Random Friday Thoughts — January 12, 2018

It’s a new year and I’m posting my first official “Random Friday Thoughts” of 2018.

2018 RFT

I hope you had a happy holiday season and are looking forward to great things over the next twelve months.

GLAD “WINTER BREAK” IS OVER

It’s not because 24-hour Christmas music is no longer being played or that people are taking down their trees and decorations.  I miss that!

I’m glad “winter break” is over so my favorite television shows return.

I want my “How To Get Away With Murder”, “Madam Secretary”, “The Good Doctor”, and “The Brave”.

On, “Murder”, I’m ready to see how the bloody elevator scene turns out!

911

When “The Walking Dead” returns in February for the final eight episodes of this season, I’m excited for another reason.

While I want to see the original character revealed to have been bitten by a walker die…

FTWD Christmas

… the real reason is that I want this dreadful season to end so “Fear The Walking Dead” will return for its fourth season!

“MADAM SECRETARY”

I got a pleasant surprise on the latest episode of “Madam Secretary” with Jayne Atkinson playing Vice President Teresa Hurst!

Needless to say, there’s tension between her and Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Tea Leoni).

Jayne

If Atkinson looks familiar, she was Secretary of State Catherine Durant under President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) on “House of Cards”!

spoiler_alert_300_w2

When we last saw her, she was hospitalized after being pushed down the stairs by Underwood! *

It’s unknown whether she’ll return for the final season this year.

*He’s still an incredible actor!  Creep!

FLINT WATER CRISIS

One of my goals in 2018 is to drink more water.

While there are many parts of the world that lack clean water or have water shortages, it’s a given here in the United States that we should have a safe water supply.

In China, even the people that live there will not drink the water without boiling it, which should be a crime in itself — that a country can’t or doesn’t provide clean water!

However, I’m venting today about the Flint, Michigan water crisis that started in 2014.

I just read a couple of extensive (old) articles in “Time” and “Rolling Stone” and it still infuriates me now as it did almost four years ago.

To think city government officials (not elected officials, but ones appointed by Republican Governor Rick Snyder) approved a plan to change the water supply to save $19 million over eight years.

That might have been a logical choice had they not chosen to get the water from the Flint River, which was basically a dumping ground for the auto industry for decades.

The short story is that a month after the source of the city’s water changed, people started reporting funny smelling water coming out of the faucets brown or yellow.

flint-water

Yet, city officials said it was safe!

Kids started getting sores on their bodies from bathing and people’s hair started falling out.

It wasn’t until early 2016 that Governor Snyder admitted failure and vowed to make things right.

POLL__Governor_Rick_Snyder

Film maker Michael Moore stated “The people of my hometown, Flint, Michigan, are being poisoned.  Let’s not mince words:  This is a racial crime.  If it were happening in another country, we’d call it an ethnic cleansing.”

Senator Bernie Sanders called for Snyder to resign.

And, in Charleston, South Carolina, in January 2016, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “We’ve had a city in the United States of America where the population, which is poor in many ways and majority African American, has been drinking and bathing in lead-contaminated water, I’ll tell you what — if the kids in a rich suburb of Detroit had been drinking contaminated water and being bathed in it, there would’ve been action!”

I think Flint city officials, Governor Snyder, and even those at the Environmental Protection Agency that knew about this and dropped the ball should be jailed for their incompetence!

To this day, we still don’t know how the lead poisoning that the kids got from the contaminated water will affect them in the long run.

The bottom line is that this is a disgrace and, I agree, racism is and was the catalyst!

SO, WHAT NOW?

In March 2016, “Time” reported that the state legislature appropriated $37 million to help treat kids with high lead levels and pay residents’unpaid utility bills.

Governor Snyder proposed $195 million for aid and infrastructure improvements (potentially replacing about 5,000 lead pipes) and Flint Mayor Karen Weaver is proposing $55 million to replace corroded plumbing.

Remember, this was to save $19 million over eight years!!!!!

MICHELE BACHMANN, GOD TALKED TO ME!

Former Minnesota Congresswoman and presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann is considering a run for Al Franken’s U.S. Senate seat.

Bachmann

She says she’s asking God if it should be her!

Well, Michele, I had enough your insanity in 2012 and God came to me in a vision and said, “Tell Michele thanks, but no thanks!”

“THE X-FILES”

In television, we’ve learned to “never say never” or believe the words “series finale”.  Also, being killed off doesn’t mean you’re really dead!

x-files

I’m excited that “The X-Files” is back for ten episodes for its eleventh season, but I’m bummed to hear that Gillian Anderson, who plays FBI agent Dana Scully, says she won’t return for another season.

And, creator Chris Carter and Fox says without her, there will be no more “The X-Files”!

Gillian David The X-Files

Many of you gave up on the series before it ended with its ninth season in 2002.  The six-episode reboot last year started off strong and lost much of its audience.

It’s back for ten episodes on Fox this winter and the first episode was a major shocker to “The X-Files” fans.

The first few minutes were just okay, but once it got going, it was a crazy ride!

Now, about that major shocker.  Let’s just say that fans are irate and Carter is defending his decision.  The shocking scene was a “wow” — that turned to creepy and then disgusting!

This season focuses again on the extinction of the human race, aliens, and Scully’s teenage son, William, who has alien DNA.  He’s also been in hiding from the government (the bad guys) since birth.

I can’t wait to see how this “ends”!

“THE CROWN”

I finally got on board and binge-watched this Netflix original now in its second season.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith star as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

It’s interesting how Elizabeth II became the Queen and watch all the obstacles she faced.  Also, it’s great to see the “young” Queen because I grew up with and only know the “older” Queen.

In the first season, Foy won both the Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award and the series also won the Golden Globe for Best Series – Drama.

John Lithgow was amazing as Prime Minister Winston Churchill.  He also won the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Emmy.

While the cast of seasons one and two were incredible, Foy, Lithgow, and Vanessa Kirby (Princess Margaret) were my favorites.

When the show returns for seasons three and four, there will be an all new cast and we’ll see a time jump from the early-1960s.

By the way, my favorite episode was S2, E9 with President John F. Kennedy & Jackie visiting Buckingham Palace.  It was also also Foy’s favorite episode of the second season.

GRADE: A

“DETROIT”

This was my fourth favorite movie of 2017.  Sadly, it was ignored in theaters, so watch it on DVD.

It’s from Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) and is about the race riots in Detroit in the late-1960s.

The scenes between racist white police officers and the violence they subject to a mostly black group at a hotel is appalling and gripping.

GRADE: A

“GIRLS TRIP”

If you think you need a group of men acting badly (“The Hangover”) to have a great time, get with the times.

A group of long-time friends get together in New Orleans and let it all hang out in this smash comedy ($139 million at the box office) starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and newcomer Tiffany Haddish.

We all need a friend like Haddish’s Dina!

The movie is hilarious and it easily earns its hard “R” rating — for raunchy. 🙂

You’ll also want to Google Kofi Siriboe afterwards!

REMEMBERING DAVID BOWIE

It’s hard to think that it’s been two years now this week since David Bowie left us.

To remember him, here’s my favorite Bowie song.

While “Modern Love” hit #2 in the Canada, Israel, and the U.K., it only hit #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the U.S.

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Random Friday (2018) Thoughts

It’s now 2018 and I’m so glad that dreadful 2017 is behind me!

Happy New Year!🥂🎉

Capture1

I was blessed to travel in 2017 —  Jacksonville (FL) in January, Las Vegas a couple of times (March and December), and Scandinavia (mostly Norway, one night in Sweden, and two nights in gorgeous Copenhagen, Denmark) in August and September.

AP Scand

In Vegas, I saw some amazing shows:

Britney Spears…

Brit

Tanya Tucker…

Capture2

Lionel Richie (and I got to meet him)…

and Mariah Carey.  Spectacular!

MC ALL I WANT VEGAS

The new year is here and personally, I’m ready for a sexy change in my life.

KylieOkay, that’d be fun and sexy, but I’ll tone it down just a bit. 🙂

I’m ready for some fun travel, see some more great shows, and be entertained in 2018!

There are still a few acts I want to catch in Las Vegas.  I’d love to see Rod Stewart…

Ricky Martin…

And, Jennifer Lopez.

Capture1

By the way, let me be your Jennifer Lopez jukebox. Here are my 20 favorite J. Lo songs.

https://anthonypeoples.wordpress.com/2016/07/27/my-20-favorite-j-lo-songs/

And, since I mentioned Ricky Martin, I’m eager for the new Ryan Murphy series, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace:  American Crime Story”.

It premieres January 17, 2018 on FX.

Outside of Vegas, the one concert I’d love to see in 2018 is Kylie Minogue.

Kylie Minogue

She has a new album coming out and a rumored tour to support it this fall.

And, here’s a bonus — just because it’s so sensual and SEXY scandalous!

Speaking of new albums, Years & Years, I’m ready for a new album!

Communion

2015’s “Communion” album was spectacular!  I’m sharing “Real” because it features my fantasy future husband, Ben Whishaw! (But, he already has a husband!)

Ben Whishaw

As of right now, there are six movies I can’t wait to see in the new year.

How many times have I expressed how excited I am to see “Call Me By Your Name” (it’s coming to Destin, Florida, January 19th!)?

Also, I want to see Nick Robinson in “Love Simon” on March 16th.

Also, there’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” on July 20th!

On October 19, 2018, the new “Halloween” comes out and it’ll be a direct sequel to the 1978 original with Jamie Lee Curtis returning.

jamie-lee-curtis-halloween

And, then on Christmas Day 2018, there are two that I want to see.

There’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” about Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury on Christmas Day 2018 starring the incredible Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot”.

Queen Rami

And, Emily Blunt and Ben Whishaw (him again!) in “Mary Poppins Returns”.

Those are just some of the things that excite for 2018!

Again, Happy New Year 🥂🎉 !!!!

2018: Looking Ahead, Not Back

Happy New Year!!!

Capture1

I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.

The highlight of my Christmas season was the 90-minutes-plus I spent in Mariah Carey’s Christmas wonderland for her “All I Want For Christmas” show in Las Vegas a few weeks ago.

MC ALL I WANT VEGAS

While I always enjoy the beautiful decorations and the sounds of holidays, I was very Luther Krank this year and was all for “Skipping Christmas”!

As Leann Rimes sings in “The Story” from “Remnants”, my #1 album of 2017:

“All of these lines across my face/Tell you the story of who I am/So many stories of where I’ve been/And how I got to where I am”

“You see the smile that’s on my mouth/It’s hiding the words that don’t come out/ And all of my friends who think that I’m blessed/They don’t know my life is a mess”

Enough of that, it’s now 2018 and I’m so ready to turn the page in my life and forget most of 2017.  From this point on, this blog contains adult content, adult language, nudity, and strong sexual content!

TV contains

Okay, there’s really isn’t any nudity!  So, I’ll share this so the blog isn’t “fake news”!

Josh Wald

In case you’re wondering, that’s model and skateboarder Josh Wald!

Focus, Anthony!

ss

I can’t believe how much my life has changed now that I’m a “professional”.

In the early-1990s after my mother died, I was miserable waiting tables in Kentucky just hoping my career would take off one day.  On top of that, I was a practicing bulimic weighing 116 pounds when I finally got on the wagon in 1995 and got healthy!

Yet, even back then, I was spontaneous.  I’d go on weekend getaways with friends to Louisville, Kentucky or fly away to Houston, Cancun, or Las Vegas.

For Memorial Day 1994, my two best friends and I took a weekend trip to Chicago.  While there, I decided I was moving from small town America Kentucky to the third largest city in the U.S.

AP 06 1994

A little more than a month later, I was living in Chicago! I miss that spontaneity!

And, those words and sentiments are clearly expressed in my favorite song of 2017:

“I’m in need of a savior, but I’m not asking for favors/My whole life, I’ve felt like a burden/I THINK TOO MUCH, I HATE IT/I’m so used to being in the wrong, I’m tired of caring/Loving never gave me a home, so I’ll sit here in the silence”

You can hear that haunting and incredible song here.  It’ll open in a new window.

https://anthonypeoples.wordpress.com/2017/12/28/2017-my-favorite-songs/

When I was in Vegas in December, between shows (Tanya Tucker, Lionel Richie, and Mariah) and indulging in great food, I had plenty of time to pontificate — where I’m at in my life and what my next step should be.  What I call “living” now is not working for me!

This was cemented on the two legs of my return trip home.  From Las Vegas to Houston, I was very relaxed.  However, doom and gloom set in as soon as I boarded the short flight from Houston to Panama City!

As I hinted in my Christmas letter, it’s time to “shake it off” and “get the hell out of Dodge”!!!

I have four cities in mind for a fresh start.

Two of them, I’d move to with or without a television job, and the other two would only be for another television job.

We’ll see… Cheers!

Claire

Figuring out where to go next and what to do isn’t the only change in my life.

I’m convinced that unless Prince Charming falls from the sky, I’m going to be single the rest of my life!

taylor-swift-selena-gomez-shut-the-fuck-up-vmas-2013

The dating world has changed so much since I was last single in early 2009!

While no longer being in my 20s, 30s, or 40s is an obstacle, I’m convinced now that many gay people are not interested in monogamy or relationships.

I’m appalled at how many people on apps are “partnered”, in an “open relationship”, or “married”.  Yet, they’re on these apps with or without the knowledge of their other half!

I’m definitely not a prude!  I’m all for singles (or couples that experiment together) having fun and hooking up!

But, it’s gotten so crazy with online dating sites or hook-up apps with the demands that people expect — it’s like ordering a pizza online!

Pizza 1

That’s why I think I’ll remain single!

Ben Whishaw

Another reason, Ben Whishaw already has a husband and he’s probably never heard of Panama City, Florida!

Also, in the new year, I’m going to be less obsessed with weight.

Usually, I get in between 25,000-40,000 steps a day.  However, my new objective is to only walk around 20,000-25,000 steps each day.

Also, I plan on napping an hour each afternoon, drinking more water and only a couple glasses of wine!

If I gain five pounds, who cares!

Diet Plan

That’s where I’m at now that 2017 is over.

In 2018, here’s to the best year ever for all of us.

2017: My Favorite Movies

When I share my favorite movies of the year, the list may include an older movie or two.  My rankings are for movies that I saw for the first time in the calendar year regardless of the release date.

With that being said, my most anticipated movie that’s getting a lot of love on the awards circuit and I hope Oscar love when the announcements come out in January 23, 2018, is “Call Me By Your Name”.

Since it was only in limited release in late 2017, it won’t make my list until I count down my favorites of 2018.

2017: My Favorite Songs

What’s your favorite song of 2017?  Was it pop, country, dance, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, or a new Christmas song?

I’m ready to share my 20 favorites of the year.  Some I know might be on your list and there are some many of you may not have even heard.

Best Songs

So, before I start, a quick look back over the years.  In 2013, my favorite song (and video) was Hailey Rowe’s “My Boyfriend Is Gay”.

In 2014, it was “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift and Jason Derulo’s “Want To Want Me” was tops for me in 2015.

My favorite song last year was “Faded” by Alan Walker (featuring Iselin Solheim).

Here’s an interesting fact for you — the video has been viewed an incredible 1.44 billion (that’s BILLION, with a “B”) times!

2017: My Favorite Albums

The music business is changing.

People still buy albums, but not as many as in the past.  It’s easier to download songs you like and not buy the complete package.

I guess I fall into the first category since I only bought seven new releases in 2017!

Before I get to my countdown, here’s a recap of my favorite albums of this decade:

“Night Works” – Scissor Sisters (2010); “Femme Fatale” – Britney Spears (2011); “MDNA” – Madonna (2012); “Push Rewind” – Chris Wallace (2013); (tie) “The Violet Flame (Erasure) and “Sex + Love” (Enrique Iglesias) (2014); “Deja Vu” – Giorgio Moroder (2015); and my favorite album last year was:

Snow Possible Tonight & Early Sunday

UPDATE:  Sunday, December 24, 2017, 6:40 p.m.

Snow:  2.7″ Cambridge (IL); 2.3″ Kewanee (IL); 2.0″ Moline (IL); 1.8″ Davenport (IA); 1.1″ Iowa City (IA); 1.1″ Dewitt (IA); 0.8″ Dubuque (IA).

Anthony

UPDATE:  Saturday, December 23, 2017, 3:05 p.m.

Based on new data coming in, more of the Mississippi and Illinois Valleys may be seeing a “White Christmas”!

The Quad Cities is now included in the earlier “Winter Weather Advisory”!

Capture1

For simplicity sake, the “Advisory” runs from late tonight (midnight or 3 a.m.) through midday or early afternoon Sunday (noon or 3 p.m.).

The latest computer models are coming in with more moisture to work with, so that means more of the area will see snow.

Capture1

Amounts really haven’t changed all that much.

I still think the southern hometowns will see 1-3″ of snow with a few 4″ reports.

Around the Quad Cities and along and just north of Interstate 80, an inch or two are still possible with some 3″ totals.

North of that, around Dubuque, Iowa, Galena and Freeport, Illinois, an inch of snow may cover the ground.

Bitterly cold air will follow the snow.  Highs only in the teens and 20s and lows in the single digits are on the way for next week.

Some hometowns may even drop below zero Monday and Tuesday nights.

ORIGINAL POST:  Saturday, December 23, 2017, 6:50 a.m.

Some across the Midwest are lucking out and may see a “White Christmas”.

If you live south of the Quad Cities, you have a better chance.  Northern hometowns will only see a dusting of snow.

A disturbance moving out of the Plains late Saturday through midday Sunday will bring an accumulating band of snow to parts of Iowa and Illinois.

Snow

Interstate 80 is a good cutting off point.

Along and south of I-80, a “Winter Weather Advisory” goes into effect overnight Saturday for those counties.

1-3″ of snow could accumulate under that “Winter Weather Advisory”!  There could be an isolated 4″ report.

A “Winter Weather Advisory” goes into effect at midnight Saturday through noon Sunday for Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Lee, Louisa, and Washington counties in Iowa.

That “Winter Weather Advisory” runs from 3 a.m through 3 p.m. Sunday for Bureau, Henderson, Henry, Mercer, and Warren counties in Illinois.

If you live in the Quad Cities, you’re not under the “Advisory” as of Saturday morning.  Accumulations of an inch or two are still possible.

That’ll be enough for a “White Christmas”, but not for an advisory.

Hometowns around Dubuque, Iowa, Galena and Freeport, Illinois, may only see a dusting of snow.

Much Colder

While some may get more snow than others, all will have to deal with bitterly cold air.

Highs only in the teens and 20s and lows in the single digits are on the way for next week.

Some hometowns may even drop below zero Monday and Tuesday nights.

Random (Christmas) Thoughts — December 22, 2017

Christmas is here in a few day!

Thank you for checking out my festive, holiday version of “Random Friday (Christmas) Thoughts” today.

“CHRISTMAS GHOSTS — LIVE FROM NEW YORK, IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT”

MARIAH CHRISTMAS TO YOU!

I just saw the “All I Want For Christmas Is You” Mariah Carey show in Las Vegas.  She was absolutely gorgeous and flawless and her voice was crisp and angelic.

MC ALL I WANT VEGAS

The sets were magical and stunning and for just over 90 minutes, all my unhappiness was a distant memory!

Here’s my Facebook album of the amazing show.

https://www.facebook.com/anthony.gene.13/media_set?set=a.10155163332614849.1073742044.500579848&type=3

By the way, the title track to the new holiday movie, “The Star”, by Mariah has already been nominated for a Golden Globe award and is in contention for an Oscar nomination!

POINSETTIAS

The poinsettia, traditionally an American Christmas flower, originally grew in Mexico; where it was known as the “Flower of the Holy Night”.

Poinsettia 1

It was first brought to America by Joel Poinsett in 1829.

CANDY CANES

During the Christmas/Hanukkah season, more than 1.76 billion candy canes will be made.

christmascocktails

I wonder how many of those billions end up as garnishes in festive holiday drinks?

CHRISTMAS TREES

The National Christmas Tree Association reports that Americans buy 37.1 million real Christmas trees each year.  And, of that number, one out of every four are from the country’s roughly 5,000 choose-and-cut farms.

ABBA's First Christmas 2000

I did that back in 2000 and 2001 for Miss ABBA’s (my late golden retriever) first two Christmases.

In retrospective, I felt guilty for cutting down that big, gorgeous tree!

TURKEYS

The Christmas turkey first appeared on English tables in the 16th century.

Our Turkey 2012

However, in rich households, it didn’t immediately replace the traditional goose, beef or boar’s head.

CHRISTMAS STAMPS

I chose these stamps this year to help out a very financially stressed United States Postal Service.  I sent out 136 cards and that’s really the only time I use the USPS except when I order things online.

Stamps 1

It’s ironic that the USPS is about to go under because as early as 1822, the postmaster in Washington, D.C. wanted to limit the number of cards people could send at the holidays.

People were sending out so many homemade cards, since commercial cards weren’t available then, that an extra sixteen postmen had to be hired in the nation’s capital to handle the extra mail.

The Postmaster General would be ecstatic if that was the case today!

I guess this is my chance to say once again, stop Saturday mail service and save yourself a lot of money!

“SILENT NIGHT”

“Silent Night” was written in 1818, by Austrian priest Joseph Mohr.

On Christmas Eve, he was told that the church organ was broken and it would not be repaired for service that evening.

Saddened, he wanted to write a carol that could be sung by choir to guitar music and he sat down and wrote three stanzas.  Later that night,  “Stille Nacht” was performed for the first time in that little Austrian church.

BABY JESUS & THE MANGER

Jesus Christ, the son of Mary, was born in a cave, not in a wooden stable.

Back then, animals were kept in caves because they were much warmer and the carpenters of Jesus’ day were really stone cutters.

Thus, wood was not widely used.  So, whenever you see a Christmas nativity scene with a wooden stable, that’s the “American” version, not the Biblical one.

And, this is Miss ABBA wanting to be a part of the “Americanized” Christmas nativity scene.

“JINGLE BELLS”

And, finally, the Christmas classic, “Jingle Bells”, was composed in 1857 by James Pierpont.  It was originally called “One-Horse Open Sleigh.”

Check out this version of the popular holiday carol at Germany’s largest supermarket chain, Edeka.

It made me smile.

GLOWING TURTLE

Here’s a holiday bonus, “glowing turtles” were found a couple of years ago off the coast of the Solomon Islands (northeast of Australia).

The biofluorescent species glow red and green!

“TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS”

And, while it isn’t one of my favorite holiday songs, crazy town’s Janice Dickinson’s version of the “Twelve Days of Christmas” is over-the-top fun.

However, the song was written to help Catholic children, in England, remember different articles of faith during the persecution by Protestant Monarchs.

Now, I found this online and didn’t take the time to verify it, but it’s still interesting.

In the song:

The “partridge in a pear tree” = Christ.
2 Turtle Doves = the Old and New Testaments
3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity– the Theological Virtues
4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists
5 Golden Rings = the first Five Books of the Old Testament, the “Pentateuch”, which relays the history of man’s fall from grace.
6 Geese A-laying = the six days of Creation
7 Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments
8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes
9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit
10 Lords A-leaping = the ten commandments
11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles
12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle’s Creed

HOLIDAY BREAK

While I have a few year end “best of” or “favorites” blogs coming, I’m taking time off from “Random Friday Thoughts”.

If there’s something that I really want to talk about, I’ll write something just about that. 🙂

THAT’S IT

With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!

Quad Cities White Christmas?

UPDATED POST:  Wednesday, December 20, 2017, 5:18 p.m.

While a wintry mix is possible Thursday night, the Friday night/Saturday system will likely stay well south of the Quad Cities.

However, if the long-term models hold, a snowy end of December is not out of the question — but, that’s still a ways off in terms of model consistency.

Greetings Quad Cities across the miles!  Are you “dreaming of a white Christmas”?

March Snow

While it’s still days away, there was a point yesterday when that wish looked possible.  However, those chances are diminishing.

The system that threatened to whiten the ground for you will be passing southeast of you Friday night into Saturday morning.

QC Snow Chances

In the earlier GFS model run Tuesday, the system would have missed the Quad Cities.  However, the next run six hours later made a big shift northwest.  It was enough of a jump to do two things: (1) excite meteorologist for an accumulating snow threat for the Quad Cities and (2) be very suspicious and wait for later runs.

Sure enough, the 18Z GFS run Tuesday evening decreased the heavier snow chances for the Quad Cities.  And, those chances look even less likely this morning!

However, it’s going to be turning very cold and there could be some light snow.  But, it probably won’t be enough for a “White Christmas”!

So, why am I writing about snow a thousand miles away from Panama City, Florida?

Lighted Palm Trees

The same reason that The Carpenters sang about a “White Christmas” from warm Beverly Hills L.A.:

“The sun is shining; the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway
There’s never been such a day in Beverly Hills L. A.
But it’s December the 24th and I’m longing to be up north

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the tree tops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow.”

‘Tis the Season, My Friends!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year.  This year, I put my tree and decorations up earlier than usual.  I really needed the beauty of the sparkling lights and the sounds of Christmas music to get me through my toughest year since my mother died 27 years ago!

After eight years together, Ray and I decided to go our separate ways earlier in the year.

It wasn’t just one thing that brought us to this conclusion.  The outcome of the 2016 election was very difficult for me and it took its toll on us. (I’m still not at peace with it!)  Also, it turns out I was a better dad to a golden retriever than his teenage daughter.  And, Ray realized he wasn’t happy some time ago, but he didn’t address it.

So, I took a morning meteorologist position in Panama City, Florida.  I still love what I do, but with the changes in my personal life and the move, it hasn’t been easy.  I’m miserable and it’s not just because of the split. I miss my sister, my friends, my koi/fish pond, and the snow in the Midwest!

With that being said, life is too short to feel this way and if things don’t change soon, I’ll make a change for myself and not just accept a “Band-Aid” to cover something that needs more attention – my happiness.

Enough with the “Hard Candy Christmas”, let’s make it a “Holly Jolly Christmas”!  There were fun things in 2017!

Meeting my childhood idol was the highlight of my move.

In July, I drove hours through the Southern “backwoods” to Plains, Georgia, and enjoyed a church sermon from President Jimmy Carter.

Not only did I get my picture taken with him and his wonderful wife, Rosalynn, but they sent me an autographed picture of us!

Since paying bills isn’t the only reason I work, I traveled, too!

You know how much I love Las Vegas.  In March, I saw Britney Spears for the second time.

And, I caught the Australian Bee Gees, a cover band.

Of course, splurging on buffets is a huge draw for me. I’ve now made the scrumptious Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan and the incredibly delicious Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood part of my Vegas tradition!

In August, Ray and I traveled to Scandinavia together since we had already booked and paid for the trip.  Copenhagen, Denmark was gorgeous and Norway was beautiful, too (I loved Bergen and Oslo and seeing snow on Sognefjord (“King of the Fjords”).  We also spent one night in Gothenburg, Sweden.

My sister, Tammy, is still in the Quad Cities. She and her boyfriend, Gerald, came down for a week to visit in October.

Just after she got home, her family expanded in October with the birth of twin grandsons.  Now, her two granddaughters are big sisters.

I hope life is treating you well and that you have so much to be thankful for — not just at the holidays, but every day.  With all the craziness in the world, make it the best in your little part of it!  Here’s wishing us great health and happiness in 2018 as we travel down this road of life!

“May hope and faith conquer fear and hate this Christmas!”

Love, Anthony
