My 20 Favorite Dixie Chicks Songs

I’ve never met Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, yet I have a connection (okay, two or three).

natalie

When I took my second television job in Lubbock, Texas, (Natalie’s hometown),  in 1997, as a reporter and Saturday anchor at the CBS affiliate, her sister, Kim, was the 10 p.m. weekday producer.  What a sweetheart!

1997 was also the year that Natalie and sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison exploded onto the country music scene with “I Can Love You Better”, which went on to reach #7 on the Billboard Country chart.

dc

Their debut album, “Wide Open Spaces”, has now sold over twelve million copies in the U.S. alone and generated four more Top Ten hits (three of them topped the country charts).

If you’re a fan of the Dixie Chicks, you know they paid the price for being openly honest about then President George W. Bush in 2003 as America moved closer to war with Iraq.

Today’s blog isn’t about that, but I’ll share the blog I wrote about it here:

By the way, here’s another connection I have to Natalie. 🙂  We feel the same way about Donald Trump (GRRRRRR)!

By the way, Martie was also almost born on my birthday, too, five years later on October 12th!

So, happy belated birthday Emily and happy birthday early Martie and Natalie!

Random Friday Thoughts — August 26, 2016

It’s now the last weekend of August.  Where did summer go?

While we still have about four weeks of summer left, Labor Day is fast approaching and, for some, that’s the unofficial end of the summer season.

If you’re ready for fall (and winter), then the first story in my “Random Friday Thoughts” is just for you.

Even if it’s not for you, if you live in the Quad Cities or nearby, please read it and take it to heart.

THE BOY THAT CRIED WOLF

It’s still summer, but we all know that fall is getting closer since our low dropped to 53° this past Monday in the Quad Cities.

While there’s plenty of warm weather left and time for several tropical systems to develop in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, colder weather is spilling in well to our northwest and some long-term computer models even paint a little snow over western Canada by September 1st. 🙂

Sept 1.jpg

This is a perfect time to clarify a couple of things and I’m sure you’ll hear me reiterate this again during the winter months!

We know there are some local forecasters across Iowa and Illinois that cry wolf and dramatize every potential snowflake to get Facebook likes, shares, and blog hits!

Snowflake

That’s not me!  While I love for people to read what I write and comment on it, I’m not going to sensationalize a forecast to get you to watch me or brag about the number of people that click on my page.

With that being said, when you see astronomical snow forecasts a week or so ahead of a potential snow event (which is stupid from a forecasting standpoint), just ignore them!

However, if you insist on looking, don’t make the mistake of asking me about it!  If I think there’s a chance of seeing a decent snow, I’ll definitely be telling you.  But, I will not justify another forecaster’s sensationalism!

Again, I know I’ll have to mention this again this winter.

2016 SUMMER OLYMPICS

I’m so proud of all of the athletes on Team USA that won gold, silver, and bronze medals at the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

rio.jpg

I’m just as happy for those that made the team that didn’t win medals, too.

I didn’t watch the games, but I did follow the medal count as Team USA won more gold and more medals overall than any other team in the world.

All of those performances shined brighter than the adolescent ignorance and shame brought on by gold medalist swimmer Ryan Lochte and his three friends who claimed they were robbed at gunpoint.  Lochte now says his story was “over-exaggerated”.

Speedo Ryan.jpg

SPEEDO FALLOUT

No, there’s no photo of a “wardrobe malfunction” with Lochte and his Speedo.  However, there is fallout from his lies.

Speedo USA ended its sponsorship of him earlier this week.  The company will still donate a portion of his fee ($50,000) to the global charity “Save The Children” in Brazil.

Sppedo Short.jpg

RALPH LAUREN FOLLOWS SPEEDO

The hits against Lochte didn’t stop with Speedo.  Ralph Lauren and two other companies cut ties, too.

The fashion company says, “Ralph  Lauren continues to proudly sponsor the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Team and the values that its athletes embody.”

It added, “Ralph Lauren’s endorsement agreement with Ryan Lochte was specifically in support of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the company will not be renewing his contract.”

Lochte, stuff that in your Speedos!

STILL NOT READY!

The Dixie Chicks debuted on the Billboard County charts in 1997 with “I Can Love You Better”.  From 1997-2003, the Texas trio charted 16 Top 40 hits with 14 of them reaching the Top Ten, and six topping the charts.

Then, in 2003, lead singer Natalie Maines told a foreign crowd that she was ashamed that then President George W. Bush was from Texas.  The fallout at country radio was swift, but not like Taylor!

“Travelin’ Soldier” was at the top of the country charts when Natalie’s words made is back to America.  Cumulus radio stations banned the Chicks and the song dropped off the charts in two weeks — from #1!

The Dixie Chicks returned with a new album, “Taking The Long Way”, in 2006.  It topped Billboard’s Top 200 and Country album charts, sold over two million copies, and won a total of five Grammy Awards.

They’re back on tour now, their first since 2006, and Natalie still has more to say!

Natalie

I’ll be seeing Natalie, Martie, and Emily for the second time in less than three weeks when they play the iWireless Center in Moline, Illinois, on September 15th, on the “DCX MMXVI World Tour”.

I’m currently listening to all my Dixie Chicks CDs again to rank my 20 favorite songs before the concert!

If you want to see the April 2012 blog I wrote about them and the war with country radio, here it is.  (It’ll open in a new window.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAY!

It’s not a milestone birthday, but here’s to a great year ahead Ray as you celebrate your birthday week.

While we may not be on a Danube River cruise in Europe like when we celebrated your 50th birthday, I hope you enjoyed the margarita and Mexican food Thursday night.

Here’s a trip down memory lane!

Ray 2

Ray 5

Ray, while you celebrated this birthday in the Quad Cities, it’s never too early to be thinking ahead of a fun place to be next year when it comes around again!

Here’s to many more birthdays (and vacations)!

DO YOU LOVE COTTON CANDY?

I love cotton candy and I eat it every time I go to Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.  cotton candy

However, I thought of it in a different way recently reading an interview with Jennifer Lawrence talking about her upcoming movie, “Passengers”, with Chris Pratt.

Lawrence says (referring to Pratt), “He’s a bag of Gummi Bears.  He’s human cotton candy.”

Three things crossed my mind:  (1) “human cotton candy” sounds like something Hannibal Lecter would make if he was slumming for a dinner party dessert, (2) I do like cotton candy, and (3), I’d like it even more if it comes in the shape of the new and improved Chris Pratt body!

“BREAKING BAD”

I have another thought about winter today.

I know the most critically acclaimed show of all time (Guinness World Records, 2013), “Breaking Bad” concluded its five year run in the fall of 2013.

Ray and I were finally going to binge watch it when we got snowed in this winter, but we started it this week and after just three episodes, all I can say is “it’s incredible” — even if we saw Walter White (Bryan Cranston) too many times in his tighty whities. 🙂

Now, if we start seeing Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) in his, that’ll be different!

While we’ll still be watching “Breaking Bad” this winter, we also have “House of Cards”, “Justified”, and “Tyrant” to binge watch on when the days get short, the air gets colder, and the snow piles up.

A BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR ME???

At my age, I don’t really make a big deal out of my birthdays since I’ve already passed many of the milestones (13, 16, 18, 21, 30, 40, and 50).  Okay, I still have many years to go before retirement and social security.

For my 50th birthday, Ray treated me to a dinner cruise on the Seine River, a trip to top of the Eiffel Tower, and a show at the world famous Moulin Rouge, where I was sipping champagne and watching very risque and sexy performers at the stroke of midnight!

AP R Moulin

But, this year there’ll be a fun birthday present that I might just have to buy for myself.

One of my favorite bands of all-time, Erasure, is releasing a mammoth boxed set called “From Moscow to Mars”.  If you’re a die-hard Erasure fan or a fan of 1980s music, you’ll know where that title came from.  I know, you’re racking your brain now!

Check out this incredible video teaser!

Who knows how much that 13 disc set with over 200 tracks will cost, but I think I’m worth it!

AND THERE’S MORE….

If that wasn’t enough, Michael Buble is back, too, with a new album, “Nobody But Me” on October 21st.

Michael Buble To Be Loved

His last album, “To Be Loved” came out more than three years ago and his last tour ended in March 2015.

Michael has been spending more time with his wife, Luisana, and their two sons, three-year-old Noah and seven-month-old Elias.

The first single and the title track came out last week.

ANOTHER CHRISTMAS OFFERING

Christmas is still four months away, but it’s that time of the year when details of upcoming holiday albums emerge.

Already, I’ve talked about a duets Christmas album from Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood and a new holiday album from Kacey Musgraves.

Illinois native and country hit maker Brett Eldredge will also be releasing his first Christmas collection this fall.

The album will feature classics and a new song called “Glow”.  It’ll also have a “big band and swing sound”.

Until we get the track listing and that first video, here’s Brett from the 2014 CMA Country Christmas special.

And, if it’s too early for you to listen to a Christmas song, here’s Brett with one of my favorite songs of last year, his #1 country smash, “Lose My Mind”.

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

They Said What??? Boy George, Chris Christie, & Angelina Jolie

NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE

(on Prince Harry’s visit to New York, referencing Harry’s naked Las Vegas scandal):  “I’m going to be spending the entire day with Prince Harry. And so believe me: Nobody’s going to get naked if I’m spending the entire day with him. OK? I think I can assure the people of New Jersey that.”

ACTRESS ANGELINA JOLIE

(on having undergone a preventive double mastectomy after learning she had an 87% risk of breast cancer):  I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer.  It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.

ACTOR JUSTIN BARTHA

(about the cancellation of his series, “The New Normal”, a show about a gay couple becoming parents with a surrogate): “The NBC executives get a lot of critique from the press, but they should be applauded for putting us on the air in the first place, because we still have a long way to go with equality in this country and around the world. Just read the comment section on your website [The Huffington Post] and you’ll see people spewing hateful language and hateful words about all types of people. So we already know that we have a long way to go for that and I’m not saying that The New Normal was a lightning bolt to the cause, but I do think it was a drop in the bucket and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

POP MUSIC ICON BOY GEORGE

(when asked if gay men are better off than in the 1980s):  “We shouldn’t have to feel lucky. I am shocked we are still having debates like gay marriage. On one hand, I think it’s very conservative to want to get married, that it’s a case of ‘if we’re more like them, they’ll like us more’. But on the other hand, who cares? The idea that it is somehow going to destroy civilization is so retarded.”

POP MUSIC ICON CYNDI LAUPER

(on the biggest change she’s seen as an HIV/AIDS advocate) :  “The biggest challenge today is that people don’t think HIV is that much of an issue anymore. While the drug therapies have done an incredible job of keeping people with HIV alive, it is an arduous journey for people taking the drugs. The side effects are significant. The public does not see HIV as a death sentence anymore. We need to continue to reinvest in prevention efforts and to put all the resources we can into ending the epidemic.”

“STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” & “AVATAR” ACTRESS ZOE SALDANA

“[I might] end up with a woman raising my children, that’s how androgynous I am.”

SINGER NATALIE MAINES OF THE DIXIE CHICKS

(who’s married to actor Adrian Pasdar and is the mother of their two children):  “I love Rachel Maddow. She would be my lesbian girl crush.  She’s hot! And she’s smart and beautiful … and I like her hair.”

ACTOR DEAN CAIN

“If anybody wants to get married, go ahead.  I have a lot of gay friends … I can’t understand why it’s an issue. For me, it’s a non-issue.”

Things I Look Forward To In 2013

It’s incredible that we’re already three weeks into the first month of 2013.  Where does the time go?  I remember being a kid and it seemed that the days lasted forever.  Now, I make lists just to get things done.  I’ve been pretty successful at not planning in the new year.  In the past, I would plan things a year in advance and I was always counting down to those things.  I never lived for “today”.

My main goal in the upcoming month is to return to the land of the working.  What?  I’ll figure that out in the weeks to come.

Otherwise, here are some of the things that I’m looking forward to in 2013 in the entertainment world.

2013 MUSIC

All_That_Echoes

Josh Groban’s voice is so incredible and sexy.  His new album, “All That Echoes”, comes out February 5, 2013, and the first single, “Brave” is already a smash.

This is a behind the scenes video of the song.  The real video has not been released yet.

SPRING 2013?

Cher’s latest, her 26th studio album and the first since 2001’s “Living Proof”, is expected to be released in March.  “Woman’s World” is the rumored first single and a tour is in the works this year.

Depeche Mode

Also, in March, the latest album from the English band, Depeche Mode.

Janet Jackson may or may not be working on a new album.  April 2013 is the release date that is circulating on the internet.  You know if it’s on the internet, it has to be true! 🙂

Natalie Maines

On May 7, 2013, Dixie Chicks lead singer, Natalie Maines, will release her solo debut, “Mother”, which is expected to be a rock album.

FALL 2013 or TO BE ANNOUNCED

ARTPOP

The third studio album from Lady Gaga, “ARTPOP” is expected by the fall????

Britney July 2011

And, Britney Spears will be releasing her eighth solo album this fall.  I sure hope it includes her current Top Ten hit, “Scream & Shout” with will.i.am because I don’t plan on buying his album.  Also, it’ll likely be announced soon that Britney will be taking up residence in Las Vegas as a regular performer to the tune of a rumored $100 million or more!

2013 TELEVISION

One new show that I want to see debuted last night and, of course, we were watching a marathon of “The X-Files” and forgot that it was on.  So, I’ll have to catch it online.

“The Following”, the new Kevin Bacon Fox series, looks incredible, creepy, and highly entertaining.  It focuses around serial killer, so it has the potential to be great.  If I start watching it, I’ll make it a regular part of my limited television viewing that includes “Nashville” (ABC) on Wednesday, “Elementary” on Thursday (CBS), and “Malibu Country on Friday (ABC).

There are two new shows that sound interesting.

Bates Motel

“Bates Motel” comes to A&E on March 18, 2013, starring Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates and Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates.  It’s a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror thriller, “Psycho”.

A&E has ordered ten, first season episodes.

Hannibal

And, in another “original” idea, NBC has ordered 13 episodes of “Hannibal”, yes that Hannibal.  As in, Hannibal Lecter, starring Mr. Claire Daines, Hugh Dancy.

dexter

I can’t wait until season seven of “Dexter”, the third season of “The Walking Dead”, and the fifth and final season of “Fringe” are released on DVD.

Right now, Ray and I are watching “Six Feet Under” (we’ll start season two soon) and we’re still watching the first season of “The X-Files”.

2013 MOVIES

Oz_-_The_Great_and_Powerful_Poster

On March 8th, Disney’s “Oz  The Great and Powerful” starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams arrives in theaters.  It’s a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz”.

In May, “Star Trek Into Darkness” hits theaters and in June, “Man of Steel” blasts onto movie screens.  While I want to see both movies, I’ll likely wait for them to released on DVD.  However, it’d be a disservice not to feature Henry Cavill (Superman) 🙂

*EXCLUSIVE* Henry Cavill returns to Canada to continue Superman Film [NO Canada, NO UK, NO Ireland, NO Germany, NO Austria] superman-man-of-steel-henry-cavill-set-photo-011

On June 21st, I want to see the delayed zombie apocalypse movie, “World War Z”, with Brad Pitt.  Like the last two movies I mentioned, I might wait for this to come to DVD, too.  Interesting that in this trailer, they mention the word “zombies”!

And, finally, we recently watched “The Hunger Games” and I loved it.  On November 22nd, the sequel, “The Hunger Games:  Catching Fire” arrives in theaters just in time for Thanksgiving.

CATCHING FIRE

Those are some of the things that excite me in the entertainment world right now.  Of course, I’ll lose interest in a few and I’ll find others to replace them.
