Random Friday Thoughts — September 29, 2023

Nine months of the year are almost behind us and the spooky, the thankfully tasty, and the merry and bright seasons are ahead of us.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my random thoughts this week.

HAPPY FALL FROM MISS XANADU

Crazy pug Xanadu is 9-months-old now and up to 17 pounds! She’s definitely taking in the sights of autumn.

And, she’s a total garbage mouth and loves the crunch of half-eaten acorns left behind by squirrels.

At first, I didn’t pay too much attention to her munching them — other than the awkward poop since they don’t break down.

However, after she got sick and vomited the other night, I did my research and learned that acorns are toxic to dogs!

Acorn poisoning will first cause vomiting and can lead to kidney and liver damage. And, in rare cases, death!

The more you know!

BOOK BANS

PEN America reports that book bans were up 33% across the United States during the 2022-23 school year compared to 2021-22.

And, it should come as no shock that Florida leads the U.S. at 40%. Texas is in second place in book bans. (Other states in the top five: Missouri, Utah, and South Carolina.)

The largest group of targeted books are those with LGBTQ+ themes and from queer authors.

People, if you don’t want to read them, move on and entertain yourself!

HOMOPHOBIA & COUNTRY MUSIC (SHOCKER!)

Gay country singer Adam Mac recently dropped out of the Logan County Tobacco and Heritage Festival in his hometown of Russellville, Kentucky.

His reasoning — he heard that board members were “concerned” he’d be “promoting homosexuality” while performing.

Since then, several friends of the LGBTQ+ community in country music have come out in support of Adam Mac including Maren Morris and Kelsea Ballerini, along with queer singers Chely Wright and Brandi Clark.

While they may have contacted Adam Mac personally, no male country music star has publicly supported him!

For the record, I didn’t know of him before this controversy. But, I’m going to give him a listen now — just because.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRESIDENT CARTER

On Sunday, my idol, President Jimmy Carter turns 99-years-old.

For anyone, turning 99 is remarkable. It’s even more so for President Carter because in February, he entered home hospice after a series of short hospital stays.

In the past seven months, he and his wife, Rosalynn, who is living with dementia, at age 96, have stayed out of sight.

However, they made a surprise visit last weekend at the Plains Peanut Festival, where they live!

Also, President Carter is the oldest living president and he and his wife, Rosalynn, have been married for now over 77 years, making them the longest-wed presidential couple.

CRAZY PUG LOVES HELPING

Back in August, Sophia, a colleague at work, left to pursue another career opportunities and I baked her a peanut butter-chocolate ganache cheesecake. It was rather tasty!

Well, pug Xanadu loved helping with the pre-wash cycle. Ironically, I didn’t add the music (Dead or Alive) to the video.

It was playing in the background, but worked well with her madness of licking the spatula! 🙂

“WHAT HE DIDN’T DO”

I started listening to country music some after coming across Cole Swindell’s “Drinkaby” earlier this year.

This Carly Pearce song caught my attention and it’s one of my favorites now.

On March 27, 2023, it reached number one on the Mediabase chart, becoming the first woman in 80 weeks to top the country radio charts with a solo track.

Some believe that the song might be about her ex-husband, country singer Michael Ray.

JUST SAYING

For Carly Pearce, her man was left for what he didn’t do.

For some (or many), it’s what “he did”!

“TENSION” BY KYLIE MINOGUE

As you know, I’ve been excited for months about the release of Kylie Minogue’s 16th studio album, “Tension”, that came out last Friday.

I bought the 14-song deluxe version and it’s an incredible follow-up to her 2020 masterpiece, “Disco”!

As much as I enjoy “Padam Padam” and “Tension”, the first two singles, and both are perfect choices, my favorite song on the album is “Hold On To Now”.

I expect this to be the third single.

Another standout is “10 Out of 10” with Oliver Heldens. It was released as a teaser before “Padam Padam” was chosen as the first single.

And, “Vegas High” is superb! (If only I had tickets to see one of her 20 shows at the Venetian in Vegas!)

While every song on the album is solid, my other favorites are: “Things We Do for Love”, “Story”, “One More Time”, and “Green Light”.

Of the three extra songs on the deluxe version, “Love Train” is my favorite.

“THE SUSPECT”

I came across this five episode-one season British police procedural television series and it was enjoyable.

Clinical psychologist Joe O’Loughlin (Aidan Turner) is called in to assist police after a woman was found dead in a cemetery from 21 self-inflicted stab wounds.

As the show progresses, O’Loughlin becomes a suspect in the murder.

GRADE: B+

“JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL”

“Justified” ran for six seasons on FX (2010-2015).

I binge watched in early 2021 and loved it, especially Timothy Olyphant.

It’s tells the story of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Olyphant) having to go back to his home state of Kentucky in the Appalachian Mountains as punishment for shooting a Miami thug in a questionable manner. Givens has his own set of justice that doesn’t set well with his bosses!

The series returned for eight episodes this summer with Olyphant returning as Givens.

He left Kentucky to raise his daughter in Miami, but finds himself in Detroit.

He’s looking for The Oklahoma Wildman, Clement Mansell, played by the oh so tall and oh so delicious Boyd Holbrook.

His favorite choice of dress — a kimono and tighty whities!

Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”) brought some star power to the cast and that definitely help balance out the huge mistake of having Olyphant’s real-life daughter play his character’s daughter in a few episodes!

MORE HENRY KISSINGER

Last week, I started sharing things I learned from Walter Isaacson’s 1992 look at the incredible life and career of President Richard Nixon’s Secretary of State and National Security Advisory Henry Kissinger.

Here are a few more:

When Kissinger entered government in 1969 to the time he left in 1977, his weight ballooned from 155 to 215 pounds. He loved junk food and his diet consisted of “sausages, bratwurst, eggs, cream, fried onion rings, and meat loaf”.

And, when I read biographies and autobiographies, I love hearing about real things, like what these people eat and enjoy in life. And, how lavish they live.

When Kissinger retired from government work after President Carter moved into the White House in 1977, he and his wife bought a four-bedroom duplex in Manhattan. While very impressive, what blew me away is that the dining room could seat 40 people at four large round tables!

And, finally, U.S. Democratic Senator from New York Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who worked with Kissinger at Harvard and in the Nixon White House, often repeated, “You do not understand. Henry does not lie because it is in his interest. He lies because it is in his nature.” And, because of his conspiratorial nature, Moynihan says he “helped bring on” Watergate.

ON A BRIGHTER SIDE — KISSINGER’S WIT & HUMOR

Isaacson did share several incidents of Kissinger’s humor. Here’s one:

After President-elect Carter won the 1976 election and was getting ready to move into the White House, Kissinger headed off to Brussels for a NATO meeting.

A reporter asked him, “Can you tell me what you consider to be your greatest success and your greatest failure?”. Kissinger replied, “I don’t quite understand your second point.”

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Grab Your Popcorn — My Favorite Movies of 2022

The new year is here and awards season is underway. So far, I’ve only seen a few of the frontrunners that are winning and are likely to become Oscar contenders!

I saw one movie in the theaters this past year and the refreshments were a disappointment. Pre-pandemic, AMC Theaters gave a bucket for a large popcorn and this time it was a small bag!

I hope the attendant was confused. I’ll give it another try in 2023.

There were two movies I wanted to see in 2022, but I haven’t yet. “Spoiler Alert” didn’t play in my city and I didn’t get around to seeing “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. So, maybe they’ll be on next year’s list if they’re good!

Before we begin this year’s countdown, this was my favorite movie I saw in 2021. I’ve now watched “Promising Young Woman” three times!

The least favorite movie I saw in 2022 was “Licorice Pizza”. After the first hour, I was bored to death and stopped watching.

Here are the movies that just missed out on my countdown: #26 “Death on the Nile”; #25 “Umma”; #24 “Nightmare Alley”; #23 “Belfast”; #22 “Honk For Jesus: Save Your Soul”; and #21 “They/Them”.

Now let’s begin the Top Twenty countdown!

Oh, one final note: Jessica Chastain is in three of my favorite movies I saw in 2022!

BOX OFFICE: $2.7 MILLION

“GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE”

And, before we get to my favorite movie I watched in 2022, here’s an extra!

A tribute to Olivia Newton-John, who passed away in August 2022, at the age of 73, after a lengthy cancer fight.

Yes, the movie, “Xanadu”, is a little out there, but it’s now a cult favorite. And, this song is one my all-time favorites!

“HOUSE OF GUCCI”

BOX OFFICE: $153.3 MILLION

Yes, Gaga was robbed of not getting an Oscar nomination for this!

What was your favorite movie you saw in 2022?

Random Friday Thoughts — May 27, 2022

The weekend is here and it’s Memorial Day weekend! Thank you for taking the time to check out my random thoughts.

Some of you have a three-day weekend, so enjoy the “unofficial” start to the summer season.

MEMORIAL DAY

However, let’s not forget the reason for this federal holiday — to mourn the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the armed services.

Memorial Day used to be called “Decoration Day”. From 1868 until 1970, it was on May 30th, but since 1971, the holiday has been on the last Monday in May.

THE SLAP HEARD (almost) AROUND THE WORLD!

I was in Costa Rica during the Oscars and I wasn’t watching.

The next day my sister told me about the drama of Will Smith walking up on the stage and slapping the hell of out of comedian Chris Rock after he made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith!

And, two months later, I still haven’t watched it. However, I’ve heard ALL of the follow-up stories and I’m over it!

Of the Best Actor nominees, I’ve seen three of the performances and I think Smith deserved the win (I still haven’t seen Javier Bardem in “Being the Ricardos” and Denzel Washington in “The Tragedy of Macbeth”.)

Do I think the Academy should take back his Oscar? NO. If they want to ban him from attending future Oscar ceremonies, so be it.

The bottom line is Chris Rock is a comedian (let me stress “comedian” because I saw his lackluster acting performance in the fourth season of “Fargo”) and comedians make rude comments about people. It’s just what they do.

Was Will Smith wrong slapping him in front of millions of people across the world? YES!

Does Smith deserve to lose acting jobs because of his actions? Let me simplify Isaac Newton’s third law — for every action, there’s a reaction.

So, Will, deal with it!

AND, THE REAL SMACKDOWN!!!

“It’s on you!”

Your opinion: O’Rourke out of line? Or, just pointing the honest truth?

FOR THE RECORD

Texas Governor Greg Abbott after the Uvalde school shooting that left, at least, 21 dead: “never again”.

Since he took office in January 2015, there have been six mass shootings in Texas!

AND, THIS…

NBC News: Governor Abbott says the Uvalde school shooter had a “mental health challenge” and the state needed to “do a better job with mental health” — yet in April he slashed $211 million from the department that oversees mental health programs.

I’ll now get off my soap box!

“PAM & TOMMY”

I’m probably one of the few across the world that never saw the scandalous Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape back in the 1990s when it blew up the internet. (Okay, I didn’t even have the internet in 1995. That’s probably the reason.)

However, I finally got around to watching the eight episode Hulu original series with Lily James and Sebastian Stan.

Both were amazing in their roles and they could earn Emmy nominations next month.

“Pam & Tommy” was great when it focused on Pam.

It’s likely that many creative liberties were taken in the series. But, if only a portion of the degradation Pam went through in the deposition happened, those lawyers were appalling!

Who cares if she had posed for magazines and made a fortune running on the beach in a bathing suit on “Baywatch”? It was shameful!

In this series, Tommy Lee was very annoying and unlikeable. If he’s like that in real life, yikes!

Whether you approve of people recording or photographing intimate or sexual moments or not, Pam & Tommy Lee were victims of having their private moments exposed to the world.

GRADE: C+

P.S. In full disclosure, after watching the series, I MAY (or may not) have done a Google search and saw the images!

“FINALLY ENOUGH LOVE”

On August 19, 2022, three days after legendary music icon Madonna turns 64, she’s giving fans a birthday present. (Okay, it’ll cost us!)

Madonna is the only artist in music history to score 50 #1 hits on a single Billboard chart — hers is on the Dance Club Songs.

The 50-track, three disc collection, “Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones” is a 40-year retrospective and is remastered with some remixed songs.

“Frozen” is listed as “(Extended Club Mix Edit) [2022 Remaster]”. Please, please, please let it be this new collaboration with Sickick.

Madonna recorded new vocals for the track and it includes a brand-new verse “remaking the iconic single into an ecstatic trap collaboration”.

You’ve just got to see and listen to this new version!

“DR. DEATH”

This eight episode, 2021 Peacock original series, was great and is terrifying because it’s based on a real case!

Joshua Jackson plays Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a young and brilliant doctor in Dallas building a thriving neurosurgery practice.

All of sudden, patients coming in for routine, yet complex, spinal surgeries begin leaving his operating room dead or permanently disabled.

As the victim count rises, two other doctors, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), set out to stop Duntsch with the help of Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb).

“Dr. Death” was nominated for three Critics’ Choice Award — the series for Best Limited Series, Jackson for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television, and Slater for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

All three may get Emmy nominations this July!

I’ve gone 57 years without any surgeries (other than my wisdom teeth pulled) and after seeing this series, I hope I never have to have a surgery!

GRADE: B

“THE REACH OF A CHEF”

Subtitled “Beyond the Kitchen”, this is Michael Ruhlman 2006 follow-up to “The Making of a Chef” (1997) and “The Soul of a Chef” (2000).

In February 2021, I featured several insights from his phenomenal 2017 book, “Grocery: The Buying and Selling of Food in America”.

Here are a few interesting notes from “The Reach of a Chef: Beyond the Kitchen”:

  • While good for the chef and culinary business, Tim Ryan, head of the Culinary Institute of America says this about celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, “I also often hear chefs criticize Emeril’s culinary techniques, but television is entertainment… I like Emeril and respect him. I do wish that he could move away throwing raw spices on his plates”.
  • And, Ryan adds, “Anyway, it could be worse — he could be screaming profanities at someone, or acting unprofessional, and thankfully Emeril has never done that.” Hello Gordon Ramsey! 🙂
  • When Emeril Lagasse was starting out in television, he would fly to New York from New Orleans and tape as many as seven episodes a day at $300 each.
  • As he became famous, the critics’ (chefs and writers) claws came out. Lagasse says, “Everybody’s so critical today. Nobody criticized Julia [Child] for dropping swordfish on the floor and then picking it up, brushing it, and continuing… These days you’ve got the chicken police, the frog legs police, hamster police, they’re coming after you.”

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Random Friday Thoughts — March 11, 2022

The weekend is almost here and I hope you have fun plans or, at least, be able to chill out and relax.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my random thoughts. If we disagree, that’s fine. Just do it diplomatically!

RUSSIA: CANCELLED!

As the conflict and tragedy rages on in Ukraine after the invasion by Russia, the world continues to speak out and governments are waging their disapproval toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Economic sanctions are in place and they should be. Anything that may hurt the aggressive Russian behavior should be mounted by world leaders.

However, with a country as vast as Russia, it won’t do much to quickly end the conflict. History proves that. It’s the people of the country that suffer more from them and the Russian people are already suffering.

In Russia, 13% of the population lives in poverty (which is similar to the U.S.). However, in Russia, the top 1% controls about 70% of the nation’s wealth. In the U.S., the top 1% have about 32% of the wealth.

I can guarantee that Putin is still living on caviar, champagne, and all of the exotic riches that money can buy.

But, businesses across the world and here in the U.S. are cancelling Russia.

Gate 1 Travel, a company that I love and have used many times, has cancelled all tours and cruises to Russia in 2022.

And, some stores are pulling Russian vodka from its shelves and some restaurants and bars are pouring out their vodkas made in Russia.

Stoli is the leading Russian vodka.

While it won’t make much difference in the scheme of things, it’s the principle behind it.

Less than 1% of vodka consumed in the U.S. is from Russia. More than half of all vodka drank in the U.S. is made here! (CNN)

Go Tito’s and Smirnoff! This one is my favorite!

The Distilled Spirits Council reports that Russian-made vodka only makes up a very small percentage of the roughly $7 billion in annual vodka sales.

NO TREATS FOR YOU, RUSSIA (FOR NOW)!

This week, Coke, PepsiCo, McDonald’s, and Starbucks announced it will temporarily suspend sales of their products in Russia during Putin’s aggression toward Ukraine.

CNN reports that at the end of 2021, there were 847 McDonald’s in Russia (108 more in Ukraine) and 84% are operated by the company. The others are run by franchise owners.

Starbucks says it’s not selling any of its products to Russia and has almost 2,000 employees in the country.

PepsiCo will stop selling sodas in Russia, but will continue selling its baby food, baby formula, milk, and other dairy options.

Russia makes up about 4% of Pepsi’s annual revenue compared to 1%-2% for Coke.

Yum Brands, which owns KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell are making similar decisions.

PEACE!

EXCITED ABOUT THIS MINISERIES

Since I don’t have Showtime, I won’t see it for a while, but I’m very excited about the series, “The First Lady”.

It’s so incredible that two of my favorite actresses, Gillian Anderson and Viola Davis, are in the series and I love Michelle Pfeiffer, too!

Gillian plays Eleanor Roosevelt, Viola portrays Michelle Obama, and Michelle is Betty Ford!

“The First Lady” will premiere on Showtime on April 17, 2022.

“BETTY FORD: CANDOR AND COURAGE IN THE WHITE HOUSE”

John Robert Greene’s 2004 book in the “Modern First Ladies” series was a fascinating read. I just love reading book after book about this fascinating woman!

Here are some of the takeaways from this book:

Her mother, Hortense Bloomer, was very strict. When Betty was a child, like most kids, she loved to snack between meals. Her mother hung a “Please Do Not Feed This Child” sign on her daughter!

When President Richard Nixon offered Gerald Ford the vice presidency, Ford told him that didn’t want to be the Republican nominee for President in 1976 because he had told Betty he would retire from politics in 1977. Nixon replied, “Well, that’s good, because John Connally is my choice for 1976.”

One thing I learned from the book was that Martin Luther King Jr.’s mother, Alberta Williams King, was shot and killed inside the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta by 23-year-old Marcus Wayne Chenault, a Black Hebrew Israelite, in June 1974 — just six years after her son was assassinated in Memphis in 1968. Georgia Governor and future President Jimmy Carter made the arrangements for Betty Ford to attend the funeral!

About her recovery from alcohol abuse, Betty Ford wanted people to know it’d always be a struggle. She said, “the disease is alcoholISm, not alcoholWASism.” (Notice IS and WAS!)

KING RICHARD”

This movie, about how Richard Williams shaped the careers of his two daughters, Venus and Serena, to become two of the best tennis players ever, was compelling.

It’s nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Will Smith), and Best Supporting Actress (Aunjanue Ellis).

Smith has already won the honor from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild and he deserved it!

GRADE: A-

THE LOST DAUGHTER”

Oscar and Emmy Award winner Olivia Colman leads a stellar cast in this Maggie Gyllenhaal-directed drama.

While on holiday in Greece, Leda (Colman) has to come to terms with her earlier life and how she raised her two daughters after befriending a young mother (Dakota Johnson), who’s struggling to raise her own little girl.

The movie definitely turns edgy and very psychological when uneasiness creeps in from a taunting group of young men.

This was my 5th favorite movie I saw in 2021.

GRADE: A

SPENCER”

This movie is about one particular period of the late Princess Diana’s life. It’s Christmas 1991 and Diana is torn over wanting to divorce Prince Charles and leave the royal family.

The movie was enjoyable, but the best part is the performance of Kristen Stewart as Diana.

The role earned her a Best Actress Oscar and Critics’ Choice Movie Award nomination, which are both still pending. She also got a Golden Globe nomination and she won the Hollywood Critics Association Award.

It was my 6th favorite movie of 2021.

GRADE: A-

“PIG”

Never in a million years did I think I’d outright love a Nicolas Cage movie. Okay, even WATCH a Nicolas Cage movie!

But, this one caught my attention and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Cage plays Robin Feld, a haggard man living in the woods, who earns money foraging and harvesting expensive truffles. When he’s beaten and has his pig kidnapped, Feld goes all “John Wick” to find the pig.

That’s when you learn his backstory.

The movie made my Top 20 list of favorite movies I saw in 2021 (#19)! And, Cage is nominated in the Best Actor category for a Critics’ Choice Movie Award!

GRADE: B

GEORGE WASHINGTON

Here are some interesting things I learned about our first President George Washington from authors James MacGregor Burns and Susan Dunn’s 2004 book in the “The American Presidents” series:

  • Incredibly, Washington would trade some of his slaves for rum, molasses, and limes. WOW! Seriously, a man’s worth to him was nothing more than a little food and drink???
  • And, he supplied his slaves with little: “scant clothing, few blankets, perfunctory medical care”.
  • Even as he was winning the Revolutionary War as commander in chief, he was still a rude and condescending man. He confided to his friends that the army was comprised of “an exceedingly dirty and nasty people”.
  • In his second term as president, in the summer of 1796, at the age of 64, Washington decided he would not seek a third term that fall. He was already losing his sight and his hearing and was showing signs of major memory loss.
  • While he never spoke out against slavery in public since his slaves were instrumental in making him a very wealthy man, he left instructions to free his slaves upon his death or the death of his wife, Martha, if she outlived him.

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!
