Random Friday Thoughts — January 20, 2017

It seems like forever since I’ve written a “Random Friday Thoughts”.

While I shared my favorite movies, songs, and albums in blogs in December, I’ve mostly written about the weather lately.

As always, I appreciate you checking out my thoughts.  Feel free to share yours and if we disagree, do it diplomatically and concisely.  I won’t put up with tired rants! 🙂

LAST MENTION (HOPEFULLY)

I did share one more blog about you know who yesterday and that means I’ll be trying very hard not to bash him either.  You guessed it —  I’m not referring to him by name.

If you missed that, click here and it’ll open in another window.

IT’S AN HONOR….

Playing for the president of the United States, regardless of party, would be an honor for any performer.

But, after the decisive 2016 election, singers are catching hell for signing on or skipping this year’s inauguration and parties.

Garth Brooks is facing backlash from some of his conservative fans, but he says his decision not to play the inauguration was because of his world tour.

Brooks says, “We left it up to karma. If Cincinnati goes two weekends instead of one, then of course we are out.”

Strong sales prompted him to add three more shows over that weekend.

PresidentObama

Brooks adds, “I’ll tell you with this whole presidential thing: We got one going out. Pray for him and his family. And for the president going in, pray for him and his family to guide this nation. Let’s stay together.  Love, unity — that’s what it’s all about.”

As Garth sings in his amazing anthem, “We Shall Be Free”.

However, it was the other way around for Jennifer Holliday.  When it was announced that the “Dreamgirls” star was planning on performing, the backlash from her fans — people of color and LGBT — was immediate.

Holliday dropped out and apologized.

jh-apology

While I’m happy for that decision, I’m appalled about a reporte that Holliday and her family received death threats once it was initially announced that she would be performing.

hate

If true, those people are as disgusting as the ones spewing their hate and ignorance before and after the 2016 presidential election!

Disgusting!

…BUT YOU’RE NOT DOING IT “FOR THE COUNTRY”.

While I said “it’s an honor” to play for the president, I’ve actually heard some performers say they do it for the country.

I think that’s stretching it quite a bit.

flag

Our uniformed men and women in the armed forces do what they do for the country!

WHERE IS THE SNOW?

It’s now January 20th and it’s been over a month since we’ve had measurable snow in the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa.

Officially, in the Quad Cities,  in Moline, we’re at the same point we were at last winter at this time on snowfall — 13.8″ (as of Thursday).

winter-snow

Typically, we should be at around 16″ at this point in the winter.

Since Davenport had more snow with the first storm of the season in early December, the total there is up to 16.5″ this winter compared to 11.8″ at this point last winter.

No snow is expected until later next week.

“THE WIDOW”

While we’re only a few weeks into the new year, I’ve already finished two books while walking on the treadmill.

I mostly read autobiographies, biographies, or books about real life events.  Occasionally, I’ll read fiction.

Over the past year, my favorites were “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins and “Dietland” by Sarai Walker.

Dietland

If you’re looking for a thriller with the “Gone Girl”-like twist of who’s telling the truth and what is real and what isn’t, “The Widow” by Fiona Barton is a great book to check out.

widow.jpg

Jeanie is now a widow and is being pursued by journalists to tell her story after her husband Glen is hit by a bus.

But, this isn’t the first time that she felt badgered by the television and print reporters.  The last time, it was mostly about Glen and a crime for which he was charged.

There’s also twists and turns centering around a missing child and internet porn.

“DON’T BREATHE”

This psychological thriller is now out on DVD and it’s definitely worth catching.

Three down on their luck young adults are breaking into houses in Detroit and selling what they steal for money.   Yet, they feel they’re not getting the money they deserve for the stolen merchandise.

So, they decide to target one more person, an Army veteran, who won a settlement from a wealthy family after their daughter killed his only daughter in a car accident.

He appears to be an easy target because he’s blind.  Big mistake!

Let’s just say you’ll never look at a turkey baster the same way again! If your mind is already reeling, it’s not exactly what you’re thinking! 🙂

This thriller was very successful.  It made $155.1 million on a $10 million budget!

GRADE:  A

“LIGHTS OUT”

While “Don’t Breathe” is a psychological thriller and I love those types of crime capers, “Lights Out” is more of a suspenseful, supernatural movie.

It’s like an extended movie version of an episode of “The X-Files”.

A family is left to pick up the pieces after the dad is murdered at his business by something that can only be seen when it’s dark — “lights out”.

His wife, played by Maria Bello, suffers from a mental illness.

She sinks further into depression after her husband’s death and their adolescent son, Martin, is becoming more and more distressed after seeing his mother talk to a third unseen “person” in the room.

Unable to sleep, he falls asleep in school and goes to stay with his grown sister.  We learn that she left home because of her mother’s behavior.

It’s all because of Diana and Diana’s identity drives this movie.

The $5 million movie made close to $149 million and a sequel is in the works,

GRADE:  B

MORE FROM TERESA PALMER

Teresa Palmer is the star of “Lights Out” and she’s phenomenal.

Although movie goers will recognize her from “Warm Bodies”, “I Am Number Four”, “The Grudge 2”, and “Hacksaw Ridge”, I first saw the Australian actress in her incredible second movie, “2:37” from 2006.

If you come across it, it’s definitely worth checking out.

JENNIFER HOLLIDAY

I saw Jennifer Holliday in concert at Market Days in Chicago in 2007.  She was amazing, as usual.

JH.jpg

Most people remember her as Effie White in her Tony Award-winning role on Broadway in “Dreamgirls”.

That show also gave Holliday her only Top 40 hit on the “Billboard Hot 100” chart, “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going”.  It reached #22 in 1982.  (That song also reached #1 on the R&B charts and won her a Grammy Award.)

Holliday has also scored six Top Ten hits on the Billboard Dance charts.

“And I Am Telling You…” hit the Top Ten twice, in 2001 and 2007, but it didn’t chart when the song came out originally in 1982!

She’s also topped the dance chart twice with “No Frills Love” — in 1985 in its original release and again in 1996!

This is my favorite Holliday song!

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Random Friday Thoughts — September 30, 2016

It’s now been a couple of days back at work for me after five days in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ray was at a conference and I went along and spent time with “Mom” (Betty).  It was nice seeing her again since the last time was over a year ago when she was in the Quad Cities.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my random thoughts.

THEY SAID WHAT??? — PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE VERSION

Monday night’s first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was the most watched in history.

84 million people tuned in and this doesn’t include the millions who watched online or at other venues like parties, bars, restaurants, and offices.

This beat out the 1980 debate between President Jimmy Carter and eventual winner Ronald Reagan.  80.6 million watched that debate.

A CNN/ORC poll after Monday night’s showdown showed that Clinton easily won it by a margin of 62%-27%, the third largest win in debate history.

debate

Between Trump snorting like a pig, drinking water like he’d walked through the desert, and constantly saying “wrong” during many of Clinton’s answers and rebuttals and Hillary smiling like a Cheshire Cat because she knew Donald was coming unglued, it was an interesting night.

Here are my favorite soundbites:

Donald:  “I think my strongest asset, maybe by far, is my temperament.  I have a winning temperament.”

Hillary Debate.jpg

Hillary:  “I have a feeling by the end of this debate I am going to be blamed for everything that ever happened.”

Donald:  “Why not?”

Hillary:  “Join the debate by saying more crazy things.”

Donald Debate.jpg

Donald:  (on who’s to blame for the Democratic National Committee security breach.  It could have been Russia or China) “It also could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds.”

hillary-debate

Hillary:  “Donald, I know you live in your own reality.”

Hillary:  “He loves beauty contests, supporting them, and hanging around them.”

BEST TWEET ABOUT THE CANDIDATES

JUST IGNORE HIM — HE’S USED TO IT!

Because most of the people that read or will come across my blog are compassionate and caring, you’ll likely click on the video below (it’s less than a minute and you don’t even need the sound up!)

Vote this November!  It’s important!

CANCER SUCKS

In the past I’ve shared many stories about cancer.  The bottom line is that it sucks.

cancer

While I’ve had a couple of scares that, fortunately, didn’t turn out turn out to be cancer, I did lose my grandfather, my hero, and my father to cancer.

Canadian country music star Brett Kissel, one of my favorites, is raising awareness of the disease on his latest single from his album “Pick Me Up”.

Brett Kissel

He’s also donating the money from “I Didn’t Fall In Love With Your Hair” with Carolyn Dawn Johnson to cancer research in Canada.

What a powerful video!

This single is dedicated to his mother, Brenda, a survivor who’s battled cancer several times and has gone through more than forty surgeries!

You can help out by buying the single here (it’s track 10).  But, let me tell you the entire album is spectacular!

https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/pick-me-up/id1023505720

And, that’s not all.  Entrepreneur, philanthropist, and two-time cancer survivor W. Brett Wilson is matching the sales of the single up to $25,000 through October 28th.

Kissel has a nice run going with eight consecutive Top Ten hits on the Canadian Country music chart and this is looking like it’ll be his ninth!  It moves up eleven this week to #31!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT CARTER!

I want to take a moment to wish my favorite President Jimmy Carter a very happy birthday this weekend.

On Saturday, our 39th U.S. president turns 92 years old.

Jimmy CarterJimmy Carter

I got to visit his presidential museum and library earlier this month in Atlanta, Georgia, and it was amazing seeing all of the history of his long, rewarding life.

President Carter is the second-oldest living president.  George H.W. Bush turned 92-year-old back in June.

FIVE YEARS & COUNTING

It’s five years today!  Happy fifth anniversary Ray and Gretel!

These pictures were taken shortly after it became official in Vander Veer Botanical Park in Davenport, Iowa.

Wedding2

Our wedding posse, oops, party (from left to right:  Ray’s sister Cindy, my “Mom” Betty, Ray, Gretel, me, and my sister Tammy.)

Wedding 1

The first years!

And, if you haven’t seen it before, here’s a compilation video of our wedding reception, which was held the next day in our back yard.

We planned it and decorated all by ourselves!  It was beautiful — even if I say so myself!

While the video is labeled “One Year Anniversary”, it’s now five!

Ray and Gretel, here’s to the next five years!

IN SHOCKING POLITICAL NEWS…

Texas Senator and former presidential wannabe Ted Cruz announced that he’ll be voting for Donald Trump in November.

Also, another former presidential wannabe (and several times loser) Rick Santorum has been appointed to Trump’s Catholic Advisory Council.

SERIES & SEASON FINALES

If you haven’t seen the season finales of “Mr. Robot” and “Aquarius”, skip down until you see olives.  Yes, I said olives. 🙂

spoiler-alert

Season two of “Mr. Robot” is over and while the season was much different than the incredible first season, it was enjoyable.

The season two finale was very bold.  It had some very strong language and confrontations.

Speaking of confrontations, the showdown between E Corp’s Scott Knowles and Tyrell’s wife, Joanna, over the death of Knowles’ dead (and pregnant) wife, Sharon, was literally painful to watch!

joanna

And, the last scene with Elliot, Tyrell, and the phone call with Angela makes me look forward to what’s likely to be a shorter season three in 2017.

GRADE:  B  (Season one — GRADE:  A)

aquarius.jpg

The season two finale of “Aquarius” on NBC with David Duchovny will likely serve as a “series finale”.

For two years, we’ve watched Duchovny as Los Angeles Police Detective Sam Hodiak working his job (the right way and, also, bending the law), sexing up the ladies, and teasing his pretty boy, younger partner Brian Shafe (Grey Damon).

Grey Damon

At the same time, since it’s the late-1960s, we also watched Charles Manson and his “family” terrorize Los Angeles, which as we all know, ended in a savage bloodbath of actress Sharon Tate and four others inside her Hollywood home.

It was a strong season that few people watched and it was an enjoyable two years.

While the show hasn’t been “officially” cancelled, I’m almost certain it won’t be back.

GRADE:  B+  (Season one — GRADE:  B)

WELCOME BACK “HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER”

“How To Get Away With Murder” is back for its third season and the premiere episode proves that show has plenty of life left in it.

However, as was teased at the end of the episode, that’s not the case for a major character.  Someone will die by the end of the season.

Here’s a teaser for the remaining fourteen episodes this season.

You can catch the show Thursday nights on ABC.

DO YOU KNOW HOW OLIVES ARE STUFFED?

Yes, I thought about this the other day and I just had to look it up, so I’m sharing it with you.

I figured that olives were stuffed by humans and machines. I was right.

This is an incredible short video showing the process.

After watching this video, I know it’s a job.  But, could you imagine how monotonous it would be!

PICK HIT

Some of the biggest names in country music, from today to yesteryear, created an instant classic.

To celebrate “The 50th Annual CMA Awards”, CMA brings us “Forever Country”, a single that was produced by CMA Award winner Shane McAnally and features 30 superstars including Reba, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Martina McBride, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Randy Travis, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Trisha Yearwood, Brett Eldredge, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Little Big Town, Kacey Musgraves, and many more.

The song is a medley of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”, and Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again”.

The single was downloaded 93,000 times and streamed 5.7 million times in its first week.  That helped it debut at #1 on the Billboard Country Songs chart.

While this is an achievement that only two other songs have done, it’s only getting limited airplay at country radio.

Don’t even get me started about the current state of country radio!!!!!!!!

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR

So, fall officially arrived a week ago last Thursday.  That evening, at the Moline Walmart, I saw that the garden section was already the Christmas section.

MyFavoriteDecoratingCartoon

So, it’s truly one-stop shopping now.  You can pick up Halloween candy and costumes, buy frozen turkeys and canned cranberry sauce, and shop for your artificial tree and decorations all at the same time!

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

They Said What??? Rick Santorum, Blake Shelton, & Luke Bryan

FORMER REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE RICK SANTORUM

(on Republicans embracing marriage equality):  “I’m sure you could go back and read stories, oh, you know, ‘The Republican party’s going to change. This is the future.’ Obviously that didn’t happen.  I think you’re going to see the same stories written now and it’s not going to happen. The Republican Party’s not going to change on this issue. In my opinion it would be suicidal if it did.”

MORE SANTORUM

(on how the Supreme Court may rule on the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8):  “I think you’ll see, hopefully, a chastened Supreme Court is not going to make the same mistake in the (current) cases as they did in Roe v. Wade.  I’m hopeful the Supreme Court learned its lesson about trying to predict where the American public is going on issues and trying to find rights in the Constitution that sit with the fancy of the day.”

ACTOR JEREMY IRONS

(clarifying his comment, “Could a father not marry his son?” when recently asked about allowing same-sex marriage):  “Perhaps rather too flippantly I flew the kite of an example of the legal quagmire that might occur if same sex marriage entered the statute books, by raising the possibility of future marriage between same sex family members for tax reasons.”

COUNTY SINGER BLAKE SHELTON

(about his co-host of the “Academy of Country Music Awards, Luke Bryan’s sprayed-on tight jeans):  “How about a shout out to the Sherwin-Williams company for spray painting Luke’s jeans on for us tonight.  You know what Motel 6 and Luke’s jeans have in common?  There’s no ballroom.”

COUNTRY SINGER LUKE BRYAN

(response about Blake Shelton’s jeans):  “Blake’s jeans are like buying something on credit…nothing up front. What size is that? Extra empty?

FREE AGENT NFL SAFETY KERRY RHODES

(responding to a photo of him on vacation with his arm another man):  I am not gay.  The shots were taken during a past vacation in a casual environment with my entire business team.”

MORE RHODES

(about professional athletes coming out):  “I know a lot of people are recently talking about atheletes struggling to come out to their fans right now, and I support them, as well as with those individuals comfort.”

They Said What??? Chick-fil-A, Rick Santorum, Ann Coulter, Aziz Ansari, & Tom Hanks

FORMER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE RICK SANTORUM

“One of my speeches, I went to Iowa. And immediately when I announced that I was going to Iowa, everyone started, well, is he running for president?  Well I said, yeah, that’s the logical thing for someone who lost their last Senate race in 2006 by the largest margin of any incumbent in 40 years.  Sure, run for president! That makes all the sense in the world!”

CHAMBLEE, GEORGIA CHICK-fil-A ADVERTISEMENT

“Only a fruitcake wouldn’t love our party trays.”

STEVE ROBINSON, CHICK-fil-A EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF MARKETING OFFICE

“This is an advertisement that a locally owned and operated restaurant has been using for the past five years to promote Chick-fil-A’s catering options during the holidays.  It was simply a play on words referring to the traditional holiday food, and the restaurant had no intention of offending anyone whatsoever. We regret the flier may have been taken out of context.”

BEEFCAKE ACTOR MARIO LOPEZ

(in a tweet that ticked off gay activists):  “Why does it seem like I always crave Chick-fil-A on Sundays?? #Frustrating.”

REPUBLICAN MOUTHPIECE ANN COULTER

(tweeted):  “Last Thursday was national ‘coming out’ day. This Monday is national ‘disown your son’ day.”

GLAAD, THE GAY AND LESBIAN ALLIANCE AGAINST DEFAMATION

(acknowledging that Coulter’s words were meant to be a joke):  “she is not really taken seriously in any context anyway.”

ROCK STAR BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

“Right now, there is a fight going on to help make this a fairer and more equitable nation. For me, President Obama is our best choice to get us and keep us moving in the right direction.”

MITT ROMNEY ADVISER BAY BUCHANAN

“Governor Romney also believes, consistent with the 10th Amendment, that it should be left to the states to decide whether to grant same-sex couples certain benefits, such as hospital visitation rights and the ability to adopt children.”

OSCAR WINNER TOM HANKS

(after dropping the “f-bomb” on “Good Morning America”):  “Man oh man, I’m sorry.  I have never done that before. I want to apologize to the kids in America that are watching this right now, and let me say next time on the show there will be a seven-second delay.”

RYAN MURPHY, “THE NEW NORMAL” AND “GLEE” CREATOR

(tweet):  “Guess who’s coming on The New Normal as Bryan’s [Andrew Rannells] sexy ex-boyfriend? The one and only Matt Bomer!!!”

“PARKS AND RECREATION” STAR AZIZ ANSARI

“At this point, why is anyone against gay marriage?” Ansari asked Kimmel. “You know you’re going to lose. You know you’re on the wrong side of things. These are the same people that didn’t want women to vote, that didn’t want black guys to play football. What was the last thing they were opposed to? Interracial relationships? Look, if you’re opposed to interracial relationships, guess what: I’m f***ing white girls, there’s nothing you can do about it!”

CALIFORNIA LT. GOVERNOR & FORMER SAN FRANSISCO MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM

(about Vice President wannabe Paul Ryan):  “I mean this is a guy who voted against Matthew Shepard and the Hate Crimes law. This is a guy who voted against gay and lesbian couples adopting.  What’s so disappointing about Ryan is the generational disappointment. He’s roughly my age, and I have a lot of Republican friends my age and they’ve just moved on, they’ve evolved on these issues. But Ryan hasn’t, and that’s so extraordinarily disappointing. If he represents a generational shift in the Republican Party, that scares the hell out of me. That’s a generational shift backwards, from my perspective, not a leap forward. So a Romney presidency concerns me also because of these federal court appointees. I really fear for that even more broadly speaking. Not just the marriage issue, but the rights of gay and lesbian Americans.”

Anthony

They Said What??? Pat Robertson, Paul Ryan, Rick Santorum, Dolly Parton, & Lady Gaga

MEGADEATH LEAD SINGER  DAVE MUSTAINE

(at a Singapore concert):  “Back in my country, my president is trying to pass a gun ban.  So he’s staging all of these murders, like the Fast and Furious thing down at the border and Aurora, Colorado, all the people that were killed there. And now the beautiful people at the Sikh temple.  I don’t know where I’m gonna live if America keeps going the way it’s going because it looks like it’s turning into Nazi America.”

MAXIM SHEVCHENKO OF THE MOSCOW TIMES

“But enough about Madonna. She is only a stage prop, a vivid symbol of everything superficial, deceitful and hateful that the West exhibits toward Russia.

PAT ROBERTSON, THE “700 CLUB” HOST AND RELIGIOUS RIGHT MOUTHPIECE

“I defy these homosexuals to bring forth a baby from that part of the anatomy which they concentrate on.  When that happens, I will change everything I’m saying. Until that happens, I wish those demonstrators would shut their mouth.”

“LESS THAN ZERO” AUTHOR BRET EASTON ELLIS

“Okay I’ll say it. Matt Bomer isn’t right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay. He’s great for other roles but this is too big a game.”

SINGER/ACTRESS DOLLY PARTON

“I have a lot of gay fans because they know that I just accept people as they are. That’s not my place to judge. I ain’t God and I ain’t runnin’ for office. But I was proud to be part of that. It makes you feel good.”

UNION SPOKESPERSON DARYA DEDOVA

(who is suing Madonna for $10.5 million after her show in Russia last week)”  “She insulted the believers’ feelings, she promoted homosexuality where there were children at the concert and this if forbidden in St. Petersburg.  We, the residents of cultural capital, suffered a colossal moral damage.”

CHAD GRIFFIN, HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN PRESIDENT

“Ryan’s record of voting against fairness, dignity and equality is out of touch with the majority of Americans and a fast growing majority of Republicans.  LGBT Americans need leadership that will continue to fight for their rights to protect their families, marry the person they love, and enjoy equal protections under the law.”

PAUL RYAN, MITT ROMNEY’S CHOICE FOR VICE-PRESIDENT

“Our rights come from nature and God, not from government.”

RICK SANTORUM, FAILED REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT

“In addition to Congressman Ryan’s stellar fiscal conservative positions, he is indeed a full-spectrum conservative.  He is solidly pro-life, pro-family, and will be an advocate for our military and our national security priorities.”

LADY GAGA

“The past year was a challenge, and I’m so happy to have my spirit back. I felt in chains at times.  There was of course the incessant dragging of the most important single of my career in dead-beaten-horse-mud. Then there were all the personal moments. Betrayed by lifelong friends, mentors I’ve had for years suddenly taking advantage of me, and a massive struggles with my body image.”

WHITE HOUSE SPOKESPERSON SHIN INOUYE

“The President believes the Boy Scouts is a valuable organization that has helped educate and build character in American boys for more than a century.  He also opposes discrimination in all forms, and as such opposes this policy that discriminates on basis of sexual orientation.”

Anthony

They Said What??? Cher, Caroline Kennedy, Shannon Doherty, Rick Santorum, & President Obama

ACTRESS/SINGER CHER

“If Romney gets elected I don’t know if i can breathe same air as Him & his Right Wing Racist Homophobic Women Hating Tea Bagger Masters”

NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR BEV PERDUE

(on the passage of “Amendment One”):  “People around the country are watching us, and they’re really confused to have been such a progressive, forward-thinking, economically driven state that invested in education and that stood up for the civil rights people including the civil rights marches back in the ’50s and ’60s and ’70s.  Folks are saying ‘What in the world is going on with North Carolina?’ We look like Mississippi.”

ACTRESS SHANNON DOHERTY

“I don’t want anyone to think that I’m a bitch. We can all be bitches — Mother Theresa probably had a moment when she got a little bitchy. [laughs]. Everybody has their moments. It’s fricking life! And it’s not that big of a deal.”

MORE SHANNON DOHERTY

“Two men, two women should be able to get married. It’s not about your sex, it’s about love and commitment. No state has the right to tell someone, “No, this is not legal in the eyes of the state.” That is the most ridiculous statement in the world when you then go and preach that this is a free country. That is mind boggling to me. And again, this takes me back to hate and judgement. I don’t understand it. I am a Southern Baptist girl and I’m sure some people would cringe at my words but anyone can go and pick up the Bible where it says not to judge! It says that! And yet people are judging. And people saying gay marriage is not right and shouldn’t be legal — that’s a judgement. It’s so frustrating because it feels to me like we take one step forward and two steps backwards all the time. We’re supposedly this progressive country and I’d like to see where the progression is, personally.”

RON BROWN, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRAKSA-LINCOLN FOOTBALL COACH

“Not all of my players have agreed with the Bible’s views. One example, of many, would be those choosing heterosexual sex outside of marriage. Though the Bible teaches this as sin, I haven’t penalized them with playing time or discrimination of any sort. Because I love them, I’ve invested in them even outside of football and gently asked them to consider God’s view on it. If I coached a gay player, because the Bible says homosexuality is a sin, I would do the same. If he didn’t agree, I wouldn’t penalize him with playing time or any form of discrimination. I have and will embrace every player I coach, gay or straight … but I won’t embrace a legal policy that supports a lifestyle that God calls sin.”

RICK SANTORUM, FORMER REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL WANNABE

“Above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated.  It will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. Gov. Romney will be that nominee and he has my endorsement and support to win this the most critical election of our lifetime.”

CAROLINE KENNEDY, DAUGHTER OF PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY

“There are few things in life more important than being able to marry and build a family with the person you love.  This fundamental right should be available to all Americans, including gay and lesbian couples. In our democracy we are fortunate to have elected officials at all levels of government, and courageous jurists who have put their careers on the line, to uphold the promise of equality that is as old as our Constitution, and I hope that many more will follow their example.”
CHAD GRIFFIN, INCOMING PRESIDENT, HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN

(about Vice President Joe Biden’s support of marriage equality):  “Only in Washington and in politics could someone attempt to parse the words of what the vice president of the United States said on Meet the Press.  His words speak for themselves — and they send an incredibly important message outside Washington to the young LGBT teenager hearing the vice president of the United States talk about his belief in marriage equality and the fact that he or she can grow up and have the same dreams and aspirations as their friends, their colleagues, their parents.”

JAY CARNEY, WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY

“I have no updates on the president’s personal views.  What the vice president said yesterday was to make the same point that the president has made previously, that committed and loving same-sex couples deserve the same rights and protections enjoyed by all Americans.”

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredible committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

R. CLARKE COOPER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS

“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous.”

A Waste of Glitter or Effective Activism?

Got glitter, will travel.  The latest act of protest here in the United States is glitter bombing.  What is that you may ask?

Glitter bombing is when activists throw glitter on people at public events.  It’s been mostly directed at Republican candidates that oppose marriage equality.

While prosecution is unlikely without proof of intent to injure, Mark R. Vernazza, a legal associate at Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge LLP in Boston, Massachusetts, says it’s “technically assault and battery”.

Womanizer Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista were glitter bombed at a Minneapolis book signing and Republican presidential candidate losers Tim Pawlenty and Michele Bachmann got the same treatment — Pawlenty at a book signing in San Francisco and it happened to Bachmann in Minneapolis.  No way!

There’s so much disgust with hater Rick Santorum that he’s been glitter bombed twice in just the past few days.  It happened at his South Carolina headquarters this past weekend, and, again, Monday in Lady Lake, Florida.

Others that have been glitter bombed were Marcus Bachmann, husband of Michele, at his medical practice, the anti-marriage equality group “Minnesota for Marriage” at the Minnesota State Fair, political consultant Karl Rove, and Minnesota Congressman Erik Paulson.

There’s definitely a lot of protest against those Minnesota politicians because they definitely come across as very homophobic.

It isn’t always directed at Republican candidates.  Anti-abortion activist and Democratic party presidential candidate Randall Terry was glitter bombed by fellow candidate Vermin Supreme at a forum this past December.

And, social commentator and sex advice columnist Dan Savage was glitter bombed in Eugene, Oregon, Irvine, California, and in Vancouver, British Columbia because of his transphobic (negative attitudes and feelings toward transgendered men and women) comments.

What do I think of it?  Well, it’s radical and definitely gets attention.  However, if you’re going to waste good glitter, at least hit your target!!

Now, if I thought talking to these haters would be effective, then I would go that route.  But, we know you make a passionate plea to Santorum and Bachmann, the reply you get is something like, “you have equal rights in America if its a marriage between a man and a woman”.  But, I asked you a question about the economy!

With that being said, you can get a package of 8 glitter flip-top shakers at Walgreen’s for only $3.99.
