Random Friday Thoughts — November 18, 2016

It’s Friday and the weekend is almost here.

In the Quad Cities, the Christmas holiday season officially kicks off with the “Festival of Trees” in Davenport, complete with a parade, and “Lighting on the Commons” in downtown Moline.

It’s been a trying period post-election for winners and losers.  I hope that we all find some peace and common ground soon.

Thank you for checking out my thoughts.  I welcome yours and if we disagree, do it diplomatically.

“HALLELUJAH”

This touching performance from “Saturday Night Live” and Kate McKinnon made me smile a little more this week.

HOLLY DUNN PASSES ON

Back in September, I wrote about country music singer Holly Dunn and her fight against a “rare and aggressive” ovarian cancer and that her chances of survival were bleak.

Earlier this week, Holly succumbed to the disease at the age of 59.

If you listened to country music in the late 1980s, you definitely heard her music.  Dunn’s breakthrough hit, in 1986, was the Top Ten smash, “Daddy’s Hands”.

She scored a total of thirteen country hits with nine of them reaching the Top Ten.

“Are You Ever Gonna Love Me” topped the chart in 1989 and in memory of Holly, here’s her other #1 hit from 1990, “You Really Had Me Going”.

Thinking of you, Holly.

I’M READY FOR A “SLUMBER PARTY”

The latest singles from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears received only lukewarm responses from Top 40 radio.

To be honest, while “Perfect Illusion” (Gaga), “Rise” (Perry), and “Make Me (Ooh)” were okay songs, none of them represented the best or what was expected of the superstars that released them.

As Christmas songs start popping up on radio, I’m really hoping radio takes a chance on the second single from Britney Spears’ “Glory” album, “Slumber Party”, a new remix featuring Tinashe, a 23-year-old Kentucky-born singer and songwriter.  Go Wildcats!

Glory BS

If you’re familiar with my blog, you know I love Britney.

She’s had some moderate success at radio over the past five years, but most of the songs were misses rather than hits.

“Femme Fatale” from 2011 was my favorite album of that year and featured some of the biggest songs of Brit’s career, “Hold It Against Me”, “Till The World Ends”, and “I Wanna Go”.

Britney-Spears-Femme-Fatale

“Glory”, the new album, is equally phenomenal and the remix version of “Slumber Party” is different from the album and inviting Tinashe to the party was an excellent idea.

Let’s just say the new video is so hot and sexy, it’ll smolder long after you finish watching it.  It’ll fuel many fantasies — even with gay men (and maybe even a few open-minded straight women)!

American Top 40 radio, add this song now!

“BEAUTY AND THE BEAST”

In just four months, Disney’s live-action remake of its classic, “Beauty and the Beast”, hits theaters.

After a very secretive first trailer last March, a new trailer was released earlier this week.

It was viewed by 127.6 million people in just the first 24 hours breaking the previous record of 114 views in the first 24 hours set by “Fifty Shades Darker”!

“Beauty and the Beast” hits theaters March 17, 2017.

A BEAUTY WITH A DIFFERENT LOOK

When Todrick Hall’s “Britney and the Beast” came out last June, I can’t tell you how many times I watched it.

I guess I wasn’t alone. It’s now been viewed almost 1.8 million times.

THE WEEK OF TRUMP

I said I would accept the fact that more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton (actually, more people vote for Hillary than for any white president in the history of the U.S.), but Donald Trump won the electoral college vote and the presidency.

However, that doesn’t mean I won’t mention interesting developments in the week of Trump!

DT Masks

He’s now accepting of marriage equality (?), wants his kids to have access to “Top Secret” information (? — Trump denies this), Vice President Mike Pence is going to court to keep his emails hidden (wait, wasn’t emails the biggest part of Hillary’s undoing in the public eye?), and Rudy Giuliani ws rumored to be a front runner for Secretary of State (sorry Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell).  Now, it seems that Mitt Romney’s name is floating around for that position.

Stay tuned!

“THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE”

The television buzz last year was all about “Mr. Robot”, which was phenomenal in its first season.

However, my favorite new show last year was Amazon Prime’s “The Man in the High Castle”.

The second season is now less than a month away.

Its premieres December 16th.

“PEOPLE YOU MAY KNOW”

I’m sure there are some great gay movies on the festival scene snow.  However, this year, there weren’t too many that I saw on DVD that really stood out.

“Beautiful Something” was a good one.

Last weekend, I finally got around to watching “People You May Know”, which features a LGBT regular and one of my favorites, Mark Cirillo — a Twitter buddy of mine.

In the movie, Herbert (Cirillo), Joe (Sean Maher) and Delia (Andrea Grano) are BFFs and get together to hang out one Friday night with dinner, wine, and cocaine.

When one of the friends goes to bed, the other two continue to party and that leads to a major plot in the movie.  (And, just because it’s a LGBT film, you might be wrong on which two hook-up).

While I would have liked to have seen more of Herbert as he got to know Nicholas, watching Delia and Joe work through some very complicated circumstances was rewarding.

The cast is amazing and the movie makes you realize just how important friends are in life through the ups and downs.

GRADE:  B

PICK HIT

“Water Under The Bridge” is Adele’s fourth hit release from her “25” album, which has sold 20 million-plus copies worldwide since its release one year ago this week!

Two of the singles, “Hello” and “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” reached #1 on the Billboard Top 40 radio airplay charts and “When We Were Young” just missed out on the Top Ten.

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Random Friday Thoughts — June 10, 2016

We’re moving closer to the official start of summer, but this is going to be the hottest weekend in the Quad Cities since last September.  I’ll definitely be floating in the pool with a cold beverage!

Great response and feedback to last week’s “Random Friday Thoughts”, so let’s jump right into this week’s edition.

WHITNEY HOUSTON RUMOR CONFIRMED (?)

It’s been more than four years since superstar Whitney Houston died, but in his new book, “Every Little Step”, ex-husband Bobby Brown confirms a longstanding rumor about Houston.

As I wrote in a blog in early 2013, there was always speculation that Whitney was in an intimate relationship with her personal assistant, Robyn Crawford.

Whitney Robyn

In that blog, Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston denied it.

However, in his new book, Brown says that Whitney was bisexual and that she and Crawford were in a longtime relationship.

Brown writes, “I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitney’s life, Whitney would still be alive today.” He goes on to say that Whitney didn’t have any close friends after Crawford.

It’s sad to think that if that’s true and she had been accepted for who she was, she might still be with us.

You can read my blog about her mother’s views on Whitney’s sexuality and relationship with Crawford by clicking this link.  (It’ll open in a new window and you won’t lose your place in today’s blog.)

https://anthonypeoples.wordpress.com/2013/01/30/whitney-houstons-mother-her-conditional-love/

One last thing — Bobby Brown, please don’t continue to mine Whitney and Bobbi Kristina’s deaths for your personal financial gain.  Let them R.I.P. after this.

Those 115-thousand-plus Hillary retweets and likes were just in the first hour!

On the other hand, Donald Trump’s comment had 100-thousand less retweets and only 26-thousand likes in the same time period!

Oh Snap!

BERNIE SANDERS, THANK YOU!

While things didn’t work out for Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic race for president and he did get testy and borderline rude toward the end of the primary and caucus season, I commend him on the fight and the awareness of the broken system he brought to this year’s race for the White House.

APTOPIX DEM 2016 Debate

After meeting with President Obama Thursday, Sanders told reporters he would “work as hard as I can to make sure that Donald Trump does not become president of the United States”, which he said would be a “disaster”.

He also said, “I look forward to meeting with (Clinton) in the near future to see how we can work together to defeat Donald Trump and to create a government which represents all of us and not just the 1%.”

Here’s to unity and the political demise of Trump!

PAUL RYAN CALLED DONALD TRUMP WHAT?

House Speaker Paul Ryan (Mitt Romney’s 2012 vice presidential running mate) this week said that 2016 Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump made “a textbook definition of a racist comment” about U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel.

Trump claims that because Curiel is of Mexican heritage he can’t preside over Trump’s case fairly because the likely GOP presidential candidate wants to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

RomneyRyan

But, Ryan still says he’ll be voting for Trump in November.

Nicely played, GOP!

GOODBYE BRETAGNE, YOU BEAUTIFUL GIRL

Bretagne (pronounced “Brittany”), a 16-year-old golden retriever, crossed the “rainbow bridge” earlier this week in Houston, Texas.

bretagne.jpg

She’s the last known surviving canine hero who searched the rubble of “Ground Zero” after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

“The Daily Golden” reports that her owner and handler noticed that Bretagne wasn’t eating (her favorite thing) and she knew something was wrong.

On Monday, members of the Texas Task Force 1 and the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department greeted Bretagne as she entered the veterinarian’s office for the last time.

Goodbye Bretagne.jpg

She was later brought out draped in an American flag while her admirers still stood saluting.

An autopsy is being conducted since the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation is conducting a study of all 9/11 search and rescue dogs.

I don’t often tear up when writing my blogs, but I did with this entry.

GORILLA KILLING FOLLOW-UP

Last week, I talked about the Cincinnati Zoo incident that led to the shooting death of a 17-year-old silverback gorilla after a 3-year-old child crawled into the animal’s exhibit.

Hamilton County prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced earlier this week that no charges would be brought against the little boy’s mother stating she “did not act in any way where she presented this child to some harm. She had three other children with her and turned her back.”

Deters added, “The zoo lost a beautiful animal and one that many people in this area have enjoyed watching for some time.”  But, he continued, “it’s still an animal”.

He stated that zoo officials are “heartsick” and “on so many levels, this is a tragedy.”

TODRICK HALL IS A GENIUS!

If you’re a big YouTuber or an avid “American Idol” fan, you might know 31-year-old singer-dancer-choreographer-actor-director Todrick Hall.

If not, let me share with you a soon to be masterpiece.  Hall blends together two of my favorites into seven minutes of pure bliss — Britney Spears and “Beauty and the Beast”.

So, until Britney drops her new single “Make Me (Oooh)” in July and the album this fall and the live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” arrives in theaters next spring (more on that below), this will be on repeat on my computer.

Classic!

THE PUBLIC RESTROOM DEBATE

Confused over the whole controversy of allowing transgender Americans to use the bathroom of their gender identity and not their sex?

LGBT

If you haven’t been following the story, North Carolina put into place “House Bill 2, the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act” which bans people from using public bathrooms that do not correspond to their biological sex in late March 2016.

The Department of Justice alerted the state’s Governor and the University of North Carolina system that this is a violation of the U.S. Civil Rights Act.

In just the first month after “House Bill 2” was announced, tourism and hospitality took a $77 million hit in investments and visitor spending with cancelled concerts, TV and movie production, and many state and city governments refusing to travel to North Carolina.

THE INCREDIBLE DOLLY PARTON SPEAKS OUT

You don’t have to be a country music fan to think the world of Dolly Parton because of her open-mindedness and honesty.

Dolly

While Dolly didn’t cancel the opening night of her “Pure & Simple Tour” in Greensboro, North Carolina last Friday night, she definitely has something to say about the transgender community and the controversy.

This appeared on CNN Money’s Facebook page last Friday.

Kudos Dolly!

“JUST PEE”

Pop icon Cyndi Lauper, Broadway and movie star Harvey Fierstein, and the cast of Broadway’s “Kinky Boots” have an entertaining and thought-provoking look at the whole bathroom debate with “Just Pee”.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

“THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN”

We’re already six months into the year and I still haven’t gone to the movies yet.  I had planned on seeing “Money Monster”, but that never materialized.

Last year, it was December before Ray and I finally went to the theater and we saw “Krampus”.

This will all change October 7th when “The Girl on the Train” hit multiplexes with Emily Blunt.

The Girl on the Train

If you’re not familiar with it, get on board and read the thriller.

In Paula Hawkins’ 2015 worldwide best seller, “Rachel is an alcoholic, divorced woman who becomes obsessed with a couple she sees on a regular basis from the train she takes into London.  One day, she sees something strange that will trigger a series of events that will have you feverishly turning the pages to see what’s real, what’s not, and what really happened.  It’s a page turner until the end!”  (That’s what I had to say about the book last July.)

Here’s the movie trailer.

After finishing the book last summer, here’s a blog I posted with my dream cast.  Needless to say, Hollywood didn’t listen.  But, I do love Emily Blunt.

A TALE AS OLD AS TIME….

“Beauty and the Beast” is my favorite Disney movie ever!  I absolutely adore Belle!

Beauty-And-The-Beast

I honestly grew up in Kentucky as the male “Belle”.  In Mayfield, where I was born and raised, I felt like Belle in the “poor provincial town” — just waiting to get out there and I’ve been gone 26 years now!

I’ve been very protective of the 1991 “Best Picture” Oscar-nominated original.  I haven’t seen the musical, but I’d like to one day.

When the direct-to-video sequel, “Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas” arrived in 1997, I bought it only because it was Christmas-themed.  It was enjoyable.

Two summers ago, a live-action version of the film was announced for a March 2017 release date starring Emma Watson of the “Harry Potter” series and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”.

I was elated and scared at the the same time.  Now, after seeing the first trailer, I can’t wait until March 17, 2017 arrives!

The trailer has been viewed almost 16 million times already in just over two weeks!

PICK HIT

American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor blasted on the music scene with her chart-topping single, “All About That Bass”.  That song stayed #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and was downloaded more than 9 million times in the U.S. alone!

“Bass” also won two Billboard Music Awards in 2015 and in 2016, Trainor picked up a Grammy Award for “Best New Artist”.

She’s now added three more Top Ten hits on the Hot 100 (“Lips Are Movin”, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” (with John Legend), and “No”).

While I thought her music was cute, I didn’t jump on the “Bass” band wagon.

However, I do like “Marvin Gaye”, a duet with Charlie Puth.

I fell in love with Meghan after her smoking hot performance of her new song on Jimmy Fallon’s show.  I probably wouldn’t have noticed it if she hadn’t fallen off her high heels after the incredible performance.

But, it was the style and class she exhibited when she fell that endeared her to me.  And, the song, “Me Too”, is now one of my favorites.  It’s such a fun “Song of the Year” contender.

“Me Too” is already a Top Ten hit in Australia and Canada and is currently one of the twenty most played songs on American Top 40 radio.

“SONG OF THE SUMMER”

There’s already speculation as to what will be 2016’s “Song of the Summer” (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Justin Timberlake’s “Trolls” movie song, “Can’t Stop The Feeling!”, is a front-runner.

“Billboard” magazine just released its Top Ten songs of each summer dating back to 1985.

Flashing back thirty years to 1986, Madonna had the “Song of the Summer” with “Papa Don’t Preach”.  I remember so well getting ready on Saturday nights and heading out to “Club DV8” jamming to this song.

BEN WHISHAW…JUST BECAUSE

I have nothing new to report on the talented English actor!

Ben_Whishaw

However, if you haven’t checked out the mini-series “London Spy” or the movie, “Lilting”, stop wasting time and do so now!

THAT’S IT

Well, this has been fun and I already have some thoughts for next week.  I didn’t want you to have to read all day!

As always, thank you for checking out my thoughts and I always welcome yours — as long as you’re diplomatic if we disagree.

Until next week, peace, love and understanding!

Random Thoughts 2012 Recap, Part Two

Here’s another round of the random blogs that I posted this summer that covered multiple topics.  To read each random blog, I’ve made it easy so you only have to click on the highlighted title inside the blog.  Have a great Saturday.

June 21, 2012

You Know What I’m Thinking?

In this blog, I talked about classic rock and kitchen renovation, causes of death in the United States, the summer drought and being ready for fall and winter, Olivia Newton-John, my future pick hit from Chris Wallace, and chocolate wine.

July 10, 2012

I’m Thinking About These Things Today (And You May Agree or Disagree)

In this blog,  just ten days before the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater shooting spree, I said “guns don’t kill, people do”.  I know that guns caused the actual deaths, but there was a person behind them.  Sadly, when I wrote this segment of the blog, I referenced the Tucson, Arizona shooting and I had no idea of what would happen later in the month.  And, now we have the fresh, sad memories of the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting.  You might find the reading interesting and I welcome your feedback.

I also referenced work and seniority, which is another ill-fated topic since I’m no longer there.

There were also random thoughts about Hank Williams Jr. calling President Obama “Hitler”, food, the remake of “Steel Magnolias”, Carrie Underwood, and the music of Laura Pausini.

August 7, 2012

My Wandering Mind — Here’s What I’m Thinking About

The heavy topic on my mind here was about returning soldiers and the demons they face, which leads to more suicides.  I also touched on human rights.  On a lighter note, I had random thoughts about “Dexter”, fall, food, “Zero Dark Thirty”, “Artpop”, Lady Gaga, “The Paperboy”, “Lebanon”, and the music of Demi Lovato.

August 26, 2012

Oh No, He’s Thinking About Random Things

Topics here:  nuclear power plants, healthy eating and cheesecake, bigotry, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, fall, Thomas Roberts’ upcoming marriage, hot new music from Zedd and Madonna, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and “Argo”.

One more coming tomorrow.

They Said What??? Stevie Wonder, Rahm Emanuel, Mitt Romney, & Bobby Jindal

SINGER STEVIE WONDER

(performing at the “American Music Awards” to remember Dick Clark with a special message to the world):  “I just remember his friendship, his kindness and I remember his love for music and love for people.  I challenge you, you as communicators, leaders, politicians, spiritual leaders, put your love first as we musicians put our music and songs first, and unite the world. And then we can be jamming ’til the break of dawn!”

OPENLY GAY “LINCOLN” SCREENWRITER TONY KUSHNER

“I don’t feel that there was any evidence at this particular moment that Lincoln was having sex with anybody.  He seems to have not slept and taken no time off during this period.  I don’t say in my movie whether the Lincoln character was gay or straight. You can ask Daniel what he was playing, but it did not seem to me a thing to make a movie about now…..  I personally believe that there is some reason to speculate that Lincoln might have been bisexual or gay.”

WXIX-TV (CINCINNATI, OHIO) ANCHOR TRICIA MACKE

(after a personal Facebook post calling MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow “an angry young man”): “I apologize to Ms. Maddow and any others who may have been offended by my comments, as they do not reflect my firm beliefs in individual and equal rights, and they certainly did not represent the opinions or position of my employer WXIX-TV.”

KEVIN CLASH, PUPPETEER AND VOICE OF ELMO FROM “SESAME STREET”

(a man accused him of having sexual relations with him when he was only 16 and recanted the story):  “I am a gay man.  I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter. I had a relationship with the accuser. It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was. I am taking a break from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false and defamatory allegation.”

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL WANNABE AND LOSER MITT ROMNEY

“What the president, president’s campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote.”

REPUBLICAN LOUISIANA GOVERNOR BOBBY JINDAL

(shooting back at presidential loser Mitt Romney):  “I absolutely reject that notion. I think that’s absolutely wrong.  I don’t think that represents where we are as a party and where we’re going as a party.  That has got to be one of the most fundamental takeaways from this election.”

CHICAGO MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL

(about Illinois offering marriage equality instead of just civil unions):  “The time is right, the time is now.  Today, we must take the next step on that journey by affording the opportunity to marry to all Americans — and we can continue that march by quickly enacting marriage equality here in Illinois.”

My Early November Random Thoughts

Happy November!  Are you gearing up for the holidays?  Which is your favorite?  Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve?  It’s been a while since I just blogged just about random things that go through my mind, so here goes….

POOR NEW YORK

When Hurricane Sandy slammed onto the New Jersey shores October 29th, it didn’t wash away the cast of the MTV show, “Jersey Shore”.  I’m kidding!  In reality, we saw all of the horrible images of the flooding, the wind damage, and the heavy snow across the East Coast.

And, of course, there were many fake pictures surfacing.  However, none of the pictures captured the magnitude of “The Perfect Storm” like this one.  Who knew they had so much to deal with?  The media (well, except Fox News) just doesn’t show you everything. 🙂

ELECTIONS ARE BEHIND US — FINAL THOUGHTS

Can you believe that 2012 is almost over and that the election is behind us?  Congratulations President Obama on getting four more years!  Now get more things done this time, so those that say you haven’t done enough can zip it!  And, it’ll set the stage for a Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential bid!

And, entertainment icon Cher can breathe a sigh of relief and continue prepping for her much delayed new album and tour.  From this past tweet, you know she’s happy that President Obama was re-elected!

LAST ELECTION COMMENT

With a record number of people voting early across the United States, maybe we should make it mandatory that all Floridians vote early.

As we know, the 2000 election came down to Florida.  And, several days after the 2012 election, Florida was still the only state that had not declared a winner although it’s pretty much a win for President Obama, who leads by about 51,000 votes.  (Actress Roseanne Barr got 8,000+ votes in the Sunshine State!)

I really haven’t looked into why it took so long and it really doesn’t matter this election, but seriously there is a problem with that state and its election board counting votes!

TOP SELLING ARTISTS IN ENGLISH MUSIC HISTORY

The “UK Official Singles Chart” is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and the top-selling male singles’ artist is Elvis Presley with sales of more than 21.6 million.

He’s followed by Cliff Richard, Michael Jackson, and Elton John.

The runner-ups for top-selling female artist are Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Whitney Houston, and Lady Gaga.  They all trail the top-selling female artist for the past 60 years with singles’ sales of 17.8 million — Madonna.

Overall, of all singles artists, Michael Jackson is fifth, Madonna is in fourth place, Cliff Richard is in third, Elvis is second, and the top-selling singles’ artist in U.K. history is the Beatles with sales at 21.9 million!  Are you shocked?

BARBIE PULLS A “DEXTER”

I know that Halloween is over and we should be thinking happy thoughts and not morbid ones, but this is too good to pass up since I didn’t do a “this & that” blog in October.

So, in that vein, here’s to Thanksgiving.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD?

I just read an article about the existence of God and according to the May 2011 Gallup poll, 92% of Americans believe in God.  That is the lowest number of believers since Gallup started asking this question in 1944.  In August 1967, 98% of Americans believed in God.

More women believe in God than men and the age group that had the least belief in God (84%) was the 18 to 29-year-olds.

The South (96%) had the most believers, while the East (86%) had the least.  That doesn’t surprise me, nor does this statistic from that 2011 Gallup poll.  By political party affiliation:  98% of Republicans, 90% of Democrats and 89% of Independents believe in God.

ANOTHER UNRELATED THOUGHT ABOUT GOD

I promise that I have no agenda against God, but I saved this on my computer one day from Facebook and I just came across it and since I’m doing random thoughts, it would be a perfect time to share it.

CHRISTMAS CARDS

I love sending out Christmas cards and this year instead of sending out my typical store-bought boxed cards, I ordered personal photo cards.

Do you still send them out?  This is basically the only time that I use the USPS and I might not be alone.  In 2000, there were 55.1 billion stamped letters mailed.  In 2010, that number had dropped almost in half to 29.8 billion.

Here are the two new stamps for the holidays this from the USPS.

DECORATING FOR CHRISTMAS

While I know that Christmas is still about six weeks away, I’m taking advantage of the warm weather later today to hang lights outside.  As soon as I’m done emceeing a benefit fashion show fundraiser in Davenport, Iowa, I’m coming home to decorate outdoors.  I’d rather do it today when temperatures are around 70 degrees rather than tomorrow when it’s rainy, windy, and much colder!  Yes, that’s my official forecast.

To get you into the holiday spirit or if you just want a laugh, here’s a cute Christmas parody of Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.  (You only have to watch the first two minutes since the last 30-seconds is a commercial!)

“THE NEW ME”

“Malibu Country”, the new ABC Reba comedy is a hit!  It won its time slot on its debut night, November 2, 2012, with almost 9 million viewers.

And, the new song that you can download on iTunes is incredible and I feel as Reba is speaking to me.

In 2013, I’m ready to find “The New Me”.

Happy November, my friends.

Pets Give Presidents A Softer Side

Studies show that people who own pets can live longer and a more enjoyable life.  While my former job was stressful, at times, it’s nothing compared to the weight of the world that the Commander-in-Chief, the President of the United States, carries on his shoulder (and her shoulders, Hillary, I’m talking to you in 2016).

This is Bo, a four-year-old Portuguese Water Dog, the First Dog of the United States, with the Obamas on a stroll.

Bo, I see that you look rather comfy there on the White House lawn.  I hope American voters extend your lease on that property for another four years. 🙂

Bo seems like a rather safe name for a presidential pet.  However, there are a couple of more scandalous or eyebrow-raising names.  How about George Washington’s dog, “Sweet Lips”; John Adam’s dog, “Satan”, and Rutherford B. Hayes’ cat, “Miss Pussy”!

President Washington must have been a hoot because in addition to “Sweet Lips”, he also had coonhounds named, “Drunkard”, “Taster”, “Tipler”, and “Tipsy”.  Do you think he liked his grown-up beverages???

Far from those more scandalous pet names, there are the ones that make you think that some presidents could have used more creativity.  Lyndon Johnson had beagles named “Him” and “Her”!

Long before Republican presidential wannabe Mitt Romney was blasted for putting his dog in a car top carrier 30 years ago on a road trip to Canada, President Lyndon Johnson irritated pet groups across the country for this picture when he lifted “Him”, one of his Beagles, off the ground by his ears!  The protests were more bark than bite since he talked himself out of it — like Romney.

And, Jimmy Carter had a border collie named “Grits”.  You know that he’s from the South!

By far, my favorite presidential pet (and yes, I lack objectivity here) is Liberty, President Gerald Ford’s golden retriever.  Liberty, who was born in February 1974, gave birth to a litter of puppies in the fall of 1975 and the president’s family kept one of them, “Misty”.

I’m sure they’re all up in “puppy heaven” playing with Miss ABBA.

But, President Ford was not the only president that owned a golden retriever.  President Ronald Reagan had a golden named “Victory” and Theodore Roosevelt had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever named “Sailor Boy”.

And, I’m sure somewhere along the line, a president may have had a real “sailor boy”.  Oh, I’m just kidding.  Sorta.

Joking aside, before Miss ABBA, I had Keshia, a chow chow from 1986-1998.  President Calvin Coolidge had two chow chows, “Tiny Tim” and “Blackberry”.

But, not all of the presidential pets were as domesticated and common as dogs and cats.  President Woodrow Wilson kept sheep at the White House to help maintain the lawn.

Thomas Jefferson had two bear cubs.

John Quincy Adams was given an American alligator that lived at the White House for several months and Herbert Hoover’s son had two crocodiles that roamed the lawns.

Abraham Lincoln had a turkey he named “Jack” and John F. Kennedy had a rabbit named “Zsa Zsa”.

However, one of the most eccentric pet owners (or we might as well call him a “zookeeper”) was President Calvin Coolidge.  In addition to the aforementioned chow chows, it’s reported that he had 26 pets including a bear, a bobcat, a donkey, lion cubs, a pygmy hippo, two raccoons (Rebecca & Horace) and a wallaby.

If the Obamas want to push the envelope of pet owning in the White House, may I suggest the “Wild Mekong”?

It’s a psychedelic gecko with bright orange legs, a yellow neck, and a blue-gray body with yellow bars on its bright orange sides.  This creature was recently discovered on an island in southern Vietnam.

Okay, while it isn’t American made, it’s pretty “far out”.

Vote Tuesday!

They Said What??? Mitt Romney, Ann Coulter, Colin Powell, & John McCain

REPUBLICAN INDIANA U.S. SENATE CANDIDATE RICHARD MOURDOCK

“I struggled with myself for a long time but I came to realize life is that gift from God, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape. It is something that God intended to happen.”

2008 FAILED PRESIDENTIAL REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE JOHN McCAIN

(responding about Mourdock’s comment):  “If he apologizes and says he misspoke and he was wrong and asks the people to forgive him, I would be the first.”

CONSERVATIVE MOUTHPIECE ANN COULTER

(tweeted about President Obama after the third presidential debate):  “”I highly approve of Romney’s decision to be kind and gentle to the retard.”

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL WANNABE MITT ROMNEY

(at the third presidential debate):  “I congratulate him on, on taking out Osama bin Laden and going after the leadership in al-Qaeda.  But we can’t kill our way out of this mess.”

(just moments later):  “Well, my strategy is pretty straightforward, which is to go after the bad guys, to make sure we do our very best to interrupt them, to kill them.”

FORMER PANTHER AND JET FOOTBALL STAR KRIS JENKINS

“Some people are afraid, if somebody comes out as openly gay, that it’s going to be the end of football as we know it.  But, football will adapt and grow with it.”

ACTRESS VIVICA A. FOX

(responding to actress Stacey Dash’s endorsement and the way she endorsed Mitt Romney):  “I didn’t know she was a Republican. I will start there.  Second, I don’t know why she had to do a photo shoot in a ‘Baywatch’ red swimsuit with the boobs and the whole flag behind her. And she doesn’t have a job or something to promote right now. I just didn’t get it.”

FORMER REPUBLICAN SECRETARY OF STATE COLIN POWELL

(endorsing President Obama):  “You know, I voted for him in 2008 and I plan to stick with him in 2012, and I’ll be voting for he and Vice President Joe Biden next month.  I think we ought to keep on the track we are on.”
