A Little “Name Dropping” Just For Fun

In life, there are times when we luck out and run into a “celebrity”.  It might be on vacation, at a county or state fair, or just a random encounter.

As a television meteorologist, my job is a public and high profile position (if you’re lucky and people watch the news and your channel!).

That wasn’t the case for me in Salisbury, Maryland.  No one watched my channel and I was never recognized in public in the year-and-a-half there!  However, I was much more well-known in the Quad Cities after 11.5 years and people did recognize me in Panama City, Florida.

I don’t buy into that whole “you’re a celebrity” thing, yet my career has given me better access to some big names in the world of entertainment and politics.

It’s also presented some not so fun moments.

In Lubbock, Texas, I was thrown against a car by an irate man and another time, I was likely urinated on in a crowd of Marilyn Manson fans after his concert while doing my live report (I felt a warm wetness on my leg while talking)!

And, in the Youngstown, Ohio, market, I was first on the scene of a shooting inside a car outside a school and had to look at the body until police covered it.  (At that point, we didn’t know if it was a murder or suicide.)

But, back to the positives.  For today’s blog, I’m “name dropping”!  Some of these people I met through work and some through sheer luck!

I’m going to start off with the three that mean the most to me, so these are not in chronological order of when I met them.

On a cold January morning in 2016 in Davenport, Iowa, I made my way through the crowd and got to say hello to former Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton.

Some people even thought this was photo-shopped and then I point out that her hand is on my shoulder! 🙂

The highlight of my move to Panama City, Florida, was meeting my childhood idol, President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

In July 2017, I got up in the middle of the night and drove almost four hours through the backwoods of Florida, Alabama and Georgia to Plains, Georgia, to hear President Carter give a sermon at his church.

Autograph Carters

After getting back home, I sent the Carters a “70th Anniversary” card with our photo.  I was totally shocked when they sent it back to me — autographed!

I’ve told this story many times, but I’ll tell it again.  As an 12-year-old in Mayfield, Kentucky, in 1976, I got to go into the voting booth with my grandmother and pull the lever for Jimmy Carter.  I did it again in 1980!

In April 2005, I was living in Salisbury, Maryland and working for the ABC affiliate.  We also broadcast the CW network that aired the “Reba” comedy series.

Reba Anthony 2005

To kick off her tour that spring in Virginia Beach, Virginia, we took a bus with twenty viewers to see that cold, windy outdoor show.  Two of those lucky people (and me) got to go backstage and meet Reba.

She was just as you’d imagine her to be — sweet and delightful.  Here are the framed memories of that night.

Reba Art

And, in 2014, I took my first awkward selfie with Shania Twain in Las Vegas, when she walked out into the crowd!

As I name drop the people I’ve been fortunate to meet, I so wished that we had had smartphones earlier than we did.  I could have had photos of the others that I’ve met. 🙂

THE SOS BAND — 1984

In 1984, while a student at Murray State University in western Kentucky, I was doing the nightly weather on the campus television station and I started a music countdown show called “Music Visions”.

The first “celebrity” that I got to meet for the show and in my life was the group, The SOS Band, which was in concert at Murray State.

You might remember them from their #3 Billboard Hot 100 hit, “Take Your Time (Do It Right)”.

LIONEL RICHIE — LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — DECEMBER 2017

I met Lionel before his concert and when I said “Hello” (get it?) and extended my hand, he grabs me and says, “I’m a hugger!”

MADELEINE ALBRIGHT — First Female U. S. Secretary of State (in President Bill Clinton’s administration)

In 1999, while working as a reporter and weathercaster in Youngstown, Ohio, I interviewed Secretary of State Albright.   She was so gracious and kind and, at the time, she was the highest ranking political figure I’d ever met.

I interviewed her about several things, but we focused on Serbian President Slobodan Milošević.

Once I got back to the station, I practiced saying his name over and over so that it’d roll off my tongue easily when I did my live report.

It did. But, then I flubbed an English word that followed next! 🙂

MARTHA LAYNE COLLINS —  MAYFIELD, KENTUCKY — 1983

I met Collins while she was campaigning for her successful bid to become the first (and only) female Kentucky Governor.

LeAnn is so sweet and adorable!

RANDY TRAVIS — RHINELANDER, WISCONSIN — JULY 1996

This was an interesting meeting during Rhinelander’s “Hodag Music Festival” at my first real television job.

It was a little awkward because Randy was so kind and talkative and the whole time, his ex-wife/manager watched us like a hawk!

RHETT AKINS — LUBBOCK, TEXAS — 1997

Rhett and I share the same birthday, even though I’m older.  I interviewed him a school where he was reading to students.

By the way, he’s the father of current country music superstar Thomas Rhett!

Akins scored his first Top 5 hit in 1995 with “That Ain’t My Truck”!

LEE ANN WOMACK — LUBBOCK, TEXAS — 1997

I met Lee Ann as her first two singles were moving up the country charts.  While I love her music and I saw her in concert years later opening for Reba, her demeanor was very short and curt that day.

I was hoping that she was just having a bad day.  However, throughout the years, while talking with others in the business, she must have had many bad days when it came to reporters and interviews!

GARY ALLAN — LUBBOCK, TEXAS — 1997

Not only was Gary dreamy and so kind in the interview early in the day, I saw him at his show that night.

After the show, he told me that got a laugh out of the fact that people stopped him in K-Mart before the show after seeing our interview on the news! 🙂

LONESTAR — LUBBOCK, TEXAS — 1997

Luckily, I interviewed Richie McDonald and Dean Sams and I didn’t have to even see close-minded homophobe John Rich!

TRACY LAWRENCE — LUBBOCK, TEXAS (1997) & DAVENPORT, IOWA (2011)

I first interviewed Tracy when I was working in Lubbock, Texas.  We crossed paths again when I got to introduce him at a concert at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa.

Both times, he was warm and down-to-earth!

DAVID KERSH — LUBBOCK, TEXAS — 1997

David was such a sweet person (and no I didn’t say “Goodnight Sweetheart” to him) and was very grateful for the television exposure.

Sadly, after a string of hits from 1996-1998, he had to take time off in 1999 for vocal strain and left the music business in 2005.

MOLLY SIMS — And, before any of these celebrities I’ve met through my career, I worked at a college textbook company in Murray, Kentucky, for the Sims family.  Their adolescent daughter was always around in the warehouse.

Mary Ann

Now, there are four other singers that I’ve seen in concert a total of ten times, but I’ve never gotten to meet them.

It’ll have to be luck if I ever do!

Random Friday Thoughts — February 8, 2013

Happy Friday. I hope you had a great week and that you are looking forward to the weekend.

My blog this morning is coming to you from Des Moines, Iowa. Ray is speaking at a conference in Kansas City, Missouri Saturday and since my schedule was open, I took advantage of the road trip. He’s also going to Washington D.C. in April and I really want to go, but I plan on being back to work, in some capacity, by then. Here are my random thoughts for today.

SPORTS TALK

Now that the Super Bowl is over and the more gay-friendly Baltimore Ravens won and Beyonce blew out the lights with her dazzling dancing, smiling, and all around sexiness (oh, she did sing some), I’m ready to start following college basketball again just in time for “March Madness”. I guess if there’s any consolation of not being at the station, I won’t lose $5 in the annual basketball brackets contest!

Real life usually prevents me from keeping up with basketball until just before the conference tournaments. And, as I glanced at the AP and USA Today polls, I was shocked to see that neither Kentucky or my alma mater, Murray State, are in the Top 25 until I saw their records.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Here are some of the things on Facebook I saw recently that made me smile or take a second look. One Direction, it’s good to see that most of you guys are close and get along rather well! And, Justin, I really know very little about you, but it was still funny!

NEW MUSIC — MAKE IT OR BREAK IT?

Justin Timberlake has scored 11 Top 40 hits and has been featured on 8 more hits since he started his solo career after ‘N Sync. While I love “Sexy Back”, I really don’t care for “Suit & Tie”, his new song with Jay-Z and the first release from his upcoming album, “The 20/20 Experience”.

I also don’t care for the new Destiny’s Child song, “Nuclear” from their January 29th release, “Love Songs”.

My favorite songs out now are still Chris Wallace’s “Remember When”, which strangely enough was released July 10, 2012, and it’s still slowly gaining popularity. Another song that I still love right now is “C’mon” by Ke$ha, which is approaching the Top Ten!

I bought the album, “Our Version of Events” from Scottish singer Emeli Sande this week. She’s already has six hits from the album in the U.K., where it was released in February 2012! Four of those songs have hit the Top Ten. In addition to her own album hits, she’s been featured on five other Top Ten hits in the U.K. and two of those have topped the charts.

Her new release in the United States is “Next To Me”. It’s already in the Top 20 on the AC chart, it’s been released to Top 40 radio this week.

She already being compared to Adele. What’s really bizarre is that her real first name is, you guessed it, Adele!

TELEVISION THAT I’M STILL LOVING

I’m still waiting for season seven of “Dexter”, the third season of “The Walking Dead” (which returns to AMC this weekend) and the second season of “American Horror Story” to arrive on DVD this summer or fall.

In the meantime, I absolutely love “Elementary” on CBS with the beautiful and sexy Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. It’s the story of Sherlock Holmes and JANE Watson story set in New York City instead of London.

“The Following” on Fox is incredibly addictive and gruesomely creepy awesome.

FollowingPoster

It stars Kevin Bacon as a former FBI agent that captured serial killer Dr. Joe Carroll, a college professor and writer that is obsessed with the writings of Edgar Allen Poe, played by James Purefoy. Carroll escaped from prison in the premiere, but was captured. However, he now has a Charles Manson-like “following”, or cult, that are now carrying on his sadistic brutality.

If you haven’t started “following”, I mean, watching the show, you’ve only missed three episodes and they are available on the Fox website and itunes.

I’m still loving “The New Normal”. Although it won the People’s Choice Award (the real one, not my award) for “Favorite New TV Comedy”, I’m afraid the show may get cancelled since last week’s episode was only watched by 3.1 million people!

“Nashville” on ABC is still on my viewing list on Wednesday night and I’m still barely hanging on to “Malibu Country” on ABC, which stars my idol, Reba. Sorry, Red!

“PEEPS’ ’80S FRIDAY FLASHBACK”

The English trio, The Police, was one of the biggest hit makers in the 1980s. They scored their first hit, “Roxanne”, which peaked at #32, in 1978.

But, in the 1980s, they scored eight more Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with songs from their four Top Ten albums, “Zenyatta Mondatta (1980, double platinum), “Ghost In The Machine” (1981, triple platinum), and their career album, “Synchronicity” (1983, 8 times platinum). In 1986, their greatest hits album “Every Breath You Take: The Singles” reached #7 and went 5 times platinum. Remember, platinum means one million units shipped to stores!

The band’s first Top Ten hit was “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” from 1980. That and their next song, “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da” both peaked at #10. With “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, they moved closer to #1, reached #3.

In 1983, they topped the charts with “Every Breath You Take”, which spent eight weeks at #1.

FACEBOOK FLASHBACK PICTURES

Two years ago, 2/11/2011, we were eating pizza and playing games at Incredible Pizza in Davenport, Iowa. RIP! I guess we were “Wanted”, too, with a reward offering of one million dollars! We must have been bad!

February 10 2011

Three years ago, we were preparing for Valentine’s Day. I made steak and lobster and Miss ABBA was peaking around the corner to make sure I didn’t forget her and if I dropped something. she wanted to be there to pick it up. I also made cherry cookies with melon frosting and melon cookies with cherry frosting to keep it simple. 🙂

Random Thoughts 2012 Recap, Part One

Some events in our lives are random.  And, so are many of our thoughts.  As the one year anniversary of my blog approaches, I looked back and I’ve done more than a dozen random blogs  — blogs that cover many topics instead of just one thing.

And, since some of you have been with me and my blog since the beginning and some have joined throughout the year, I want to share those random thoughts and see what your thoughts are on them.  That way, you don’t have to go through the archives to find them.

All you have to do is click on the underlined title of the random blogs and it’ll open them up.

Las Vegas, South Carolina, A Womanizer, and Murray State

My first random blog covered a fundraiser that I worked on and the great prizes we won in a silent auction, Las Vegas, the South Carolina primary, (yes, election season was getting underway one year ago), and the Murray State Racers basketball team.

Rambling Mind and Random Thoughts

On my mind that day was swimming, diet and exercise, the MDNA tour getting underway, cheesecake, political thoughts, Kylie Minogue, and summer movies that had me excited.

Some of the thoughts you may agree with and some you may not, but we can always talk about them diplomatically.

Have a great rest of the year.
