My headline on this random thought is ‘”Do People Need To “Come Out?”‘ and I’ll keep my answer short.  Yes!

daniel-franzese

Just this week, “Mean Girls” star Daniel Franzese came out as “gay”.

In February, “Juno” actress Ellen Page and college football player Michael Sam announced that they were gay, as did Olympic bronze medalist Tom Daley, this past December.

Yes, I think people need to come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, whether they’re celebrities or not.  While some may argue that it’s nobody’s business if someone is LGBT and that’s it personal.  That’s true.

But, coming from someone (me) that’s known he was gay since childhood, I know firsthand that everyone needs role models and someone who “feels” like they do or who are like them.

It’s a scary, lonely world when you think you’re alone.

Anthony April 1969

It’s a lot different today than in the late-1960s and early-1970s when I was looking for someone like me and someone to say, “Just be yourself” or “You’re not alone”.

SIR CLIFF RICHARD’S PERFECT RESPONSE

73-year-old English singer Cliff Richard has scored nine Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the United States.

However, in the U.K., he’s charted an incredible 126 Top 40 hits since he first first appearance in 1958.  Of those hits, 69 reached the Top 10 and fourteen topped the chart.  And, just last fall, he released his 100th album.  That’s one reason that in England, he’s Sir Cliff Richard.

I’ve always been a fan of his music and, as a teenager, I didn’t know if he was married, gay or straight, or whatever.  All I know is that I loved his voice, he was cute, and he sang with Olivia Newton-John!

olivia_newtonjohn_cliff_richard-suddenly

Recently, he was on Australia’s “A Current Affair” and addressed why he never married and the rumors about his sexuality.

While having people to look up to is important, I loved his perfect response, “If I was gay, would it make any difference?  Would you not come to my concert if I was gay?”

Cliff_Richard

Here in the U.S., his highest charting hit was “Devil Woman”.  It reached #6 in 1976.

However, “We Don’t Talk Anymore”, which was released in late 1979, became his biggest selling song of all time with five million copies sold.   When the song spent two weeks at #7 in January 1980, Richard became the first artist to reach the Top 40 on the Hot 100 with songs in the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, and the 1980s.

From that video, you can see why this 15-year-old (back in 1980) had the biggest crush on him.  That crush only intensified when he sang a duet, “Suddenly”, with Olivia Newton-John later that year!

DID LINCOLN MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION WITH THE SOUTH?

Mrs. Betty Bowers, America’s Best Christian, takes a look at how the south differs from its counterparts across the rest of the country.

This is a hilarious look at a sad situation — and I grew up in the South!  (And, yes, this right ticked a couple of people off, but it’s humor!)

Mrs. Betty Bowers is played by Canadian comedian Deven Green, who now lives in Los Angeles.

Jodie Foster Alexandra Hedison Marry

Last weekend, Oscar winner Jodie Foster married her girlfriend, Alexandra Hedison, in a private ceremony.

And, for those that thought Jodie’s acceptance speech at the Golden Globes in January 2013 was a little cryptic and wondered if she was “coming out”, I think she’s gay. 🙂

You can read about that night here and why I thought that speech was so powerful and why is was and wasn’t important.

“FROZEN” — NEWS WORTHY

Coming from this Quad Cities’ morning meteorologist, Bob Herzog is one of the funniest local news men on television.

He’s the traffic reporter and one of the morning anchors for Local 12, WKRC, Cincinnati’s CBS affiliate.  Bob also does a segment called “Dance Party Friday”.

Recently, he took advantage of the wicked winter weather and did this incredible parody to “Let It Go” from “Frozen”.

“I’M A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY”

The country music world lost one its 1990s hit makers last weekend when 43-year-old Kevin Sharp died.

His mother stated the cause was “complications due to cancer” and his website added “ongoing complications from past stomach surgeries and digestive issues” as a cause.

Kevin Sharp

Sharp was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer when he was a teenager and was given little chance of survival.  He beat the odds, but continued to have problems with the radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

In 1996, he exploded on the country music scene and topped the chart with his first release, “Nobody Knows”.

The two follow-up, “She’s Sure Taking It Well” and “If You Love Somebody” peaked at #3 and #4 respectively in 1996 and 1997.  His last three singles failed to reach the Top 40 on the Billboard Country charts.

R.I.P. Kevin!

“THE FOLLOWING” SHOCKER BEFORE THE FINALE!

This your last chance to look away.

If you stop here, I appreciate you checking out my blog this week.  Enjoy the season finale of “The Following” Monday night.  I’m sure I will, too, with one exception!

spoiler_alert_300_w2

In season one of “The Following”, my favorite characters were Agent Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore), Emma (Valorie Curry), Jacob (Nico Tortorella), and Paul (Adan Canto)!

Shawn AshmorePaul, Emma, & Jacob

Two of them didn’t make it to season two!

This season, my favorite characters are the two survivors from season one, Mike and Emma, along with Lily Gray (Connie Nielsen) and her two psychotic sons, Luke and Mark, played with amazing creepiness by English actor Sam Underwood (Zach Hamilton on the last season of “Dexter”).

The Following - Sam Underwood

So, I had this season all figured out going into the last three episodes of the season.  I knew it was going to come down to a confrontation between Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and Mike Weston and the villains: Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), Emma, Luke, Mark, and Lily.

Lily Gray

And, then Lily was murdered in the final minutes of the second episode from the finale!

I had to re-think my plan.  I knew that the twins would have to avenge their mother’s death, so they’d play a big role in the final two episodes.

Joe-Emma

In the first season, Emma was strong-willed and cold-hearted.  However, she was still vulnerable around Joe.  For much of this season, she was under-utilized and weak until the last couple of episodes when her iciness re-surfaced and I loved it.

Emma was beginning to doubt whether Joe had lost focus (he has) with this whole boring cult-loving, Bible-quoting, God-like vision he has of himself.

Joe Emma Cult The Following

Since “The Following” was renewed for a third season, I saw Emma taking all she could take of Joe and his carelessness and killing him!  At that point, she and the twins would go on to terrorize Ryan, Mike, the FBI, and America next season.

However, that theory was shot to hell when Emma was brutally murdered in the final minutes of Monday’s episode by Joe Carroll’s ex-wife, Claire (Natalie Zea).  While I was shocked beyond belief with the killing, it was incredible drama!

The Following Silence

I know that Emma is dead, but if you’re holding out for the magic of television and drama to reveal that she’s alive, stop hoping!

Valorie Curry, who plays Emma, tells tvguide.com, “They really wanted to drive the point home.  It’s so funny, because people are on Twitter like, ‘She’s just in a coma! Maybe she’s alive.’ I’m like, she was stabbed, she was thrown out a window, and then staked like a vampire. There’s no coming back from impaling.”

R.I.P. Emma Hill!

Valorie Curry The Following

Valorie Curry, you are amazing and thank you for the past two years!  Best wishes!

Now, what do I think will happen on the season two finale?

Joe will escape the church and be killed for real this time by Claire, who will be murdered by Tilda (Mackenzie Marsh), the Korben member and Joe Carroll follower.

Tilda

Carrie Cooke, the author and television reporter and Ryan’s love interest, will die.

Carrie Cooke

And, I think that Luke will also meet his death at the hands of Agent Weston as he tries to get revenge for Lily’s death.  And, since Lily told Mark, the sensitive twin, to “man up” right before she died, I think he’ll survive and wreak havoc in season three.

following Mark

Stay tuned.  The season finale is Monday night, 10 Eastern/9 Central, on Fox!

Have a great weekend and thank you for checking out my random thoughts.

Random Friday Thoughts — May 3, 2013

After working eleven of the last twelve days, I’m ready for the weekend.  While the weather will not be perfect, it’s going to be better than the rainy, chilly 40s that we’re going to experience today or the 4-11″ of snow that parts of Iowa saw Thursday!   Have a great one.  Here are the random thoughts on my mind today.

Iowa Mow Snow

STILL LACKING MOTIVATION

While I exercise daily, I really haven’t mastered the art of losing any weight.  Thus, I’m still 13 pounds from my ideal weight for the summer.  One of these days I’ll get back into the same groove from last summer when I lost 25 pounds.  Don’t worry, I didn’t have any trouble finding twenty of those pounds!  🙂

WEEKEND PLANS

Saturday night, we’re having friends over for dinner.  I’m making the appetizers, the salad, a veggie dish, and two desserts, while Ray is making two entrees (one meat and one vegetarian).  Gretel is looking forward to it because there will be three other girls here that she’s never met.

On Sunday, I’m taking part in a fundraiser for the “Metropolitan Community Church QC” as a judge in a chili cook-off contest!  I’ve done this in the past and it’s a fun time.  So, if you don’t have plans Sunday evening and you’re in Moline, come on by.

“THE FOLLOWING” SEASON FINALE

After getting disgruntled with “The Following” midway through the season, I knew that the finale would be mind-blowing and it was!   All I can say is AMAZING!  The payoff was worth it and I’ll be tuning in next January to see what happens.  For a time there, I was ready to move on after this season, but not now!

“DEXTER”

The countdown to season seven of  “Dexter” on DVD is now down to 11 days and I can’t wait!  The final season (the eighth) begins on Showtime at the end of June and I bet that they have it out on DVD before Christmas because if spoilers announce how the series ends, who would want to buy it on DVD?

Spoiler alert:  The season 8 trailer is incredible.  Don’t watch it unless you have already watched season 7!!!!!!!!

KSL, SALT LAKE CITY, GET A CLUE!

Censorship continues to thrive at the NBC affiliate, KSL, in Salt Lake City.  In August 2012, the station refused to air “The New Normal” and it passed on “The Playboy Club” (as did the rest of America, by choice), and it doesn’t show “Saturday Night Live”.

The latest victim of the station’s self-imposed programming censorship is “Hannibal”.

Hannibal_Gory_3_22_13

On its Facebook page, the station posted this:  “PROGRAMMING NOTE: After viewing the past few episodes, as well as receiving numerous complaints from viewers, KSL TV will cancel the airing of the NBC show “Hannibal” on Thursday evenings.  This decision was made due to the extensive graphic nature of this show. The time slot will be replaced with a special edition of KSL 5 News at 9 p.m.  NBC remains a valued partner to KSL TV.  KSL is confident that with the proliferation of digital media, those who wish to view the program can easily do so.”

It really ticks me off when individual stations pick and choose what they think people should see.  Let people decide by watching or not watching the show.  As much as I love “Hannibal” and its gore and violence, America doesn’t seem to agree with me.  The premiere garnered 6.77 million viewers and the ratings have dropped big time in just four episodes.

LOVE IT, BUT I STILL HAVE AN ISSUE WITH IT

As I was watching the episode, “Coquilles”, last Thursday night, I felt a disconnect with the show.  It felt like something was missing.  There was no mention of characters Abigail Hobbs or Dr. Alana Bloom, both integral to the plot line in the first three episodes.  Upon a little investigating, I found out why.

Show producer Bryan Fuller decided to pull the original “fourth” episode, “Ceuf”, because of the recent real-life events in Boston and the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings last December.  In this episode that will air in its entirety in international markets (and will likely appear on the DVD), Molly Shannon plays the “criminal of the week”, a teacher who brainwashes kids into killing other kids.

My problem with this is that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings took place almost five months ago and if the producers were that uneasy about the theme of this episode, they knew that back there and they could have done some editing or re-shoots to maintain continuity in the show!  Come on, NBC “Hannibal”, nobody is watching you anyway, so don’t tick me off. 🙂

I’m still patiently waiting for Gillian Anderson’s five episodes as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Lecter’s psychotherapist!  Her hair may not be as gingery as FBI agent Dana Scully from “The X-Files”, but she is one hot mama!

STILL BEHIND, BUT CATCHING UP

As I’ve said before, I always read the new “Entertainment Weekly” when it arrives and I don’t get too far behind on “Instinct”, “The Advocate”, and “Out”.  However, I had a huge stack of old “Men’s Fitness”, “Details”, and “Boston” magazines that I’ve recently blown through and recycled.  Now, I’m working on the three-year-old “Rolling Stone” issues.  Luckily, the subscription was only for six months!

Ironically, last week in my blog I talked about my health and the thought of dying.

And, in the July 8-22, 2010, double issue of “Rolling Stone” with Lady Gaga on the cover, she talked about her health.  And, it sort of touches on what I talked about and was pretty much a scary precursor of her own health issues this past winter when she was forced to cancel the rest of her “Born This Way Ball” tour because of a labral tear of the right hip caused by strenuous repetitive movements involved in the shows and required surgery.

Lady Gaga Las Vegas

On becoming a hypochondriac, Gaga said, “I don’t want to be one, so most of the time I’m like, ‘F**k it, I’m fine.’  At a certain point, you’re so beyond the point of exhaustion that you don’t know:  Do I have a health problem that may or may not be real, or am I just really tired.”

I guess I’m not alone. 🙂

I saw Lady Gaga in concert in Las Vegas this past January before she cancelled the rest of the tour.  She was incredible and the mammoth set was over-the top!

A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE COMES OUT

By telling “Sports Illustrated” this week, “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay”, Jason Collins becomes the first professional athlete in the United States to come out.  Most of the reaction to his announcement has been positive.

jason-collins

While I’m happy that Collins can finally live his life without hiding who he is, I’m just sorry that we still live in a world where it still matters!  The bottom line should be “good for him” and “who cares”, just be happy”.  People are just so concerned with what others are doing when they should be focused on their own lives.

Pro tennis player Andy Roddick says, “Yesterday was an incredible day for athletes everywhere. Jason Collins’ courage and leadership in coming out reminds me of how important it is for an athlete to be able to be true to him or herself.  As an Athlete Ally, I want to support every athlete to feel comfortable and confident being themselves and to make sure that all people – players and fans alike – are  welcome and included in tennis.”

andyroddick

Good for you, Andy!  And, good for us. 🙂

LET THAT FREAK FLAG FLY!

In about a month (June 9th), we’ll be seeing Ke$ha and Pitbull in concert outside Chicago for Gretel’s birthday!  I cannot to see Ke$ha just to see what crazy things she’ll do.  Say what you will about her auto-tuned music, but it’s fun.

Ke$ha Tickles The Ivory

And, regardless of what you think of her, check out this outrageous interaction with Conan O’Brien about how she composed some of her favorite songs on her “Warrior” album, which came out in late 2012 that I gave a grade of “A” and blogged about in January!

Too flipping funny!

It’s okay Ke$ha, I love dinosaurs, too!  Roar!!!!!!

PEEPS’ ’80s FRIDAY FLASHBACK

Everyone knows Madonna and everyone has an opinion about her.

In 1983, my freshman year in college, I fell in love with her when she was just a dancer and singer from Detroit, Michigan who moved to New York City to be a star.  Before her first song, “Holiday”, made it to pop radio in the fall of 1983 and peaked at #16, Madonna had already scored two #3 dance club hits, “Everybody” and “Burning Up”.

I KNOW YOU REMEMBER THAT ONE, BUT PROBABLY NOT THIS ONE!

English singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor has scored 9 solo hits in the U.K with six reaching the Top ten and the first three reached either #2 or #3.  She was also featured on two other hits in the U.K., including Spiller’s #1 smash, “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)”.  “Groovejet” also reached #3 on the Billboard Dance chart here in the U.S.

Sophie never crossed over in America.  Her biggest chart success on this side of the Atlantic was the #26 Billboard Dance hit, in 2002, “Murder on the Dancefloor”.  It was one of my favorite songs during my last two-year stay in Chicago and at Roscoe’s.  It’s from the album, “Read My Lips”, which includes a remake of the Cher smash, “Take Me Home”.

Now, I want to dance and have fun.

Have yourself a great weekend and thank you for checking out my random thoughts.

Jodie Foster “Coming Out” — Why It Is and Isn’t Important

I think the most shocking part of Sunday night’s 70th Golden Globe Awards presentation on NBC was that Ben Affleck beat out Steven Spielberg and Kathryn Bigelow for Director and then “Argo” stunned “Lincoln” and “Zero Dark Thirty” for Best Movie Drama.

Jodie Foster

However, it was the speech that movie icon Jodie Foster gave as she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award that has people buzzing.  Many were quick to say that she “came out” as a lesbian.  Some were just confused by her words.

So, what did she say and why does it matter?

“While I’m here being all confessional, I just have the sudden urge to say something I’ve never been able to say in public. A declaration that I’m a little nervous about. Not quite as nervous as my publicist, huh, Jennifer? But uh, you know, I’m just going to put it out there. Loud and proud. I’m going to need your support. I am — single.  Yes, I am.  I’m single!”

That was incredible.  I loved it.  Even before she said that, I said to Ray, “Wouldn’t it be something if she just shocked everyone and finally said, ‘I’m gay’, so the rumor mill would have nothing more to talk about?”

Jodie went on to say, “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago, back in the stone age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends, and family, coworkers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her. To everyone she actually met. But now, apparently I’m told, that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime time reality show. You guys might be surprised, but I’m not Honey Boo Boo child.

And, she was so heartfelt and honest when she added, “If you had been a public figure since the time you were a toddler, if you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too would value privacy above all else.  Privacy!”

I was touched by her speech about her private life, her mother, and Cydney Bernard, her “heroic co-parent, my ex partner in love, but righteous soul sister in life, my confessor… most beloved BFF of 20 years.”

jodie_foster_and_cydney_bernard_photo

Foster:  “Thank you, Cyd. I am so proud of our modern family, our amazing sons, Charlie and Kit who are my reason to breathe and to evolve. … Boys, in case you didn’t know it, this song, like all of this, this song is for you.”

I’ve always been a huge fan of Jodie Foster.  It wasn’t because she was sexy, a woman, a mother, straight, or lesbian.  I love her because she is a phenomenal actress.  Would it change the way I thought of her if she proclaimed, “I’m gay”?  Not one bit!  I can’t wait to see more about her next movie, “Elysium”.  It’s a science fiction film from the director of “District 9”, an Oscar nominee, and it comes out August 9, 2013, and stars Matt Damon.
elysium con

The timing for this blog about Jodie Foster is fitting.  Since my blog is now just over a year old, I’m highlighting some of my favorite blogs that I’ve written on those blog’s anniversary.  And, it was one year ago today that I debated on whether celebrities should be “outed” or live their lives privately.

As I read over that blog, I haven’t changed my opinion.  Yes, celebrities coming out would make it easier for people struggling with being LGBT to have role models.  But, they deserve a certain degree of privacy and the right to make that decision.  However, people who crusade against the LGBT community and are secretly gay should be forced out of the closet.

In last year’s article, I talked about whether pro football player Tim Tebow was gay and yes, it did mention Jodie Foster!

Here is the link and I really hope you check it out to understand more about outing celebrities.  I welcome your thoughts about Jodie Foster at this year’s Golden Globe Awards and about my article from last year.  By the way, in the past year, Anderson Cooper came out as a gay man.
