Random Thoughts — May 3, 2019

Now that May is here and the weather will start being nice on a regular basis (I hope), I’m ready to get out more and enjoy life.

So, I have just a few more blogs to share with you before I go on hiatus.

Thank you for checking out my random thoughts.  Feel free to share your thoughts about what I’m talking about and if we disagree, that’s fine.  Just do it diplomatically!

GET VACCINATED!

I know I probably have friends that don’t believe in vaccinating their children, but this is a subject where we sorely disagree.

If you don’t vaccinate, I’m sure you have your reasons.

I think people, of any age, should be up to date on their shots to help prevent the spread of contagions!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tweeted this on Monday!

KENT STATE MASSACRE

This weekend marks the 49th anniversary of the Kent State Massacre!

As you recall, the Ohio National Guard opened fire on the campus and the shootings left four students dead.

In May 2000, I was a reporter in Mansfield, Ohio, about 75 miles away from Kent State University and I got to cover the 30th anniversary of the shooting spree.

It was very eerie and I can’t believe that next year will be 50 years!

Here is the report that I filed in 2000.  My apologies for the quality since this was recorded on my phone from TV and VHS!

The story is still great!

2019 BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS

The 2019 Billboard Music Awards were amazing! It was a total throwback for me to the fun 1980s American Music Awards — so many great, exciting visual performances!

Madonna & Maluma, Taylor & Brendon Urie, Mariah Carey, Ciara, Paula Abdul and The Jonas Brothers rocked Las Vegas and the MGM Grand, along with Halsey and Kelly Clarkson (both performances)!!!

I’m still crushing on Brendon!

“KILLING EVE”

We’re midway through the eight-episode second season of BBC America’s “Killing Eve”.

I just finished binge watching the first season’s eight episodes and finally brought myself to start watching the second season.

After the shocking season one finale, I hesitated to start this season because I know I’ll have to wait for the next four episodes to air on television and then wait another year for the third season!

The show is absolutely incredible!

Sandra Oh, who won Best Actress awards in a drama from the Critics’ Choice Television Awards and the Golden Globes, is amazing, as Eve Polastri, an MI5 officer in London.

And, every time that Jodie Comer, who plays psychopathic, hired assassin Villanelle, is on screen, I’m mesmerized!

And, of course, I’m crushing on Sean Delaney, who plays Kenny Stowton, an ex-hacker who has been recruited by Eve in her search for Villanelle!

“SECOND ACT”

I love Jennifer Lopez and I’m hoping to see her in concert this summer.

Until then, you can catch her on this hit from last winter.  The $16 million comedy brought in $72.3 million in theaters.

Lopez plays Maya Vargas, an assistant manager at a Value Shop store, who is ready for a big promotion after working there for 15 years.

She’s passed over because she doesn’t have a college degree.

On her birthday, she makes a wish that is far-fetched.  But, through the magic of the internet and social media, things start happening for Maya, but it’s based on a lie!

Leah Remini is hilarious and sexy Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”) plays Lopez’s boyfriend.

Okay, the movie is cute, sexy, and funny, but it’s not totally realistic.  But, that’s why we watch some movies!

GRADE: B+

“ON THE BASIS OF SEX”

This movie is based on the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

It covers her life from her college years, when not too many women were enrolled at Harvard Law School, to her trying her first big case.

Felicity Jones (“The Theory of Everything”) plays Bader and dreamy Armie Hammer (“Call Me By Your Name”) plays her husband, Martin Ginsburg.

It’s a well told story and both actors are great, so I recommend it.  However, I’d highly suggest that you watch the superior “RBG” instead or in addition to “On The Basis of Sex”.

GRADE: B

“RBG”

In September 2018, I wrote, “This superb 97-minute feature directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen documents the career of 85-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

“SANTA CLARITA DIET” CANCELLED

I haven’t gotten around to watching the third season of this Netflix comedy.

I guess I should laugh and cherish each episode since it was cancelled!

Where will I watch Timothy Olyphant now?

SPECTRUM “ON DEMAND”

My cable company, Spectrum, is pretty much like any other cable company, most notably, Mediacom — very expensive and very unreliable.

While recently on a customer service call, I was told that “On Demand” is free.

I politely told the agent that while Spectrum may consider it “free” and there may not be a line on my bill that charges me for “On Demand”, when I pay them $140.40 a month, when I turn on the television to watch something on cable, it’s not free!

I was calling because there was a missing episode in season three of “Veep” and there are four missing episodes scattered about in seasons three and four of “Younger”!

“YOUNGER”

Speaking of… I’ve been trying to binge watch the TV Land series, “Younger” for over a year now.

I watched season one last spring while I was still in Panama City.  When I got to Duluth, Minnesota, seasons two through four were not available “On Demand”, yet I did DVR season five.

Now “On Demand”, all five seasons are available with random missing or unavailable episodes.

I’m just finished season four and for the missing episodes, I just read the Wikipedia episode synopsis and ventured on. 😦

“Younger” is from creator and producer Darren Star, who brought us the classics “Beverly Hills, 90120”, “Melrose Place” and “Sex and the City”.

It stars Sutton Foster, as Liza, a 40-year-old recently separated mother of a teenager, who’s trying to jump start her once thriving career.  She tries to get a job in publishing, but she realizes the industry is obsessed with much younger employees!

Her roommate and best friend, Maggie (Debi Mazar), gives her a makeover and she lands a job as a “26-year-old” and works for Diana Trout (a hilarious Miriam Shor) and alongside Kelsey Peters (Hilary Duff).

She meets and falls for young, inked, and insanely sexy Josh (Nico Tortorella), a tattoo artist, who thinks Liza is around his age, mid-20s!

I’ve crushed on Tortorella since he was on the first season of Fox’s “The Following”.

Nico Tortorella

On ‘Younger”, the bisexual/genderfluid actor is absolutely stunning!

And, the sexiness doesn’t end with Tortorella.  There’s also Peter Hermann (Charles) and Dan Amboyer (Thad).

Dan Amboyer

Amboyer (above) came out as gay in 2017 and announced he had married his long-term partner.

And, my new hottie in seasons three and four is Ben Rappaport!

Ben Rappaport

Season six debuts on June 12, 2019, on TV Land.

“ME”

Taylor Swift is back and she seems happy after the awesome, darker 2017 “Reputation” album.

This time she’s teaming up with sexy Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco.

Wonder if there’s going to be a duet with The Dixie Chicks on the new album?

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

My Fantasies Don’t Involve Football Leagues

I’m not really going to talk about the kind of fantasies that might involve Christian Grey (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) or since I mentioned football, Tom Brady.  Not that those would be bad, but…

Tom-Brady

Okay, minds out of the gutters.

Recently, I was talking about all of the “residencies” in Las Vegas, the ones coming up, and the “rumored” ones in the works.

Back in October 2012, I was fortunate to see the one of the best entertainers in music, Sir Elton John in “The Million Dollar Piano” at Caesars Palace.

Elton LasVegas

And, then last May, I saw Shania Twain at Caesars Palace.

Shania

And the night before I saw Shania, I saw Olivia Newton-John at the Flamingo.

Olivia

In addition to those “residencies”, I saw Madonna on my birthday in October 2012 at the MGM Grand.

Madonna

And, we saw Lady Gaga there on her “Born This Way Ball” Tour in January 2013 just three weeks before an injury, that required surgery, forced the cancellation of the rest of the tour.

Gaga Las Vegas

That was then and this is now.

Britney Spears is now playing a residency at Planet Hollywood and coming this summer at Caesars Palace, Mariah Carey will begin a residency in May and Reba and Brooks & Dunn will start in June.

Reba 2011

I absolutely adore Reba and I’ve seen her in concert twelve (yes, that’s 12) times and I met her ten years ago this April.

While I get lost in her beautiful voice, I would love to see Reba’s concerts in Vegas go back to the glitzy productions of costume changes, dancers, and various sets like when I first saw her in Chicago in 1995 and Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1996.

Every time since those first two shows, it was Reba in a no (or very few) frills concert — just her and her beautiful voice.

Reba’s new show with Brooks & Dunn is already selling out months in advance.

And, recently, it was announced that “The Boss” Diana Ross would be performing a nine-show engagement this spring at The Venetian.

The hotel is trying to become a competitive concert venue for residencies after a successful show with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

Also, hushed rumors on “The Strip” say that talks are in the works for residencies for Ricky Martin, Lionel Richie, and the subject of today’s fantasy (see, I’m back to that again).

NO, MY FIRST NAME AIN’T BABY, IT’S JANET, MISS JACKSON, IF YOU’RE NASTY

Just the other day, I was saying that I’d love to see Janet Jackson in a residency in Vegas and then I see an article that she might be close to signing a deal with either The Venetian or Planet Hollywood when Britney’s “Piece of Me” show is on hiatus.

It’s also rumored that Miss Jackson will be dropping a new album in 2015.

I have two of Janet’s concert VHS tapes (no typo there, VHS — not DVD): “The Velvet Rope Tour” and “Live in Hawaii”.

Now, here’s where my ultimate fantasy comes in, as if seeing Janet for the first time in concert wouldn’t be enough.

Janet-Jackson-And-Paula-Abdul

Before Miss Jackson takes the stage, special guest Paula Abdul, Janet’s former choreographer, would come out and do a 20-minute set of her high-energy dance and pop radio hits from the late-1980s and early-1990s.  And, it would have to include “Rush Rush”!

At this point, my imagination runs away from me.  As Paula wraps up her set, either in a special effects hologram or on the concert monitors, Paula and Janet are in a diner in the current day and you hear:

“What’s up girl?
He stood me up again
Again?
Mmhmm
Well what’s up with this guy?
Do you really like him that much?
Yes honey, I love him, he is fine,
he does a lot of nice things for me I know he used to do nice stuff for you,
but what has he done for you lately?

And, then the arena explodes with a fabulous light show and Janet kicking off a magical show with “What Have You Done For Me Lately”!

I can’t remember how many times my friend, Steve, and I did this video routine over the years getting ready to go out for a night of clubbing!

And, one final note about Vegas, concerts, and holograms.

I recently read that a new concert with a “hologram” Liberace is coming to town.

If that’s successful, I have one suggestion Vegas  — get Richard Carpenter on the line and bring the angelic-voiced Karen Carpenter back to life and back to the stage soon!

As you can tell, I’m obsessed with shows in Vegas.  There it isn’t just a concert, it is magic!

Don’t tell Ray, but I’ll be working on convincing him to retire to Las Vegas in a few years.

They Said What??? Rick Perry, Katy Perry, & Paula Abdul

TEXAS GOVERNOR RICK PERRY

“Every man who has had relations with a woman has a right to protect his family, and that means limiting a physician’s ability to impose abortion on would-be fathers.”

MORE PERRY

“abortion destroys a man’s ability to be a man” which “could leave some men to turn to homosexuality, because neither way is he going to be able to have a child.”

SCHOOL TEACHER DAVID McNALLY

(talking about Hitler in class.  He was fired from his job at Kilwinning Academy in Scotland):  “Hitler wasn’t all bad…he killed the Jews, the gays and the disabled.”

MEGAN & GRACE PHELPS-ROPER

(granddaughters of Fred Phelps, founder of the cult group , the Westboro Baptist Church):   “We know that we’ve done and said things that hurt people.  Inflicting pain on others wasn’t the goal, but it was one of the outcomes. We wish it weren’t so, and regret that hurt.”

FORMER WASHINGTON REDSKINS DEFENSIVE END DEXTER MANLEY

“I think Troy Aikman is a queer.”

MORE MANLEY

(asked if he’d like to apologize for his offensive remarks): “No.  I’ll just say I take that back. Since he’s a Cowboys fan.”

POP STAR KATY PERRY

“Like females in pop — everybody’s getting naked.  I mean, I’ve been naked before but I don’t feel like I have to always get naked to be noticed.”

MORE PERRY

“I’m talking about all of them. I mean, it’s like everybody’s so naked. It’s like, put it away.  I’ve taken it off for — I’ve taken it out here and there. And I’m not necessarily judging.
I’m just saying sometimes it’s nice to play that card but also it’s nice to play other cards.”

FORMER POP STAR & “AMERICAN IDOL” JUDGE PAULA ABDUL

“Twerking has been around for many, many years.  I think when girls dance, they should be girls.  I don’t find it the most attractive kind of dance. My Chihuahua can twerk and stick her tongue out at the same time too.”

“SCANDAL” STAR KERRY WASHINGTON

“I like how people will post pictures of me with other women that I adore, hugging on red carpets, and say, ‘See?’ Are we so uncomfortable with love between two people of the same gender that we immediately label it as sexual? But I’ve never been bothered by the lesbian rumor.  There’s nothing offensive about it, so there’s no reason to be offended.”

POP ICON LADY GAGA

“You know what? It’s not a lie that I am bisexual and I like women, and anyone that wants to twist this into ‘she says she’s bisexual for marketing,’ this is a f**king lie. This is who I am and who I have always been.”

POP STAR KATY PERRY

(about singing backup on a song in 2004 for Mick Jagger and having dinner with him):  “he hit on me when I was 18.”

A REP FOR MICK JAGGER

He “categorically denies that he has ever made a pass at Katy Perry.”

Peeps’ Friday ’80s Flashbacks

It’s Friday and the traditional weekend is approaching.  I say that because my weekend, and vacation, started Wednesday.  Let’s flashback to the 1980s with three of my favorites.  One, you’ll definitely know, one will jog your memory, and one, you probably missed back then.

“Forever Your Girl” — Paula Abdul

Before she was a reality show loony bird, Paula Abdul was a choreographer for Janet Jackson and chart-topping pop star.  I remember buying her first 12″ dance single in 1988.  “Knocked Out” only made it #41 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it was a club hit.  The follow-up single only reached #88.  However, she became a household name with her third release from the album, “Forever Your Girl”.

“Straight Up” reached #1 on the Hot 100 and that started a run of eight consecutive Top Ten songs.  Of those eight, six reached #1 (In addition to “Straight Up”, there was “Forever Your Girl”, “Cold Hearted”, “Opposites Attract”, “Rush Rush”, and “The Promise of A New Day”.

Abdul’s last Top 40 hit on the Hot 100 was “My Love Is For Real” in 1995.  It reached #28.  Paula would go one to have 11 Top 40 hits with 8 of those hitting the Top Ten.

My selection today is the title track for her first album that reached the top of the charts in 1989.  It spent two weeks at #1 and the video was directed by David Fincher and starred a very young Elijah Wood and Trevor Wright, who went on to star in one of my favorite movies, “Shelter”.

“Ain’t Even Done With The Night” — John Cougar

This Indiana rocker hit the music scene with the name John Cougar and Johnny Cougar, but as he became a star, he changed it to John Cougar Mellencamp, and eventually, in 1991, he took back his real name and dropped the Cougar from his act.

I saw him in concert in the 1980s in Carbondale, Illinois, and he was fantastic.

John, as a I’ll call him today, had a total of 22 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.  His first hit, “I Need A Lover” peaked at #28 in 1979 and he scored his last hit in 1996 with “Key West Intermezzo” and I admit by that time I was only listening to dance and country, so I don’t remember that one.

However, he hit it big in 1982 with his album, “American Fool” and the first two releases, the #2 “Hurts So Good” and the #1 smash, “Jack & Diane”.  That would be his only #1 song.

My selection today is a song that only reached #17 in 1981, but I still love “Ain’t Even Done With the Night” and it helped me transition over to pop music from country.  The album title, “Nothin’ Matters and What If It Did” is awesome!  (And, look at that baby face and he was 28!)

“Chain Reaction”  — Diana Ross

Diana Ross is one of the most successful artists in the history of music.  As a solo artist and as a member of  The Supremes, she hit the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 a total of 52 times.  Of those hits, 30 hit the Top Ten, and she has a total of 18 #1 songs.

Her first hit with The Supremes was in 1963 and the last #1 was “Someday We’ll Be Together”.  As a solo artist, her first release reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

However, her second solo hit, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” would become the first of six solo #1 songs.  That would be followed by “Touch Me In The Morning”, “Theme from Mahogany”, “Love Hangover”, “Upside Down”, and Endless Love” with Lionel Richie.

As a solo artist, Diana had 27  Top 40 songs and 12 of those reached the Top Ten.

My selection today, “Chain Reaction” is my favorite Diana Ross song.  It was a huge failure in the U.S.  It only reached #66 in two chart tries on the Billboard Hot 100, although it did reach #7 on the Billboard Dance Chart.  Bit, it did top the charts in the U.K. and Australia.

Have a great weekend!
