Random Friday Thoughts — July 13, 2018

The weekend is almost here and it’s Friday the 13th again!

Jason V

Thank you for taking time to check out my random thoughts.

BREAKING NEWS — I’M HAPPY! 🙂

“Pose” on FX was renewed for a second season!

HOLLYWOOD MATINEE IDOL DIES

1950s and 1960s matinee idol and LGBT pioneer Tab Hunter died earlier this week, three days shy of his 87th birthday.

tab

Just four weeks ago, I wrote about him and his book “Confidential”. It was about his life as a gay man being marketed as a lady’s man in Hollywood.

While publicly dating beautiful ingenues like Natalie Wood, one of his most intense love affairs was with the man I was named for — “Pyscho” star Anthony Perkins.

“NEVER AGAIN”

This should never be the only choice!

NEVER AGAIN

FEELING GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF, EVEN UNIQUE!

I get daily numbers on how many times my blog is viewed, what entries are being looked at, and from what country.

A few weeks ago, I noticed a June 3, 2016 blog getting a lot of views, so I clicked on it to see what my “Random Friday Thoughts” were that week.

And, this was in there and I loved it that day as much as the first time I saw it.

Fish Be You

At the time, I posted it on Facebook and it got a lot of love. On Twitter, while loved, it also got this response.

Unique

As I blogged that day, “I’m the kind of person that tries to respond to all comments (good or bad), but I’ll not carry on a lengthy debate and waste my time with someone who’s main objective is just to argue just for the sake of it.

Trust me, most of the posts on this person’s Twitter page proves he/she just trolls the internet and social media to make negative comments.

Move on and troll elsewhere!”

Well, here’s an update on that account.

Account Suspended

I may not be unique, but my blog is still going after six years and my Twitter account is still active!

“CLAWS”

On TNT’s “Claws”, Desna (the amazing and incredibly sexy Niecy Nash) and her girls at the Nail Artisans in Palmetto, Florida, are still making nails that look flawless.

Claws 1.gif

But, after laundering money for the Dixie Mafia in season one with the pain clinic acting as a front for drug trade, they now have a bigger, international problem to deal with.

Zlata Ostrousky and her Russian goons have Desna under a beautifully manicured thumb.

Ironically, as the ladies at the salon were making the business more Russian-ized for their new boss, they placed a photo of 45 and his boss daddy, Vladimir Putin, on the wall. 🙂

Wait!

Don’t the Russians have enough to do with interfering in American presidential elections (allegedly), buying the right to host the World Cup soccer tournament, condemning and making the lives of the LGBTQ community miserable, and poisoning people with substandard street alcohol to be running a drug cartel in Florida?

I love the additon of Zlata (Franka Potente), the head of the Russian mob family.

Vlata.jpg

In the last episode, there was a classic exchange when Desna wanted to let Zlata in on an assassination attempt on her life from Clay and the Dixie Mafia.

Desna says that she heard a rumor and Zlata replies, “Is true. I feed raw hamburger to President at sex party at Mar-a-Lago!”

Just last week, TNT renewed “Claws” for a third season for 2019! 🙂

COMPARING APPLES TO ORANGES

There may never be another Madonna, Michael Jackson, or the Beatles — the chart dominance they accomplished will be legendary.

However, if you just look at the headlines and Billboard chart numbers, they’ve already been replaced!

Here’s a headline this week:

DRAKE

Okay, so technically, Drake breaks the Beatles records.

And, with five new songs in the Top Ten on the Hot 100, he surpasses Michael Jackson with the most solo male Top Ten hits.

But, this is like comparing apples to oranges.

apple oranges

The Billboard Hot 100 chart rules have changed many times since its inception in 1958.

When you see how many hits Madonna, the Beatles, and Michael Jackson scored on the Hot 100, it was because those were bonafide hits that radio was playing and you could buy as a single.

Album tracks could not chart on the Hot 100 if there’s wasn’t a physical single.

That’s changed now, so it’s MUCH MUCH easier for “songs” from albums to chart on the Hot 100 instead of “singles”.

So, if this was a commonplace rule from the 1950s-1990s, then Drake’s accomplishment would likely pale in comparison.

Beatles.jpg

When the Beatles had the top five songs on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 4, 1964, it was because they were popular on radio and in stores!

Here’s a couple more interesting tidbits for you. The old rules kept some of the biggest songs in music from charting on the Billboard Hot 100 like No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” from 1996 (16 weeks at #1 on the “Hot 100 Airplay” chart) and Madonna’s 1985 megahit, “Into The Groove”.

While that song hit #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart and Billboard honored it as the “Dance Single of the Decade”, it never hit the Hot 100 because it was the B-side to the 12″ dance single “Angel”.

Overall, Madonna still leads all artists with the most Top Ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with 38.

Elvis would be second with 36 (if you count his Hot 100 hits and Pre-Hot 100 hits), The Beatles are third with 34 and Drake and Rihanna are tied for fourth with 31.

I STILL “LOVE, SIMON”

Have you seen this stellar coming-of-age movie yet? I saw it back in March when it first came out. You can now rent it at Redbox.

I think it’s a must see for every one with a child or teenager dealing with today’s fast changing world!

And, Nick Robinson is absolutely adorable as Simon (Josh Duhamel, as his dad, ain’t too bad either!) 🙂

And, since I talked about Whitney Houston last week and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” is my favorite Whitney song, I’ll feature this short video from the movie.

And, how could you forget Damon’s dance audition on “Pose”?

Oh wait, if people were actually watching this beautiful, touching FX show, you wouldn’t forget it!

90s NOSTALGIA

Since moving to Duluth, Minnesota, this month, I’ve been a little nostalgic about my previous times living in the Midwest and Great Lakes back in the 1990s.

Let’s take a country route this week with a voice that still melts me today to hear. 🙂

Canadian Paul Brandt broke out in 1996 just as I was heading to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, for my first real television job.

“My Heart Has A History” reached #5 on the Billboard Country chart here in the U.S., and the follow-up, “I Do”, became his biggest U.S. hit peaking at #2. It also became a “wedding song of the year”.

Sadly, Paul only scored three more moderate hits here in America — peaking at #39, #38, and #38.

However, in Canada, his first five singles, including the two I previously mentioned, all topped the chart.

He’s still popular in Canada. Overall, he’s had 26 hits on the Canadian Country chart with 20 of them making the Top Ten, and 6 hitting #1.

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Tab Hunter Confidential

Matinee idol and LGBT legend Tab Hunter has died at the age of 86.

Hunter was the hottest sex symbol is the 1950s and was usually seen in public with beautiful ingenues, like Natalie Wood.

TAB NATALIE.png

It was all a front to hide his sexuality and maintain his matinee idol status.

Tab Hunter Confidential

In his book, the 19th that I’ve read this year, Hunter doesn’t go into any sordid details about his sexual escapades, but he did talk a lot about his relationship with “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins.

tab_hunter_anthony_perkins

One interesting story that Hunter shared was when an ex-lover tried to blackmail him. The man, desperate for money, threatened to sell all the letters Hunter had sent him to the “Enquirer” in the late-1970s.

Hunter paid him off ($10,000) and the man asked to keep them because they meant something to him!!!! Um, yeah, blackmail material. However, the man died a few years later.

tab.JPG

Hunter expanded his resume by starring in two John Waters’ films with Divine in the 1980s: 1981’s “Polyester” and 1985’s much underappreciated “Lust in the Dust”.

He also spent six-weeks at #1 on the Billboard pop charts in 1957 with “Young Love”.

Hunter was just three day shy of his 87th birthday when he died Sunday. He was with his partner, film producer Allan Glaser, for more than 35 years.

Random Friday Thoughts — June 15, 2018

It’s been a few weeks without a new “Random Friday Thoughts” as I moved across the country to Duluth, Minnesota.

This now marks my third weekend in the “Northland” and I’m looking forward to making it my home.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my thoughts.

TWO YEARS LATER

Earlier this week, we marked the two year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida.

Pulse

49 people were massacred while out having a good time with their family and friends. At the time, it was the worst mass shooting in modern American history. That distinction now goes to the Las Vegas shooting last October.

Pulse

Former President Barack Obama, in 2016, said, “This is a sobering reminder that attacks on any American — regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation — is an attack on all of us and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as a country. And no act of hate or terror will ever change who we are or the values that make us Americans.”.

No comment from #45 this year on the anniversary.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT BUSH

On a happier note, earlier this week, the nation’s 41st President George Herbert Walker Bush turned 94-years-old.

George-H-W-Bush-wife-Barbara-Bush

He’s now the oldest living president and the first former president to live to age 94.

It’s been a tough year for him with numerous health issues and hospitalizations on top of losing his wife of 73 years, Barbara, back in April.

Jimmy Carter

My favorite president, Jimmy Carter, is now the second oldest living president. He’ll turn 94 on October 1, 2018.

“HALLOWEEN” IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK!

Excitement is building for Halloween and it has nothing to do with what costumes will be popular and how much candy you’ll get.

The reboot of the “Halloween” series hits theaters Friday, October 19, 2018, and it’ll pick up as the sequel to 1978’s original.

In this movie universe, none of the other sequels even happened! After Rob Zombie’s very rancid and painful to watch “Halloween II” (2009), it’s time for a fresh start!

The trailer was released last Friday and had almost a million view in just four days!

“TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL”

Movie icon Tab Hunter was the hottest sex symbol is the 1950s and was usually seen in public with beautiful ingenues.

It was all a front to hide his sexuality and maintain his matinee idol status.

CELINE DION GOES ON AND ON

The 18th book I read this year and shared a blog about was “Celine Dion: My Story, My Dream”.

Celine

I really enjoyed reading about Celine’s life story and I don’t want to give too much away in case you want to read it.

I was surprised to hear that she’s the youngest of fourteen (yes 14!) children!

I became aware of Celine in the early-1990s at the same time as most Americans. We also learned around that time that she was in a relationship with her manager and future husband, Rene Angelil. (They married December 17, 1994 in Montreal, Quebec.)

Celine wedding

It was still a little weird reading about the love affair — with the 26-year age difference. She was the one that fell in love first and pursued him! But, knowing that the love was real made me smile. We all want that!

I love how Celine was upfront and honest about the nastiness of the press about things such as her love life and her weight (calling her anorexic). Being a recovering food addict, I feel for her having endured that.

Celine House

While Celine has been a multi-millionaire for much of career (after hitting it big worldwide), I’m glad she didn’t sugarcoat her love of spending money. She earned it!

Celine is definitely a survivor and one of the greatest entertainers of all time! Definitely check out “Celine Dion: My Story, My Dream”!

And, I shared my ten favorite Celine Dion songs. Here’s my all-time Celine favorite!

You can read about how the book saved two ducks from a turtle and see my other nine favorites by clicking here:

“THE GREATEST SHOWMAN”

Before beginning my journey north, I did get a chance to check out the musical “The Greatest Showman”.

It was very entertaining and Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron looked and sounded amazing.

Many people know Jackman as Wolverine from the “X-Men” series, but he does have a background in musical theater and musicals (“Les Miserables” in 2012).

He gained worldwide attention playing flamboyant Australian entertainer Peter Allen on Broadway in “The Boy From Oz” in 2003, which earned Jackman a Tony Award for “Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical”.

In “The Greatest Showman”, he plays P.T. Barnum, a down on his luck showman and entrepreneur that started the world famous circus.

The song, “This Is Me”, won the Golden Globe Award for “Best Original Song” and it was also nominated for an Oscar.

It’s an incredible life affirming number!

My other favorite was from Jenny Lind, the “Swedish Nightingale” (Rebecca Ferguson), “Never Enough”, with real vocals by Loren Allred.

GRADE: B

“SANTA CLARITA DIET”

If you’ve never watched this Netflix zombie comedy, what are you waiting for?

Season one was funny and season two was outstanding — even funnier and more crisp and cutting.

It’s the story of a typical California family that wakes up one day and the wife/mom begins violently vomiting and then starts craving human flesh.

The main cast, Drew Barrymore (Sheila Hammond), Timothy Olyphant (Joel Hammond), and Liv Hewson (Abby, their daughter), are incredible.

However, the one that cracks me up the most is Eric Bemis (Skyler Gisondo), the Hammond’s teenage neighbor and friend/love interest for Abby.

Small spoiler_alert_300_w2ahead!

In one scene, Eric is about to lose his virginity to Ramona, a Rite-Aid employee, and tries to sound more experienced than he really is. 🙂

Eric Ramona

Ramona : There are a million things I wanna do to you.”

Eric Bemis : There’s a million things I’ve had done to me. But I did all of them myself. Actually, it’s just one thing a million times.”

“Santa Clarita Diet” will be back for a third season in 2019.

HUGH GRANT & BEN WHISHAW MOVIE

Hugh Grant goes gay again (“Maurice” in 1987 and “Our Sons” in 1991) and this time with my major crush Ben Whishaw.

Ben Whishaw

In “A Very English Scandal”, a three-part series, Grant plays former British Liberal political party leader Jeremy Thorpe, who went on trial for the attempted murder of his ex-lover, Norman Scott (Whishaw) in 1979.

Spoiler! 🙂

The limited series was written by Russell T. Davies (“Queer as Folk”) and directed by Stephen Frears (“Florence Foster Jenkins” and “The Queen”).

Ben_Whishaw

If you’re not familiar with my major crush Whishaw (other than as the voice of Paddington, the bear), check out “London Spy”…

and my favorite movie of 2015, “Lilting”.

Random Friday Thoughts — February 24, 2017

Today’s random thoughts is short and sweet. I don’t think I have anything too controversial in here, but with human nature, I can’t be sure. 🙂

Have a great last weekend of February!

OSCARS WEEKEND

Millions will be tuned in Sunday night to see the best of Hollywood (at least those nominated and chosen) accept their awards and make political speeches.

Oscar-Nominations-2014

I’m basing my picks on my “entertainment” knowledge.

The only nominated movies and performances I’ve seen, so far, in the top categories are “Arrival”, “Captain Fantastic”, “Florence Foster Jenkins”, and “Hell Or High Water”.

My picks for the big prizes are:

Best Picture: “La La Land”. I saw “Arrival” and it’s definitely not going to be that one.

Best Actor: Denzel Washington. If not, it’ll be Casey Affleck. However, I’d love for it to be Viggo Mortensen.

Best Actress: Emma Stone

Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali

Best Supporting Actress: Viola Davis

LIBYAN TRAGEDY

Earlier this week, at least 74 bodies of migrants washed ashore from the Mediterranean Sea in Libya.

libya

Libya is a North Africa country on the other side of the world that I’d never want to visit, even if it borders the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.

It’s a country strife in human rights violations and political regimes.

While it’s so far away (and tragedies like this one are a frequent occurrence), it’s gotten minor news coverage. Sadly, many across the rest of the world probably had little concern about it as it crossed their online news feeds.

But, for some reason (maybe since I’m pontificating about life and my future), it really hit me.

I didn’t know those people and I know things like this happen. Yet, those people yearned for something better. They were willing to sacrifice the most prized gift we’re given — life — for it.

What it all comes down to is that those people were someone’s loved ones!

CAITLYN JENNER SAYS “CALL ME”

It’s no secret that I’ve never been a Caitlyn Jenner fan.

While she’s educating herself more and making progress, I still feel she’s out of touch with what life is really like for the average transgender American.

However, “from, well, one Republican to another”, she’s finally stepping up and speaking out against U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and her “friend” in the White House.

While I say “kudos” to Jenner on this, I’m still shaking my head to think that she didn’t have the foresight to see this coming!

This leads me into part two of this thought process!

JACKIE EVANCHO & TRANSGENDER RIGHTS

16-year-old classical singer Jackie Evancho sang the National Anthem at the Inauguration of #45 last month.

To those familiar with her, this was a little (or a lot) confusing since her sister, Juliet, is transgender. It probably wouldn’t be a stretch to think of how the new administration would feel about LGBT rights, specifically transgender rights.

Earlier this week, the president rolled back federal government protections allowing transgender students to use the bathroom associated with their gender identity.

Evancho reached out to #45 via Twitter: “I am obviously disappointed in the decision to send the bathroom issue to the states to decide. “.

j-j

She also tweeted: “ u gave me the honor 2 sing at your inauguration. Pls give me & my sis the honor 2 meet with u 2 talk rghts ❤

So far, she hasn’t heard back from him.

What are your thoughts? I’m torn.

Maybe she performed to make a connection to discuss her sister and transgender rights? Or, did she do it for the publicity and a possible bump in record and concert ticket sales?

Before the performance, she and her family were questioned about the new administration’s views and her transgender sister and they basically said that it’s a performance and not political.

Well, I do have issues with that one. It is political!

REMEMBERING AL JARREAU

As I mentioned last week with the passing of French actress Emmanuelle Riva, real life gets in the way and I miss some things (even with real news and fake news on Facebook).

I was saddened to learn that jazz, R&B, and pop legend Al Jarreau died the weekend before Valentine’s Day at the age of 76.

He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and didn’t release his first album until he was 35 years old!

If you’re not a jazz or R&B music fan, you’ll likely remember him singing the theme to the late-1980s ABC hit show “Moonlighting” with Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd.

Jarreau charted 11 Top 40 hits on the R&B chart with four reaching the Top Ten.

On the Billboard Hot 100, he had three hits. The “Moonlighting” theme reached #23 in 1987, but “We’re In This Love Together” from 1981, my favorite, was his biggest. It reached #15.

Throughout his career, Jarreau won seven Grammy Awards and was nominated for 17 more.

CHRISTMAS MUSIC RELEASES STRESS

When I find myself stressed or really bummed out, Christmas music always snaps me back into reality.

The past few weeks have been rather stressful and Wednesday morning, I found myself letting Mariah Carey soothe me.

If you’ve never heard her version of “Oh Santa” or seen the retro video, check it out.

Hey, don’t feel bad for clicking on the video, Christmas is only ten months away!

CLOSING IN ON HISTORY

Don’t think too hard and don’t Google it. What artist has had the most Top Ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100?

Could it be Elvis? The Beatles? Madonna? Whitney Houston? Michael Jackson? Mariah Carey? Janet Jackson?

It’s actually Rihanna!

Rihanna Rolling Stone

With “Love On The Brain” moving into the Top Ten this week on the Billboard Hot 100, Rihanna is now in third place in music history!

It becomes her 30th Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and she didn’t scored her first until 2005!

So, who’s ahead of her?

In second place with 34 Top Ten Hot 100 hits, it’s The Beatles.

Their first was “Love Me Do” in 1962 (it hit #1) and their last was “Free As A Bird” (peaked at #6) in 1995.

And, in first place, it’s Madonna, with 38 Top Ten hits!

Madonna1985

Her first Top Ten hit was “Lucky Star” (#4 in 1984) and her most recent was “Give Me All Your Luvin'” (with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.) in 2012. It peaked at #10.

Behind Rihanna for the most Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten hits are Michael Jackson in 4th place with 29 and Stevie Wonder is in 5th place with 28.

Elton John, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson are tied in sixth place with 27 Top Ten Hot 100 hits and the Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston, and Paul McCartney are in ninth place with 23.

rihanna-perfume

By the way, Rihanna was just named Harvard’s “Humanitarian of the Year” and will be appearing in the final season of “Bates Motel”, now airing on A&E, as Marion Crane, Janet Leigh’s iconic character from the original “Psycho” movie!

CAITLYN, UNTIL THE PHONE RINGS, “CALL ME”

OR, “CALL ME MAYBE”

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Random Friday Thoughts — August 12, 2016

The weekend is here! While I love what I do, I love my weekends even more. Okay, I love vacations, desserts, and buffets even more than just weekends. 🙂

Whatever you have planned this weekend, enjoy it.

Thank you for checking out my “Random Friday Thoughts”. As always, we don’t have to agree on everything, we just have to disagree diplomatically.

2016 SUMMER OLYMPICS WOES

When it was announced that Rio de Janeiro won the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics, I thought it was a bad idea. My first thought was crime.

But, now that the games are underway, many stories coming out of Brazil are about the dirty, unhealthy waters polluted with trash, dead animals, and God only knows what else!

Rio Water.jpg

This is Guanabara Bay on the coastal Atlantic. It’s also where the Olympic sailing events take place. It’s not only polluted with trash, but also with raw sewage.

Eeew, no thanks!

SOME OLYMPICS FANS CAN BE DISGUSTING, TOO!

While I wish the American athletes the very best in bringing home plenty of gold, silver, and bronze, I’m dismayed and disgusted with the abuse being directed toward LGBT athletes.

Megan Rapinoe, the midfielder for the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team, is one of 44 openly LGBT athletes at the games.

Megan

Last week, many people heard the word “bicha” (roughly translates to the derogatory f-word used to describe a gay man) chanted at both the U.S vs. New Zealand and the Australia vs. Canada women’s soccer games.

Rapinoe says it was “personally hurtful”. She adds, “They need to understand if all of you are willing to do that, what does that say to a gay player? Especially in the men’s game. What does that say to players who are struggling to come out?”

She goes on to say, “I don’t think that all Brazilians fans or everyone that was there last night is homophobic. But I think that they are complicit in it as long as they’re doing it.”

AND, LET’S NOT FORGET NBC SPORTS!

When Brazilian beach volleyball player Larissa Franca and her sports partner beat Team USA in a match, Larissa went into the crowd and hugged her wife.

NBC Sports

However, NBC Sports commentator Chris Marlowe stated, “That is her husband. She married Lili in 2013.”

“Husband?” How offensive!

When two women are married, the other partner is referred to as a “wife”. When you talk of Ray, you would refer to him as my “husband”. Is that so difficult?

Marlowe did issue a half-assed apology, “I’m sorry for the mistake today. Clearly, Liliane is Larissa’s wife.”

RACISM AND LACK OF HARMONY

After comedian and “Ghostbusters” star Leslie Jones suspended her Twitter account last month because of ignorant, racist comments and rants, Normani Kordei of the all-female group Fifth Harmony is following suit.

Normani

This past weekend, she posted on her account, “Over the course of this last week and especially over the last 48 hours I’ve not just been cyber bullied, I’ve been racially cyber bullied with tweets and pictures so horrific and racially charged that I can’t subject myself any longer to hate.”

She went on to say, “I’m not the first black female celebrity to deal with this and I’m sure I won’t be the last.”

Haters, wake the hell up! This is not the 1800s or, even, the 1960s. People need to expand their minds and not just open their mouths!

Normani, I’m with you and all of your sisters in harmony! I can’t wait for your return.

Meanwhile, I’m loving “7/27”, the latest Fifth Harmony album and their current Top Ten hit, “All In My Head (Flex)”.

LESS POLITICAL — FOR NOW

Now that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the two major party candidates for this year’s presidential election, I’m going to TRY to refrain from political talk — for now.

Anthony NOH8

The reason is that I don’t have one good thing to say about Trump and his vile attitude toward <insert group here>.

I know it’s going to be really hard especially when crazy stuff just comes out of Trump’s mouth daily — the second amendment/assassination off-the-cuff comment earlier this week comes to mind!

I live in the real world and I know there are many that don’t like Hillary.

HIllary Flag

With that being said, elections shouldn’t be about the lesser of two evils. However, we don’t have a political system where there are three or four parties that have a real chance of winning.

Yes, I know that Gary Johnson and Jill Stein are running, but they really only serve as vote stealers from Clinton and Trump.

“FIGHT SONG 2.0”

So, with those comments, I’m sharing this video. Originally, it was just an inspiring song by Rachel Platten that hit the Top Ten at radio last summer.

Now, in the hands of Platten and Hillary supporter and “Pitch Perfect” director/actress Elizabeth Banks, it has a much different sound and meaning.

Even if you’re not a Hillary supporter, it’s still a very cool Hollywood production if you like a cappella.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Psycho

READY FOR FALL?

While I’ve enjoyed the pool time and having a nice tan, I’m ready for fall and winter. I’m so ready to catch up on movies and to binge watch several television series.

Also, speaking of fall, are you ready for this year’s seasonal M&M’s?

Boo Scotch

“White BOO-terscotch” will be a combination of “the scary good flavors of butterscotch and white chocolate for the perfect seasonal treat”. It’ll be found exclusively at Target.

Pecan Pie M&M

Pecan Pie and Candy Corn flavors will also return along with a harvest blend version of Crispy S’mores!

AND, HERE’S SOMETHING A LITTLE FISHY!

The new Oreo flavor this fall at Kroger: Swedish Fish!

SF Oreos

I’ve never been a big fan of the candies, but Ray loves them. So, if we buy them, he can have the whole bag, minus one or two, of course. I’ll have to try them!

PICK HIT

It’s hard to believe that Usher exploded onto the music scene almost twenty years ago with his #1 hit, “You Make Me Wanna…” in 1997.

He’s now topped the charts 22 times!

I love Usher’s “Yeah”, “Love in This Club”, “OMG”, “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love”, and “Without You”, but I didn’t like “I Don’t Mind”, his song with Juicy J in 2014, at all.

His latest, “Crash”, is already one of my favorite songs of 2016.

This is the second release from his upcoming album, “Flawed”, which has no solid release date yet.

REBA FLASHBACK #1

Reba is currently performing with Brooks & Dunn is Las Vegas in a very successful residency at Caesars Palace.

20160731_145128.jpg

That’s where you’ll have to catch her since country radio pretty much ignored her last studio album, 2015’s “Love Somebody”.

Reba Love Somebody

Twelve years ago this week, Reba scored her 23rd #1 song on the Billboard Country charts with “Somebody”, one of my favorite Reba videos. I’m such a romantic!

Since then, she’s topped the Country charts two more times: “Consider Me Gone” (four weeks, 2010) and “Turn on the Radio” (one week, 2011).

REBA FLASHBACK #2

And, it was 29 years ago this week that Reba topped the country chart with my absolute favorite of all of her hits, “One Promise Too Late”.

Country radio, play the new country that Reba releases and I’ll gladly start listening to the genre again!

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Random Friday Thoughts — June 20, 2014

Happy Friday! I hope you had a great week and that you’re looking forward to the weekend. Thank you for taking the time to check out my random thoughts this week.

SUMMER STARTS SATURDAY MORNING

Today is the last day of spring! Summer officially begins at 5:51 a.m. CDT Saturday. If this means relaxing in the backyard swimming pool and anticipating my two fall trips (those details coming at a later date), I’m all for it.

Pool

Every summer, we plant a small garden of mostly tomatoes. First, it was for Miss ABBA, who loved them. Now we do it in her memory.

This year, I actually started most of the tomato plants inside when snow was still on the ground! Most of our tomatoes are “ice white cherry” from seeds I bought on ebay. We also have a common red ones and peppers in many varieties.

I’m looking forward to making homemade salsa in my new Hamilton Beach Food Processor that Santa brought me. I wish that I lived in California, or some avocado-producing state, to make fresh guacamole from hand-picked avocados, too.

R.I.P CASEY KASEM

Last Sunday, on Father’s Day, radio legend Casey Kasem passed away at the age of 82.

People around the world grew up listening to that distinctive and distinguished voice count down the 40 biggest songs across the U.S. on “American Top 40”.

Casey_Kasem

The show debuted over Independence Day weekend in 1970 and Casey’s last countdown during his first run was on August 6, 1988. (He would return to “American Top 40” from 1998-2003.)

When the show started, it was broadcast on seven stations. At its peak, it was broadcast on more than a thousand stations in the U.S. and in 50 countries around the world.

For those listening to that first show in 1970, Casey opened with “Here we go with the Top 40 hits of the nation this week on “American Top 40”, the best-selling and most-played songs from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Canada to Mexico. This is Casey Kasem in Hollywood, and in the next three hours, we’ll count down the 40 most popular hits in the United States this week, hot off the record charts of “Billboard” magazine…”

Sadly, he gained media attention recently in a very nasty, public dispute between his children and his second wife of almost 34 years, Jean, as he battled Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Here is a blog that I wrote two years ago about how much I loved listening to Casey and how a long distance dedication could go terribly wrong!

“Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”

R.I.P. Casey!

POOR STATE OF POP RADIO

Since we’re talking radio, I have to say that I’m not a fan of Clear Channel Communications’ promotional synergy of pushing a new song by playing it at the top of every hour for a certain period of time.

Madonna-Give-Me-All-Your-Luvin

While that helped Madonna secure her record-extending 38th Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012 with “Give Me All Your Luvin”, along with Britney Spears debuting at #12 last year with “Work Bitch”, and Michael Jackson earning another Top Ten hit this year with “Love Never Felt So Good”, it also dooms the songs.

It’s debatable whether those three songs are worthy of hitting the top of the chart, but constant initial airplay pushes those song to a high debut and then they usually drop off quickly the next week and rarely rebound to a higher chart position on the airplay chart.

Why can’t it be like it used to be when Casey Kasem counted down the hottest songs in the land. When you heard them, you knew you’d hear them during the week on your local radio station because back then a song had to build airplay week to week!

KUDOS TO RICKY MARTIN

To protest Morocco’s antigay laws, Ricky Martin changed the pronoun in his ballad, “She’s All I Ever Had” to “he” while performing at the 13th Mawazine World Rhythms Festival in Rabat, Morocco.

He sang, “It’s the way he makes me feel / It’s the only thing that’s real / It’s the way he understands / He’s my lover, he’s my friend / When I look into his eyes it’s the way I feel inside / Like the man I want to be / He’s all I ever need.”

Homosexuality is still a crime there and just last month, six Moroccan men were convicted and each face up to three years in prison.

This is the original that reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1999.

And, if you’re a Ricky Martin fan, his autobiography, “Me”, is amazing.

Here’s the blog that I wrote about it if you want to know more about it or Ricky.

WAS ANTHONY PERKINS “PSYCHO”?

I just finished reading “Split Image” by Charles Winecoff about the life and death of movie and stage legend Anthony Perkins, who died of AIDS in 1992. The book was published four years after the “Psycho” star’s death.

Split Image

As I was reading the very lengthy book (480 pages), I was so ready for it to end.

I never met Tony Perkins, so I don’t know if he was a shy, introverted, strange man or not. However, I can’t believe that Winecoff spent so much time and effort interviewing people and pulling quotes from Perkins and many of his fellow actors to piece together such an unhappy, unflattering book.

It was as if Winecoff disliked Perkins so much that he took joy in making him look as bad as possible after the actor’s death.

I love reading biographies or books about real events. But, it was hard for me to read about Perkins’ life from someone who didn’t interview the star for the book.

The book did not change how I feel about Perkins since I was named after him, after all! I still think the lanky, 6’2″ actor was gorgeous in the 1950s and 1960s! See for yourself.

The song featured in that video was “How About You” from Perkins’ 1957 album, “Tony Perkins”. He reached #24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1957 with “Moon-Light Swim”.

Beyond his career defining role as serial killer Norman Bates in 1960’s “Psycho” and its three sequels, Perkins was nominated for an Oscar in 1957 and he won the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor Award in 1961.

Anthony Perkins Psycho

I’m glad that Winecoff used this quote from Anthony Perkins as he lay dying that he dictated to his sons:

“There are many who believe this disease is God’s vengeance, but I believe it was sent to teach people how to love and understand and have compassion for each other. I have learned more about love, selflessness, and human understanding from the people I have met in this great adventure in the world of AIDS than I ever did in the cutthroat, competitive world in which I spent my life.”

AN EARLY BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR MYSELF

While I have an amazing celebratory trip coming up in October to usher in my 50th birthday (details are coming soon), I bought myself concert tickets to see my favorite band of all time for the first time.

The band is Erasure and here’s one of their biggest hits in the United States from 1988.

If you’re not all that familiar with the band and would like a crash course in who they are and learn more about me and my younger days, check out the blog I wrote about them.

“I’M A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY”

Tonight, we’re off to Clinton, Iowa, just outside the Quad Cities, to see the “Grits and Glamour Tour” with Lorrie Morgan and Pam Tillis.

Grits Glamour Tour

Since she scored her first country hit in 1988 with “Trainwreck of Emotion”, which reached #20, Lorrie Morgan has amassed 25 hits on the Billboard country charts.

Of those, 14 reached the Top Ten, and three topped the charts: “Five Minutes” (1990), “What Part of No” (1993), and “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” (1995).

“Watch Me” reached #2 on the Billboard Country charts in 1992.

“I’M A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY”

Throughout the 1990s, Pam Tillis scored 22 Top 40 hits on the country chart. Of that great accomplishment, 13 of those songs made the Top Ten and 10 of them making it all the way into the Top 5. (She also had a Top 30 hit with Dolly Parton, “Romeo”).

Her only #1, “Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life)” topped the chart for two weeks in early 1995.

One of my favorite Pam Tillis songs is “Spilled Perfume”, from the “Sweetheart’s Dance” album. It hit #5 on the Billboard Country chart in 1994.

HAPPY PRIDE WEEKEND, CHICAGO PEEPS

It’s pride weekend in Chicago and I want to wish all of my friends there a safe and fun weekend!

pride-martini-collection

It’s been a few years, 2010, I think, since I last celebrate Pride in the big city. So, friends, have a drink or a shot for me!

I want to close out my blog with three “Pride-worthy” videos to kick off the weekend.

The first is a song that I saw performed on television in April 1993 for the “March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation” while I was living in small town Kentucky.

Seeing Rozalla sing “Everybody’s Free” while hundreds of thousands of people just like me making themselves visible was such an incredible feeling. Unfortunately, I can’t find a video from the 1993 “March”, but the song’s message is still the same from the music video.

The second is by the late Sylvester, a legend in the LGBT community.

In 1978, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” was #1 Billboard Dance hit and a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

And, the last video is one of the sexiest and most life-affirming, “be proud” messages I’ve seen in a video by a straight, but not narrow friend of the LGBT community, Kylie Minogue.

I guess the Kylie video is powerful. I had a high school classmate delete me on Facebook when I posted the video a couple of years ago. He said it was part of the moral decay in this country!

THAT’S IT

My friends, whatever your persuasion, I hope you have a fantastic first weekend of summer. Thank you for checking out my random thoughts.
