Random Friday Thoughts — November 22, 2013

The weekend before Thanksgiving is here and we have a little light snow in the Quad Cities!  While I have a couple of events to attend and one to emcee, I want to start decorating inside!  Whatever plans you have this weekend, I hope you have a good one.  Here are my random thoughts for this week.

TORNADO AFTERMATH

My heart goes out to the victims of last Sunday’s tornadoes in Illinois.  There were 119 reported tornadoes mostly in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan.  (Tornadoes were also reported in Missouri, Ohio, and Tennessee.)

Washington Illinois

Washington Illinois

Those are images of the devastation in Washington, Illinois, about 100 miles southeast of the Quad Cities, near Peoria.  Winds in that EF-4 tornado, that killed one man and injured 122 others, were determined to be around 190 miles-per-hour.

At least eight people died in the twisters, six in Illinois and two in Michigan.

THE WORLD CHANGED (AGAIN) 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

On November 22, 1963, Americans woke up and the Vietnam conflict was still raging on.  In Fort Worth, Texas, light rain was falling.

Later that day, the world would be shocked and saddened as President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas.  Since then, there have been many books and movies that cover this tragic event.

parkland

“Parkland”, a little seen fall movie co-produced by actor Tom Hanks, is the latest.  While it covers the Kennedy shooting, it focuses more on what happened when the President and his shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald, were both taken to Parkland Hospital, where they both died two days apart.

While only grossing about $650,000 in its limited theatrical run, the all-star movie features Zac Efron in a very mature role as Dr. Jim Carrico, the first doctor that attended to the ill-fated president.  The also stars Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden and Oscar nominees Paul Giamatti, Jackie Earle Haley, Billy Bob Thornton, and Jacki Weaver.

The movie is compelling and it doesn’t come across as a boring history recap.  It does feature some good-looking men, great 1960’s hair and decor, but a lot of blood.

THANKSGIVING INVITATION

If you’re looking for somewhere to spend Thanksgiving, to volunteer and serve food, or if you want to make food to serve those in need, feel free to help out my very dear and open-minded friends, Constance and Erin, and their church.  Here are the details.

JOAN JETT’S FLOAT FOR THE THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE

Rocker Joan Jett will be performing at next week’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  However, she’ll be changing floats because she’s a vegetarian!

Macys-Parade

She’ll no longer be performing on the South Dakota float.  The state’s Cattleman’s Association issued this statement, “When we learned that about Miss Jett, we were rightly concerned about her representing South Dakota and a state that is so heavily reliant on agriculture and livestock production to drive our economy.”

Joan Jett

Jett says, “I’ve decided to switch from South Dakota to another float because people’s political agendas were getting in the way of what should be a purely entertainment driven event.  I will remain focused on entertaining the millions of people watching, who will be celebrating a great American tradition.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Holiday Workout Madness Mental Institution

“AMERICAN HORROR STORY:  ASYLUM”

I know that millions of you are spending time with the witches in “Coven”, but Ray and I just got out of the “Asylum”.

While I loved the first season, “American Horror Story:  Murder House” with crazy Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange) and the strangely sexy, “Rubber Man”, the 13 episode, ten-hour second season, “Asylum”, was an emotional roller coaster ride of sadistic depravity, murder, sex, gore, and religion that I didn’t want to end.

American Horror Story Asylum

Although I just finished watching it, I want to go back and watch seasons one and two again!

In season one, it was easy to choose my favorite characters: Constance (Lange), her son, Tate (Evan Peters), her daughter, Addie (Jamie Brewer), and Chad (Zachary Quinto) and his lover, Patrick (Teddy Sears).  However, in season two, it’s impossible.

Sarah Paulson, who had a minor role in the first season, has plenty of scenery to chew on in the new installment.  She plays, Lana Winters, a lesbian reporter, in 1964, visiting Briarcliff Mental Institution to get an exclusive story on serial killer, “Bloody Face”.  Well, needless to say, and this isn’t a spoiler, Sister Jude (Lange) gets Lana institutionalized!

Sarah PaulsonJessica

Each returning actor plays a different character in each new season of “American Horror Story” and from the picture above of Sister Jude, you realize that some things change very quickly and there’s a reason why she doesn’t look very religious there.

What I love about the second season is that just when you think friendships are formed, things are not as they seem.  Each character doesn’t know who to trust!

zachary-quinto

Zachary Quinto was fantastic and creepy as Dr. Oliver Thredson and it was great to see Joseph Fiennes again, as Monsignor Timothy Howard.  While a man of the cloth, he does have some stimulating, partially clothed scenes and he has been working out! 🙂  (Totally non-related to this blog, but his full name is Joseph Twisleton Wykeham Fiennes.  Isn’t that a cool name?)

Joseph-Fiennes-American-Horror-Story

And, my final standout performance and character was the once meek Sister Mary Eunice.

Lily Rabe

Lily Rabe, the daughter of the late actress Jill Clayburgh, was incredible as her Mary Eunice transformed during the season.

While all of the episodes were spectacular, I think my favorite was “Unholy Night”.  You’ll never look at Christmas the same way again!

Unholy Night

Between mental illness, a serial killer named “Bloody Face”, Nazis, aliens, and medical experiments gone awry, let’s just hope that you never have to visit a facility like Briarcliff, unless it’s sitting on your couch.

“SEXIEST MAN ALIVE”

Adam Levine is a very busy man.  He’s still recording music with Maroon 5, coaching singers on “The Voice”, and he was a guest on “American Horror Story:  Asylum”.

He now has another honor and accomplishment.  “People” magazine just named him this year’s “Sexiest Man Alive”!

adam-levine-tattoos

You mean that qualifies as sexy?  Don’t answer that, it’s a rhetorical question.  And, if want an answer, say it like they do in the South, “hell yea”!

THIS IS WAY TO JINGLE BELLS!

K-Mart is ready for the holiday season and wants us to pay attention.  You have my attention and ’tis the season!

MOVIES THAT ARE TOO UPSETTING

“Entertainment Weekly” recently highlighted “8 Great Movies Too Upsetting To See Twice”.  Of those listed, I saw “United 93” several times.  It’s about one of the hijacked planes from 9-11 that was headed toward Washington D.C. when it crashed into a Pennsylvania field.

Some of the others listed were “Requiem for a Dream” (2000) and “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995).

Boys Don't Cry

I have one that “EW” left out.  I was blown away back in 2000 with Hilary Swank’s Oscar-winning performance in “Boys Don’t Cry”.  After seeing the movie, my sister bought me the VHS copy, which I haven’t opened nearly a decade later.  I’m sure I’ll watch it again, but not yet.

The movie is based on a true story.  Swank plays Brandon Teena, a Nebraska trans man, who was born a woman, but lived as a man.  Brandon was raped and killed by men from the small town when they found out.

“THE PURGE”

In this summer psychological thriller, it’s 2022 and crime and unemployment rates are at all-time low.  It’s because the government has instituted a 12-hour period once a year where all criminal activity, including murder, is legal.

While many are out for blood on this night, home security salesman James Sandin (Ethan Hawke), his wife, Mary (Lena Headey) and their two children are locked away in their home waiting out the 12-hour “purge”.

However, their son, Charlie, notices an injured man begging for help to get away from a group of masked criminals and he lets the man in.

The Purge Masks

The masked criminals are definitely creepy and add some life to an otherwise lifeless movie.  Needless to say, the masked group gets into the Sandin home, but what are neighbors for, if only to come in and save the day!  Or, do they do?

The $3 million dollar movie went on to gross $89.3 million and a sequel is in the works.

CHENEY PUBLIC DISPUTE

It might be an interesting Thanksgiving at the Dick & Lynne Cheney household if all of the family gets together.

Liz Cheney

After their daughter, Liz, who’s running for political office in Wyoming reiterated her views on marriage equality (she told “Fox News Sunday” that she supports “the traditional definition of marriage”), her lesbian sister, Mary, blasted her on Facebook.

Mary wrote, “Liz — this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree you’re just wrong — and on the wrong side of history.”

Mary Cheney, Heather Poe

Mary’s wife, Heather Poe (left in above picture), also commented, “I can’t help but wonder how Liz would feel if as she moved from state to state, she discovered that her family was protected in one but not the other.  Yes, Liz, in fifteen states and the District of Columbia you are my sister-in-law.”

Here is the part that irritates me.  Mom and Dad Cheney and Liz all say that Liz loves her younger sister and her family (Mary and Heather have two children).  However, how can you say that and know that having those anti-marriage equality views denies every married LGBT couple countless benefits from the federal government and in 35 states!

Go Team Mary & Heather!

PICK HIT

Winning Grammy Awards and having international success doesn’t always make singers a household name in America.

Outside of the Latin music charts where she’s scored 16 hits in the U.S., most Americans probably don’t know Italian singer Laura Pausini.  She did score two #1 Billboard dance hits in 2003 from her English debut album, which is incredible.  Check out “Surrender” on YouTube.

Laura Pausini

In Italy, Pausini has scored 25 Top 40 hits.  Of those, 16 reached the Top Ten and six topped the chart.

She has sold around 70 million albums, singles, and DVDs worldwide.  For the first release, Limpido”, from “20 – The Greatest Hits”, which has is her latest #1 in Italy, Laura has teamed up with another international superstar with only modest success here in the U.S.

Kylie Minogue

Like Laura, Kylie has sold about 70 million records worldwide.  In the U.S., she’s had 5 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with two reaching the Top Ten.  However, in the U.K, Kylie has scored 49 Top 40 hits with 35 of them reaching the Top Ten, and 8 topped the charts!

This is their recent collaboration and I really hope I get to see them both in concert in 2014.

PEEPS’ ’80s FRIDAY FLASHBACK

The English band, Haircut 100 only reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 one time.

““Love Plus One” only reached #37 in 1982.  Although that makes them a “one hit wonder”, it’s still one of my favorite songs of that decade.  The song did reach #8 on the Dance/Club Play chart.

It’s also featured in one of my favorite coming-of-age movies, “Edge of Seventeen”, from 1998.

CHRISTMAS SONG KICK-OFF

Okay, technically I’ve already featured videos from Kelly Clarkson and Erasure letting you know how much I love their new Christmas albums.  But, beginning this week and running through Christmas, I’ll feature one of my favorite holiday videos.

It’s from Janice Dickinson, one of the most successful models of the 1970s and 1980s and the self-described first “supermodel”.  She now runs a talent agency.

This is one that I watch multiple times each holiday season and I smile and laugh each time.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

I hope you enjoyed this week’s random thoughts as much as I love thinking about, researching, and writing them each week.  Let me know what you agree with and what you may not agree on.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Another Beautiful Golden Crosses The “Rainbow Bridge”

It’s now been a year since Miss ABBA crossed the “Rainbow Bridge” went to “puppy heaven”.  There isn’t a day that passes that I don’t think of her a thousand times a day.  However, time heals all heartache.  Now when I think of her, I smile and I think of her goofiness, her unconditional love, and those warm, greeting eyes, that smiling face, and her wagging tail.

I have many friends that have dealt with that same pain before and after Miss ABBA’s passing.  I know how you feel and I hope you smile now when you think of your four-legged baby that is now with Miss ABBA.

They all have a new friend to play with in heaven.

It appears that “Frankie”, Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine’s golden retriever crossed the “Rainbow Bridge” Thursday.

While Adam hasn’t made a public statement about his loss, the news is widespread on Frankie’s Facebook page and Twitter account.  Yes, the golden has both.  The life of a celebrity golden! 🙂

Adam Levine and Frankie

Frankie, you were a beautiful girl on Earth and will be a sweet addition in heaven.  Say hello to Miss ABBA for me.

Frankie Levine

Seeing the pictures of Adam and Frankie warms my heart and to know that he got a tattoo (one of many on his beautiful body) of a paw print that has “Frankie Girl” under it was so touching..

Frankie Tattoo

It inspired me to get one of ABBA last spring after she left us.

And, Adam even wrote and recorded “Won’t Go Home Without You”, one of their radio hits from the “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” album, about Frankie.

Adam Levine Singing

Here are some of the lyrics about Frankie:

“I asked her to stay but she wouldn’t listen/She left before I had the chance to say”, “The taste of your breath, I’ll never get over/The noises that she made kept me awake”, and “Every night you cry yourself to sleep/Thinking “Why does this happen to me?/Why does every moment have to be so hard?”/Hard to believe that”

Frankie, have a blast with Miss ABBA and all those beautiful creatures that went before you.

Adam, my heart goes out to you at this difficult time.

They Said What??? Football Players, Ed Koch, & Prince

SUPER BOWL CHAMPS BALTIMORE RAVENS’ TERRELL SUGGS

“On this team, with so many different personalities, we just accept people for who they are we don’t really care too much about a player’s sexuality.”

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS CHRIS CULLIVER

“I don’t do the gay guys man.  I don’t do that. No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.  Can’t be with that sweet stuff.  Nah…can’t be…in the locker room man. Nah.”

FORMER NEW YORK CITY MAYOR ED KOCH

(who died last Friday):  “Whether I am straight or gay or bisexual is nobody’s business but mine.”

MORE KOCH

“I do not want to add to the acceptability of asking every candidate, ‘Are you straight or gay or lesbian?’ and make it a legitimate question, so I don’t submit to that question. I don’t care if people think I’m gay because I don’t answer it. I’m flattered that at 84 people are interested in my sex life — and, it’s quite limited.”

PETE TOWNSHEND OF THE WHO

“The machinery of making music means more people can do it now. The technology has made it easier to make music without being profoundly gifted.  What Lady Gaga has done is created an iconic figure who is someone we can get inside. She’s a story and it’s fascinating to watch – she’s like a space oddity.”

POP ICON PRINCE

(about Madonna and his decision to leave Warner Bros. records):  “She was getting paid, but at the same time we were selling more records and selling out concerts on multiple nights.”

MORE PRINCE

(on Maroon 5’s cover of “Kiss” on their “Overexposed” album):  “I do pay performance royalties on others’ songs I perform live, but I’m not recording these songs and putting them up for sale.  Why do we need to hear another cover of a song someone else did?”

Those are my Top Ten viewed blogs since I started my blog January 7, 2012.

I have to admit that my favorites on this list are #2 “Do We Really Need To Tell Adele She’s “Too Fat”? about weight and my eating disorder, #6 “When One Door Closes, Another One Opens” about losing my job, and from yesterday’s countdown from #20 to #11, “ABBA:  My Best Friend” at #15, “Marriage Expert Bristol Palin Weighs In On Marriage Equality” at #16, “Marriage Equality:  Is It Simply Black & White” at #17, “Have Your Reception Here Unless You’re Gay” at #19 (which was featured on the Facebook page of “Instinct”, a leading gay magazine), and “President Reagan, I No Longer Hate You” at #20.

Here’s yesterday’s recap of #20 to #11.

Most Popular Blog Entries In My First Year — Part One

Throughout 2013, on the one year anniversary of some of my favorite 2012 blogs, I’ll highlight them again.  There are some that didn’t make the year-end recap that I’m proud of and want to share again, in case you missed them.

Have a great weekend.

They Said What??? Newt Gingrich, Adam Levine, & Mike Tyson

FORMER REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE NEWT GINGRICH

(about his party’s chances if Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ran for president in 2016):  “The Republican party is incapable of competing at that level.  First of all, she’s very formidable as a person.  She’s a very competent person. She’s married to the most popular Democrat in the country; they both think [it] would be good for her to be president. It makes it virtually impossible to stop her for the nomination.”

TALK SHOW HOST WENDY WILLIAMS

“I am a Beyonce fan. I’m gonna watch her upcoming documentary, because fortunately one of the TVs in our kitchen has closed captioning, so I’ll be able to understand what she says.  You know Beyonce can’t talk. She sounds like she has a fifth grade education.”

ARIZONA’S CLUELESS GOVERNOR JAN BREWER

(responding to a question about global warming and whether it’s man-made):  “Everybody has an opinion on it and I probably don’t think it’s man-made.  I believe, you know, that weather’s elements are controlled by different things.”

MORE BREWER

(she walks away and then walks back to the reporter):  “Where the hell did that come from?”  (Note:  Brewer had an upcoming speaking engagement about energy at the Western Governor’s Association Conference and climate change is on the agenda).

EX-BOXER MIKE TYSON

(about his ex-wife, Robin Givens and Brad Pitt):  “I was doing a divorce but I/we [had sex] every day before I would go to my lawyer’s office to say she’s a pig and stealing. I would go to … [Givens’] house to have sex with her. This particular day, someone beat me to the punch. And I guess Brad got there earlier than I did.”

SCOOTER BRAUN, JUSTIN BIEBER’S MANAGER

(tweeting about Justin getting snubbed in the Grammy nominations): “I just plain DISAGREE.  The kid deserved it. Grammy board u blew it on this one.”

SINGER JACK WHITE

(about Lady Gaga):  “I don’t think she lives it, because it’s all artifice.  It’s all image with no meaning behind it. You can’t sink your teeth into it. It’s a sound bite. It’s very of this age, because that’s what people want.”

MORE JACK WHITE

(responding to “NME” adding “Lady Gaga’s music” into his quote):  “I never said anything about her music, or questioned the authenticity of her songs in any way. I was in a conversation about the drawbacks of image for the sake of image, and that it is popular nowadays to not question an image in front of you, but only to label it as ‘cool’ or ‘weird’ quickly and dispose of it.  I don’t like my comments about Lady Gaga’s presentation being changed into some sort of negative critique of her music. If you’re going to try to cause drama, at least get the quotes right. I think journalists should also be held accountable for what they say. Especially publications like the NME who put whatever words they feel like between two quotation marks and play it off as a quote. ”

APPLE CEO TIM COOK

(who has faced criticism from some wanting him to talk more openly about being gay):  “For years I had the privilege of being anonymous.  There is a great privilege in that if you’re a private person. So it’s a bit different.”

MAROON 5 LEAD SINGER ADAM LEVINE

(to “GQ” magazine): “Seriously, Honey Boo Boo is the decay of Western civilization.  Just because so many people watch the show doesn’t mean it’s good. So many people witness atrocities and can’t take their eyes away from them, but that doesn’t mean they’re good. That show is literally The. Worst. Thing. That’s. Ever. Happened. It’s complete f***ing ignorance and the most despicable way to treat your kids. F**k those people. You can put that in the magazine: F**k those idiots. They’re just the worst. Sorry, I’m so sensitive to that—like, I don’t know, man, it’s upsetting. Just to clarify, I said, ‘F**K THOSE PEOPLE.'”

They Said What??? Adam Levine, Courtney Love, Hateful Pastors & Hateful Business Owners

NEW YORK REPUBLICAN U.S. REPRESENTATIVE RICHARD HANNA

“I have to say that I’m frustrated by how much we — I mean the Republican Party — are willing to give deferential treatment to our extremes in this moment in history.”  “We render ourselves incapable of governing when all we do is take severe sides…”  “If all people do is go down there and join a team, and the team is invested in winning and you have something that looks very similar to the shirts and the skins, there’s not a lot of value there.”

REV. BILL OWENS, PRESIDENT OF THE COALITION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN PASTORS

“The time has come for a broad-based assault against the powers that be that want to change our culture to one of men marrying men and women marrying women. […] For the president to bow to the money as Judas did for Jesus Christ is a disgrace and we are ashamed […] Another very important point I think that needs to be made is if you watch the men who have been caught having sex with little boys, you will note that all of them will say that “I was molested as a child — a man molested me in my home,” wherever. They will say they were molested. And for the president to condone this type of thing knowing the full facts is just irresponsible.”

MAROON 5 SINGER ADAM LEVINE AND “THE VOICE” CO-HOST ADAM LEVINE

(tweeting about singer Carly Rae Jepson “Call Me Maybe”):  “Why does she want him to call her Maybe?  Carly is a lovely name.”

JACK PHILLIPS, OWNER OF MASTERPIECE CAKE SHOP IN LAKEWOOD, COLORADO

“If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations, or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever. It’s just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle. We would close down that bakery before we closed our beliefs, so that may be what it comes to … we’ll see.”

CAROLE MOORE, WHITEBRIAR BED & BREAKFAST IN EDGEWATER PARK, NEW JERSEY

(on Facebook):  “where is the role model that your son needs to know how to act like a man? or will he only see the “one sided selfishness” of a “single parent”…and end up an out cast in society by being “gay” himself because he didn’t have a father as a role model. I’ll pray for you….remember what the bible says: “Lay down with dogs, get up with fleas”…..guess that’s why God invented aids….THIS LOCAL BUSINESS WILL BE ONE MAN ONE WOMAN ONE GOD MAKES MARRIAGE….AND PROUD TO DO SO….YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY TO OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS”

SINGER CHRIS BROWN

(tweeting about reports of his homophobic comment last week toward R&B singer Frank Ocean):  “My Opinion on the whole Frank Ocean subject is ……… Love who u wanna love.  It’s ur decision. People stop searching for BS…Everyone is so quick to point  the wrong fingers at each other! Ask urself… Am I Doing everything I can to  help the world ????…The world is so bent on social acceptance that we’ve  forgotten what makes us special… Our individuality.”

FAILED PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE MICHELE BACHMANN

“We are standing with the Cathys. Standing with the family. Thank you, Chick-fil-A. I’m happy to stand with you.”

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH PASTOR ROBERT JEFFRESS IN DALLAS, TEXAS

(in the past, he’s also said that Mormonism is a cult and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not a Christian): “Amazingly, some gay activists don’t even try to hide the link between homosexuality and pedophilia. There are some who are right now are actively involved in trying to legalize sex between adults and children by lowering the age of consent or removing it altogether.  In all fairness, it would be wrong to suggest that all homosexuals to pedophiles, it would be wrong to even suggest that a majority of homosexuals are pedophiles, but the truth nevertheless is there. There are a disproportionate amount of assaults against children by homosexuals than by heterosexuals, you can’t deny that, and the reason is very clear: homosexuality is perverse, it represents a degradation of a person’s mind and if a person will sink that low and there are no restraints from God’s law, then there is no telling to whatever sins he will commit as well.”

REGAL CINEMAS

(after a man was arrested at a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Miami Beach, Florida, after acting strange and allegedly yelling, “this is it”):  “There was a disturbance in a theatre at approximately midnight in South Beach. Regal takes the matter very seriously, accordingly we are working closely with local police. All information at this time should come from the authorities, as we would not want to interfere with their investigation. Regal, our employees and security personnel remain alert and engaged. Our number one priority continues to be the safety and security of guests and employees.”

HOLE SINGER COURTNEY LOVE

(tweeting singer Lana Del Rey about Del Ray performing Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box”): “You do know the song is about my Vagina right? ‘Throw down your umbilical noose so i can climb right back,’ umm.  On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you? lol xc.  “You are gorgeous and very talented, it was all in good humor love, it is true however bwahaa xc”
