Random Friday Thoughts — January 11, 2019

I hope you had a great holiday season and that your New Year is off to a great start!

Here are a few thoughts I want to share — mainly some recommendations.

Have a great weekend!

MY BLOG JUST TURNED 7

On January 7, 2012, I decided that instead of just posting a thought on Facebook, I would expand on whatever I was thinking at the time.

That bright idea led me to starting this blog!

THEY SAID WHAT (on Twitter)?

TENNIS LEGEND MARTINA NAVRATILOVA:  “I can tell you all this for sure- whatever ridiculous propaganda we were fed in then Czechoslovakia, which was mandated by Soviet Union- pales next to the lies being told and repeated by trump and his ilk. I am not kidding… trump truly trumps the communists. And that’s not easy”

ADULT STAR STORMY DANIELS (on the night of 45’s immigration prime time plea): “If you’re looking for anything even remotely worth watching tonight at 9pm EST, I will be folding laundry in my underwear for 8 minutes on Instagram live.”

And, one more…

WISH I WAS IN VEGAS NOW!

But, since I can’t be, I’ll share this fun video that features Olivia Newton-John reprising her hit “Magic” (1980) as the chorus.

This version hit #1 on the Billboard dance chart in 2015 for Olivia, her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi and DJ Dave Aude.

Olivia and Chloe are the only mother-daughter team to achieve that on the Billboard Dance Club Song chart!

It features a graveyard of Las Vegas signage of the city’s casino history, show girls, Chippendales, and Britney, Tina Turner, Marilyn Monroe, and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.  Oh wait, those are illusionists!

“BIRD BOX”

This Netflix original is a great, creepy movie with an all-star cast.  It’s also being watched in record numbers on the streaming service after a limited theatrical run.

Sandra Bullock is fantastic as usual.

Trevante Rhodes

I loved seeing Trevante Rhodes in a major role after his career making part in the Oscar winner “Moonlight”.

Some say the movie is tacky in the way it handles mental illness and suicide.

“Bird Box” would have gotten a higher grade if not for the unbelievable “rapids” scene outcome!

GRADE:  B

“ROMA”

Critics are raving about this latest masterpiece and semi-autobiographical film from director Alfonso Cuarón ( “Gravity” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”).

It follows the life of a live-in housekeeper, Cleo, to a middle-class family in Mexico City in the early-1970s.

Lead actress Yalitza Aparicio, who’s not a trained actress, was spectacular and the main reason to see this film.

While the movie is beautifully shot and Cuarón lets the movie breathe, some scenes go on way too long!

Maybe it’s just me because I wasn’t blown away by his critically acclaimed movie “Gravity” either, but I loved Cuarón’s 2001 film, “Y Tu Mama Tambien”.

GRADE:  B-

“PEPPERMINT”

This revenge drama stars Jennifer Garner as a mother hellbent on finding the scum bags that murdered her husband and little girl.

While you had to suspend disbelief in some scenes, it was an entertaining movie.

If you saw and loved Jodie Foster’s much better movie “The Brave One”, you’ll like this one.

It makes me want to binge watch ABC’s “Alias” now!

“Peppermint” was my 16th favorite movie I saw in 2018.

GRADE:  B+

“GAME NIGHT”

I usually prefer dramas over comedy, but this one starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams was funny (at times).

My favorite scene was when a character is shot and another one has to clean the wound and stop the bleeding.  Hilarious!!!!!!!

Any movie that features my main crush Michael C. Hall (Ben Whishaw is the other) gets my attention.

GRADE:  B-

“LIZZIE”

We’ve all heard the real life story about Lizzie Borden!

Yes, the one that “gave her mother 40 whacks; when she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41”!

This very compelling drama features incredible performances by actresses Chloe Sevigny as Lizzie and Kristin Stewart as her family’s maid.

GRADE:  B

“BLACK CHRISTMAS” (1974)

I’ve seen the 2006 remake of “Black Christmas” and I finally caught the 1974 original this holiday season.

It stars the late Margot Kidder.

Considering this movie was pre-“Halloween” (1978), it tried to build up the suspense, but failed.

I was more surprised by the language that was allowed 40+years ago!

GRADE:  C+

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

They Said What??? President Obama, Ke$ha, & Daniel Radcliffe

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

(in his Inauguration speech):  “It is now our generation’s task to carry on what those pioneers began. For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law — for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.”

POP SINGER KE$HA

(before performing “Your Love Is My Drug” at a charity show in Washington DC Monday night):  I’m looking for a boyfriend or a girlfriend. This next song’s about love, so I’m going to dedicate this to Mr. Barack Obama because I love him.”

MORE KE$HA

“I’m very proud to be an American tonight. I’m excited we have another four years.  I really appreciate him addressing equal rights,” said Ke$ha, who is a supporter of gay rights. It’s an issue very close to my heart.”
U.S. MARINE BAND SPOKEPERSON KRISTIN DuBOIS

(on Beyonce’s flawless version of the National Anthem at President Obama’s inauguration. Note:  All music for inaugural ceremonies is recorded as a precaution.):  “We don’t know why the decision was made. She did not actually sing.”

MARINE CORPS. CAPTAIN GREGORY WOLF

“Regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter’s vocal performance, no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded.”

ANNA BURNS WELKER

(wife of New England Patriots star wide receiver, Wes Welker, after the Baltimore Ravens eliminated the Patriots):  “Proud of my husband and the Pats.  By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis’ Wikipedia page.  6 kids and 4 wives.  Acquitted for murder.  Paid a family off.  Yay!  What a hall of fame player!  A true role model!”

MORE FROM WELKER

“I apologize to Ray Lewis and his family for my comments.  In no way did I mean for them to be mean or hurtful.  I’m embarrassed for being a sore loser.  I wish Ray and the Ravens good luck.  Lesson learned!”

“HARRY POTTER” ACTOR DANIEL RADCLIFFE

(on his gay sex scenes in his new movie, “Kill Your Darlings”):  “It was something new.  But you know what, we shot that whole scene in maybe an hour and a half so it was incredibly fast-paced. I didn’t really have time to stop to think and worry about it.  [Director] John [Krokidas] was very helpful in furnishing me with a lot of graphic detail of what I would be experiencing at the various stages. We were able to hang out a little bit on set and get to know each other a little bit, which I think is important when you’re doing a scene so intimate.  You have to feel like you’re both in it together.”

My Girls Take Halloween Seriously

Halloween can be a spooky, fun time for parties or trick-or-treating.  This will be my fourth Halloween with Miss Gretel.  This year she is a gory version of Moaning Myrtle from the “Harry Potter” series.

Moaning Myrtle

Before I get to Gretel’s most recent Halloweens with Miss ABBA, check out these two adorable pictures from Halloween 2002 and 2003 of Gretel as a 1-year-old and a 2-year-old.

In 2009, our first Halloween together, Gretel was a “Vampire Bride”.

And, that same year, Miss ABBA could very well have been a “Ghostbuster”.  She “ain’t afraid o’ no ghost”!

In 2010, Gretel was impressed with “Avatar” and decided she was going to be one of the Na’vi, the blue people.

Last Halloween, since we knew that it was likely going to be Miss ABBA’s last, I decided to dress her up and go trick-or-treating, too.  So, she went as a lobotomy patient, complete with a rubber brain, blood, and gauze.  (You just can’t see the brain and it did slip some from its original placement!)

And, Miss ABBA even scored her own fun-sized “3 Musketeers” bar that she pretty much enjoyed by herself.  Okay, I took a small bite since I didn’t get one. 🙂

October 2011 was also a very mild one and Miss ABBA sat outside a lot.  We even had a dress-up day with my Lady Gaga wig from the previous year.  That day, much to her chagrin, Miss ABBA became “ABBA Gaga”.  The look on her face is priceless.  It’s like, “Dad, people are going to see me looking like this!”

Last year, Gretel went as Hermione Granger, again, from the “Harry Potter” series.

Last Saturday night, she went to a Halloween party at her friend, Zoe’s, and she was inspired by the movie, “Rock of Ages” and went as a rocker.  Rock On!

In memory of Miss ABBA, one of my friends, Mary Baltikauski Nielsen, in Spring Valley, Illinois, made this cute pumpkin this Halloween.

And, I can’t leave out my sister, Tammy.  In 1996, she sent me this picture of her at Halloween.

Happy Halloween!
